Building a Robust Pipeline of Indian Projects to Fund: AIIB

Time of India6 days ago
New Delhi: The
Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank
(AIIB) is looking to expand its India footprint and widen its pipeline of both sovereign and private sector projects to fund, said Ajay Bhushan Pandey, vice president (investment solutions) at the Beijing-based multilateral lender.
It's focussing on sectors, including clean energy, green mobility, affordable housing, data centre and other digital infrastructure, he said.
India is the largest recipient of AIIB funds and accounts for a fifth of the lender's $60 billion financing since inception nine years ago, Pandey said. Of the $12 billion that Indian projects have received so far, the private sector's share stands at $1.8 billion, he added.
The lender, Pandey said, aims to expand its overall annual financing target to about $17 billion in 3-4 years from $10 billion now. This will leave greater funding space for India and other countries.
The AIIB has 110 members. India is the second-biggest shareholder with a 7.57% voting share in the multilateral bank, trailing China that has 26.52%.
AIIB is willing to play its role not just as a financier but also as a catalyst for governments and private players to raise funds using the backing of the multilateral bank that has an AAA rating.
Plus, its participation in a project, including the private ones, can potentially encourage other lenders and investors to join in, significantly bolstering the availability of finances for the project.
India focus
Pandey and his team are meeting various government functionaries and private players during their India visit.
The AIIB, Pandey said, will work with various ministries to create a very sound pipeline of sovereign projects. "Similarly, we will work with private sector players to create the pipeline of the projects where we can finance through all the options that are available," he added.
Pandey is scheduled to meet senior officials from the ministry of health later on Tuesday and those from the power ministry on Wednesday. He huddled with the water resources secretary on Monday and a number of issues, including the revival of dams, interlinking of rivers and the Namami Gange programme (meant for curbing pollution and rejuvenating the Ganga), were discussed.
He will meet Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and senior state officials to discuss infrastructure projects in both public and private sectors.

Tripadvisor Holder Palliser Urges Strategy Review, Possible Sale

(Bloomberg) -- Palliser Capital is urging Tripadvisor Inc. to explore a potential sale, heaping pressure on the travel booking and review site that's already facing another high-profile shareholder activist. London-based Palliser is concerned that the legacy business is weighing on performance and eroding shareholder value, according to a letter sent to the company's board in July that has been reviewed by Bloomberg News. The firm wants Tripadvisor to form a strategic committee to explore a range of issues, including how to unleash value from high-growth brands like Viator and TheFork. It's also calling for a review of the group's employee incentive program and capital allocation strategy. 'The company is caught between two fundamentally different strategic identities,' Palliser Chief Investment Officer James Smith wrote in the letter. 'This internal conflict is holding back its most promising venture – Viator, stifling growth and innovation, weakening its competitive edge and costing it the investor attention and valuation it should command.' Shares in Tripadvisor are up around 4% over the last 12 months, compared with a gain of 30% in the Nasdaq Composite Index. The Needham, Massachusetts-based company has a market value of about $2.1 billion. Palliser, which holds roughly 1.1% of Tripadvisor's Class A shares, is seeking a meeting with the board to discuss its unease. 'We value constructive engagement with all of our shareholders and appreciate their feedback,' a spokesperson for Tripadvisor said. 'The Tripadvisor board of directors and management team are committed to driving long-term value for our shareholders.' Tripadvisor's core business remains under pressure from factors including increased competition and weaker travel demand. That has already attracted the attention of another activist firm, Starboard Value LP, which has built a 9% stake and also wants to work with management to unlock value. For Palliser, a lot of any potential upside would come from a focus on Viator, a marketplace for connecting travelers with providers of tours, activities and experiences around the globe. The investor believes Viator could be valued at $2 billion to $2.5 billion on a standalone basis. 'It represents a high-potential business that is well placed to capitalize on the underpenetrated travel experience booking opportunity,' Smith wrote of Viator. The strength of that business, as well as the healthy performance of restaurant reservation service TheFork, mean Tripadvisor's market capitalization should be closer to $3.7 billion, according to Smith. 'It is attempting to operate simultaneously as a value business and a growth business — and succeeding at neither,' he wrote. In February 2024, Tripadvisor announced it was forming a special committee to evaluate any potential takeover proposals after its board authorized talks on a possible acquisition. The following month, Bloomberg News reported that Apollo Global Management Inc. had expressed interest in exploring a bid for the company. Palliser, led by Elliott Investment Management alumnus Smith, last year appointed another former Elliott investor, Steve Kasoff, as chairman for the US market. CarzSpa Scales 125+ studios, sets global benchmark for Indian car detailing

CarzSpa has made a significant contribution to the growth of India's car detailing industry, which is undergoing rapid transformation. What came as a solution to a Surat crisis in 2007 has since grown into a chain of over 125 detailing studios in India and Nepal, with an expanding international footprint and more than 700 specialists trained under its umbrella. It was the 2006 Surat floods that brought into being the idea of CarzSpa. Thousands of cars were underwater after the flood, and though mechanical work and bodywork were easy to come by, professional solutions for rejuvenating and cleaning car interiors did not exist. This vacuum in the Indian auto care market saw the setting up of the country's first auto detailing studio a year later. Most of the Indian clientele at CarzSpa, when it first opened, were unaware of detailing as a concept. The company introduced something different from traditional car washes or polishing services, with an organised, quality-based approach modelled on best global practice. CarzSpa soon became a high-street brand that raised the bar in car care, focusing on technical excellence, the latest materials, and meticulous attention to detail. As demand grew, CarzSpa launched a franchise format , allowing it to expand fast and maintain the quality of service. Through the years, the brand has expanded to more than 125 franchised locations, not just bringing automobile detailing to additional cities but also helping local entrepreneurs with establishing long-term service ventures under the CarzSpa name. The company's efforts at professionalising the business extended beyond the mere offering of services. CarzSpa established AutoFresh in 2010, one of India's earliest B2B e-commerce platforms for automobile care products used in car washing. This strategy gave detailers across India improved access to international automobile care brands, accelerating procurement and enhancing service quality at the ground level. CarzSpa further established the AutoFresh Detailing Academy , India's first detailing training centre, to assist in developing industry talent. More than 700 professionals have been trained through the academy's structured programs, hands-on seminars, and monthly mentoring. More than 100 detailers and entrepreneurs have also gained from the program's ongoing learning and support group in growing their business. CarzSpa has achieved global recognition in addition to its operations in India. As President of the International Detailing Association's India Chapter, the firm actively represents Indian specialists on the global stage. CarzSpa's footprint may be seen at trade shows, in foreign magazines, and through cross-border mentorships, with its influence reaching over 600 detailing studios globally. Innovation stays at the heart of CarzSpa's quest. From introducing technology such as steam cleaning and graphene coatings to testing scalable service models, the company is constantly refining how car detailing is performed and perceived in India. Its focus has always been on strengthening industry standards and generating sustainable employment opportunities within the field. CarzSpa's story is one of more than mere company expansion. It illustrates the evolution of a once-unorganised industry into an established professional services field. The firm's efforts in training, franchising, and international partnerships have not only established car detailing as a force to be reckoned with in India but have also positioned the nation on the global automotive care map.
