The Holocaust Centre of New Zealand and the New Zealand Jewish Council condemn the vile antisemitic graffiti that appeared overnight in our capital city, Wellington.
Holocaust Centre of New Zealand, chair, Deborah Hart said, 'This graffiti is, alas, quite accurate. It would appear, once again, to be cool to hate Jews. We actually see that in a stark increase in Jew hatred, the lacklustre response of schools when Jewish children are subjected to abuse, the deplatforming of Jewish artists, hate mail, property damage and the lack of concern for Jewish people generally. The small Jewish community in New Zealand is vulnerable and has suffered ongoing hate, which shows no signs of abating.'
New Zealand Jewish Council spokesperson, Ben Kepes, says, 'Under the guise of protest against Israel's war in Gaza, classic antisemitic tropes, insults and abuse are rife. The Jewish community has been targeted, intimidated and discriminated against through physical attacks, threats of violence, boycotts of Jewish businesses and careers and harassment of students. Such actions would never be justified or tolerated against any other minority under the guise of opposition to overseas events.'
'The graffiti we saw daubed across a public space in Wellington this morning could have been once daubed across German streets in the 1930s. Then, like now, some leaders are emboldening citizens to find a scapegoat on whom to place blame for all manner of ills. For example, when New Zealand political leaders support calls to "Globalise the Intifada", they are repeating a call for an armed, violent uprising not only against Jews, but against Western society more generally. We call on all leaders to think before they parrot slogans from overseas that could target our vulnerable Jewish community here'
Ms Hart commented, 'It's chilling to recall the horrific events over 80 years ago, half a world away. The Holocaust started with hate. It ended in the Holocaust. It's time for all to condemn antisemitism, in all its forms and to take care in their messaging.'
Mr Kepes said, 'No matter what is going on internationally or politically, New Zealand Jews should be safe and secure in New Zealand. They should not wake to hateful messages in our streets'.

Good morning and welcome to your Monday recap of the international business and political stories making headlines. First, The European Union has delayed retaliatory tariffs on US exports until August. Last week, US President Donald Trump wrote a letter announcing his plans to impose 30% tariffs on EU imports from August 1. He warned that if the trade partner retaliated, he would hit back by raising tariffs above 30%, the BBC reported. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the EU would extend the suspension of its countermeasures. "At the same time, we will continue to prepare for the countermeasures so we're fully prepared." German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said the 30% tariffs would hit exporters in Europe's largest economy 'to the core' if a trade solution can't be reached, Bloomberg reported. He was coordinating closely with other EU leaders to ensure tariffs of that level don't go ahead. 'That requires two things: unity in the European Union and good lines of communication with the American president.' Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. Meanwhile, Trump announced a 35% blanket tariff on imports from Canada, up from 25% announced in February, the ABC reported. Trump justified the tariffs as necessary to manage the opioid crisis, which he said was partly because of fentanyl being smuggled into the US from Canada. In Ukraine, the Security Service said it had killed Russian special service agents suspected of killing a fellow officer in Kyiv last week, claiming Russia's Federal Security Service was responsible, CNN reported. SBU officer Ivan Voronych was shot dead in an apparent assassination. The suspects attempted to keep a low profile after the shooting, however, officers established their whereabouts. 'As a result of covert investigative and active counterintelligence measures, the enemy's lair was discovered. During their arrest, they began to resist, there was an exchange of fire, and the scoundrels were eliminated,' officials said. In the UK, GDP declined again in May and put pressure on Chancellor Rachel Reeves before a tough budget in the autumn, the Guardian said. Stronger-than-expected growth would have helped to alleviate the squeeze on public finances. The 0.1% decline in May followed a 0.3% contraction in April. Economists expect the Bank of England to cut rates in August. 'May's downbeat outturn means a contraction in GDP across the second quarter looks a racing certainty,' said Suren Thiru of the Institute of Chartered Accountants. UK Chancellor Rachel Reeves. In the Middle East, Syria finalised an US$800 million agreement with Dubai-based DP World to redevelop its Tartous Port to help increase post-war reconstruction, Al Jazeera reported. Syrian officials described the deal as a key step towards modernising the country's logistics infrastructure. Since the fall of former President Bashar al-Assad in December, Syria's new leadership had been pushing to re-establish economic ties with international companies. DP World chief executive Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem said Syria's economic potential remained strong. 'Syria possesses valuable assets … and Tartous is an essential hub for trade and exports. We aim to transform it into one of the world's leading ports.' In Italy, the Agnelli family's John Elkann and his siblings agreed to pay about €175m to settle a probe over alleged tax evasion, Bloomberg reported. A spokesperson for the siblings confirmed an agreement with Italy's Revenue Agency. The deal was reached 'with the aim of swiftly and definitively resolving a painful matter on a personal and family level'. The tax investigation focused on allegations the siblings didn't pay Italian taxes on assets they inherited after the death of their grandmother. Elkann is chair of global carmaker Stellantis, the manufacturer of several brands including Fiat and Peugeot.

Friday, 18 July 2025 On Saturday I came into possession of this letter, transcript below. I will note that the recipient of the letter is someone I know a bit about; I would like to know more about his time in London, circa 1930-1932. I understand that he attended the London School of Economics. I never met him; but, me being a student of the Great Depression, I wish I had known him while writing my MA thesis. Eric Salmon lived from 1903 to 1990. Certainly a patrician, he was an Auckland City Councillor and associate of Auckland's 'Mayor Robbie'. He would never have had any sympathy with the Nazi cause. Nevertheless, I would like to think that, like me, he would have had some empathy for the German people in 1933; and the many other people then caught up in events – indeed zeitgeists – moving too fast, and on too great a scale. Sadly, I will never be able to see Mr Salmon's letter to his German contact (probably written late in 1932). I do not know if he replied to the letter below: ________________________________________________________________________________ Home Address: Schwelm (in Westfalen) Kirkplatz 7 Schwelm, 6th VI. [June] 1933 Dear Mr. Salmon, Your letter with the interesting account of your native [town?] and the economic position of New Zealand was a great joy to me, and I thank you very much for it. I hope, you won't take it amiss that my answer comes so late. During the last months I spent all my time in finishing the dissertation for my doctor examination. Some days ago I finally handed it to my professor, and I am now preparing for the oral examination which will take place in the end of July. – How are you getting on with your work? In the course of rather a short time the political situation in this country has thoroughly changed, and the questions you put to me in your letter have found a sudden solution. I may add : also a good one. You are perhaps astonished to read that, for – as far as I know – most of the great newspapers of the world tell you just the contrary. The reason for it is that the European nations, above all France and Polonia [Poland], but England too, fear a new war, and this fear is in an inexcusable way nourished by all those German people who don't agree with the new spirit and the new methods. The Jewish question is also of great importance. The measures we took against the Jews were not at all cruel or unjustified, as you read in English papers. All we try is only to reduce the enormous influence and power of the Jews in Germany to an extent which compounds to their small number. More and more their influence has become a destructive force in our national life. What you see nowadays in Germany is not a warlike or an extremely militaristic spirit or a mass barbarism (as many foreigners suppose), but the will to build a new nation, in which no longer the unchecked liberalism of the postwar years reigns. We were standing just before a complete breakdown and the chaos of Communism, which would have been fatal for the whole world. In this dangerous moment came the revolution of our nationalist party under the great leader Hitler. It marks the beginning of something quite new in Germany. We know that a great many tasks are waiting for us, but seeing them we are no longer desperate as it was the case in the last years. The new Germany has a new hope, a new will, and a new energy, and with them we shall overcome all problems and difficulties. What do you think about the change in Germany, and what do you read in the papers? I should be very glad to hear something about it from you. Hoping you are quite well I am with kindest regards, yours Theodor Hort. ________________________________________________________________________________ My Comments: Herr Hort – presumably Dr Hort, soon after – is writing from Schwelm, eleven kilometres east of the Westphalian city of Wuppertal. To the west of Wuppertal is Düsseldorf, on the Rhine; Cologne is to the south, near where the river Wupper flows into the Rhine. To the north of Wuppertal is the Ruhr Valley, Germany's western industrial heartland. Between Düsseldorf and Wuppertal is Neandertal/Neanderthal. Most of the journey between Wuppertal and Schwelm can be taken on the 'world-famous in Westphalia' Wuppertal Schwebebahn, the suspension railway, built between 1897 and 1903, which runs above the Wupper River. I am privileged to have ridden on that railway in 1984. I had hoped that, because the railway is still there, that Wuppertal had not been bombed by the RAF during WW2. No such luck. I found this article in the Burnie Advocate (Tasmania), 1 June 1943: Wuppertal raid one of heaviest of war. This was eight weeks before Operation Gomorrah decimated Hamburg. I have no idea what Theodor Hort's fate was. Maybe he was recruited for the notorious Einsatzgruppen, which was top-heavy with academic doctors? More likely he turned away, at least in his mind, from the excesses of the New Germany; nevertheless serving his country in some capacity, albeit out of the kind of obligation that would have been hard to refuse. There is a high chance he died during the war. I'm guessing he would have been about 35 years old in 1943. Throughout the twentieth century, many young Australians and New Zealanders studied at the London School of Economics. (William Pember Reeves was its Director from 1908 to 1919.) So did many upper-middle-class Germans; Herr Hort clearly fell into that class-category. Other Germans to study economics at the LSE included Heinrich Brüning and Ursula von der Leyen. Brüning was Chancellor of Germany from mid-1930 to mid-1932. Brüning was the centrist politician most associated with the economic collapse of Weimar Germany during the Great Depression, thanks to his 'liberal' policies of stubborn fiscal conservatism. He sought to balance the Budget at any cost. Germany and the world paid a very high cost indeed. I understand that the "unchecked liberalism" Hort refers to is the economic liberalism of Brüning and others (think today's neoliberalism), and not so much the social liberalism of Berlin that was an icon of 1920s' Germany. (As a part of that social liberalism, Germany in 1918 – Germany's first annus horribilis last century – became a proper democracy, with proportional representation, and votes for women.) I would imagine that Hort's parents would have voted for Bruning's Zentrum (Centre) party. While it started as a Catholic party, it was actually the foundation party of German 'Christian Democracy', having already broadened its base by 1930. Westphalia, Düsseldorf and Cologne represented the West German heartland of centrist Christian Democratic politics. And consistently these places cast the fewest votes for Adolf Hitler's party. (The city of Cologne, the least-Nazi-supporting city in Germany, was the first large German urban centre to be carpet-bombed by the British, in 1942.) Nevertheless, at least in March 1933, young Theodor probably voted for the National Socialists. (Although his "great leader" epithet was probably a direct translation of 'führer' rather than an expression of devotion.) The Enabling Act of 1933, which ended democracy in Germany, had been in force for three months before Herr Hort wrote this letter. He, like many others in a desperate country, was willing to forego democracy if other goals might better be achieved without it. Further, by 1938, Hitlernomics – borrowing 'as much as it takes' to re-arm and reorganise along Spartan lines – was looking like a great success. (Something suspiciously similar took place in the Bundestag in 2025, exactly 92 years after the Enabling Act, using the outvoted 'lame-duck' parliament to get the necessary two-thirds majority. This time it was the 'fascists' – AFD – who were against borrowing to re-arm; and the outvoted fastidiously-anti-borrowing neoliberal FDP, who should not have been there.) Finally, here, we should note that Germany as a whole – and certainly western Germany – while Judeophobic, was probably not much more Judeophobic than other European countries (including the USA); and that most German Jews, to 1918 at least, had seen themselves as more Germans than Semites, and played a significant role in the German armed forces in World War One. The circumstances of 1918, however, made it a relatively easy task for would-be-politicians with nationalist agendas to scapegoat Jews. There were vastly more Jews living in the countries east of Germany, and they from 1940 to 1944 ended up being very much in the wrong place at the wrong time. In Germany in 1933, 'Jewish' identity was used very much as proxies for the twin-devils who many Germans believed had 'stabbed Germany in the back' in 1918 (at a time when Germany appeared to be winning on the western front) and again in (and around) 1931; 'Bolshevik' Communists and big-finance capitalists. The 1918 claim of a 'stolen war' was an evidentially-false conspiracy theory which had the appearance of credibility to many desperate people looking for simple answers, and scapegoats. On the Bolshevik matter, while Theodor Hort and others will not have known about it until much later – the winter of 1932/33 was the peak of the Holodomor where four million mainly-Ukrainians were deliberately starved to death by Josef Stalin's Moscow-based regime. Too many elements of the western press were looking the other way. Soviet Communism was being romanticised in certain middle-class and working-class circles in 'the West' (though demonised in others: refer Three Women who Launched a Movement); the mega-atrocities were downplayed by mainstream journalists such as Walter Duranty. It was the full discovery in 1939 of the Holodomor and the later Great Purge (s) that enabled the Nazis to contemplate an even worse genocide, a substantial part of which became the Shoah. The Shoah, while the worst genocide in the last 100 years (at least outside of Mao's China), was neither the first nor the last real-world example of 'hunger games'. ------------- Keith Rankin (keith at rankin dot nz), trained as an economic historian, is a retired lecturer in Economics and Statistics. Fragmenting A Nation: Israel's Enduring Pursuit Of Palestinian Disunity

Israel is aggressively implementing plans to shape Palestine's future and the broader region, sculpting its vision for the 'day after' its genocide in Gaza. The latest, bizarre iteration of this strategy proposes fragmenting the occupied West Bank into so-called 'emirates,' starting with the 'emirate of Hebron.' This unexpected twist in Israel's protracted search for alternative Palestinian leadership first surfaced in the staunchly pro-Israeli US newspaper, the Wall Street Journal. It then quickly dominated all Israeli media. The report details a letter from a person identified by the WSJ as "the leader of Hebron's most influential clan." Addressed to Nir Barakat, Jerusalem's former Israeli mayor, the letter from Sheikh Wadee' al-Jaabari appeals for "cooperation with Israel" in the name of "co-existence." This "co-existence," according to the "clan leader", would materialize in the "Emirate of Hebron." This "emirate" would "recognize the State of Israel as the nation state of the Jewish people," in exchange for reciprocal recognition of the "Emirate of Hebron as the Representative of the Arab residents in the Hebron District." The story may seem perplexing. This is because Palestinian discourse, regardless of geography or political affiliation, has never entertained such an absurd concept as united West Bank 'emirates.' Another element of absurdity is that Palestinian national identity and pride in their people's unwavering resilience, especially in Gaza, are at an unprecedented apex. To float such clan-based alternatives to legitimate Palestinian leadership seems ill-conceived and is destined to fail. Israel's desperation is palpable. In Gaza, it cannot defeat Hamas and other Palestinian factions who have resisted the Israeli takeover of the Strip for 21 months. All attempts to engineer an alternative Palestinian leadership there have utterly collapsed. This failure has compelled Israel to arm and fund a criminal gang that operated before October 7, 2023, in Gaza. This gang functions under the command of Yasser Abu Shabab. The gang has been implicated in a litany of violent activities. These include hijacking humanitarian aid to perpetuate famine in Gaza and orchestrating violence associated with aid distribution, among other egregious crimes. Like the clan leader of Hebron, the Abu Shabab criminal gang possesses no legitimacy and no public support among Palestinians. But why would Israel resort to such disreputable figures when the Palestinian Authority (PA), already engaged in "security coordination" with Israel in the West Bank, is ostensibly willing to comply? The answer lies in the current Israeli extremist government's adamant refusal to acknowledge Palestinians as a nation. Thus, even a collaborating Palestinian nationalist entity would be deemed problematic from an Israeli perspective. While Benjamin Netanyahu's government is not the first Israeli leadership to explore clan-based alternatives among Palestinians, the Israeli prime minister and his extremist allies are exceptionally determined to dismantle any Palestinian claim to nationhood. This was explicitly stated by extremist Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich. He famously declared in Paris, in March 2023, that a Palestinian nation is an "invention." Thus, despite the PA's willingness to cooperate with Israel in controlling Gaza, Israel remains apprehensive. Empowering the PA as a nationalist model fundamentally contravenes Israel's overarching objectives of denying the Palestinian people their very claim to nationhood and, consequently, statehood and sovereignty. Though Israel has consistently failed to establish and sustain its own alternative Palestinian leadership, its repeated efforts have invariably proven disruptive and violent. Prior to the Nakba of 1948, the Zionist movement, alongside British authorities colonizing Palestine, heavily invested in undermining the Arab Higher Committee, anationalist body comprising several political parties. They achieved this by empowering collaborating clans, hoping to dilute the Palestinian nationalist movement. When Israel occupied the remainder of historic Palestine in 1967, it reverted to the same divide-and-conquer tactics. For instance, it established a Palestinian police force directly commanded by Israeli military administrations, in addition to creating an underground network of collaborators. Following the overwhelming victory of nationalist candidates in the 1976 elections in occupied Palestine, Israel responded by cracking down on PLO-affiliated politicians, arresting, deporting and assassinating some. Two years later, in 1978, it launched its 'Village Leagues' project. It hand-picked compliant traditional figures, designating them as the legitimate representatives of Palestinians. These individuals, armed, protected and financed by the Israeli occupation army, were positioned to represent their respective clans in Hebron, Bethlehem, Ramallah, Gaza and elsewhere. Palestinians immediately denounced them as collaborators. They were widely boycotted and socially ostracized. Eventually, it became evident that Israel had no alternative but to engage directly with the PLO. This culminated in the Oslo Accords in 1993 and the subsequent formation of the PA. The fundamental problem, however, persisted: the PA's insistence on a Palestinian state remains anathema to an Israel that has shifted dramatically to the right. This explains Netanyahu's government's unwavering insistence that the PA has no role in Gaza in any 'day after' scenario. While the PA could serve Israel's interest in containing the rebellious Strip, such a triumph would inevitably recenter the discussion of a Palestinian state—a concept repugnant to most Israelis. There is no doubt that neither the Abu Shabab gang nor the Hebron emirate will govern Palestinians, either in Gaza or the West Bank. Israel's insistence on fabricating these alternatives, however, underscores its historic determination to deny Palestinians any sense of nationhood. Israel's persistent fantasies of control invariably fail.
