‘Son of Sardaar 2' review: A confused, half-hearted comedy

Mint3 days ago
Thirteen years after Son of Sardaar hit cinemas with its brand of crowd-pleasing comedy, its sequel arrives with less humour and even less purpose. Vijay Kumar Arora takes the helm of Son of Sardaar 2, repackaging the chaotic energy of the original into a modern comedy about mistaken identities, cross-border friction, and manufactured family values.
Son of Sardaar 2 is not a direct narrative continuation of the original but borrows the premise of an impromptu fake family assembled for a wedding from the 2017 Turkish film Aile Arasında (Between Family). In this version, a Pakistani family enlists the help of a kind-hearted, gullible Indian Sikh man to help the youngest member marry her Sikh boyfriend.
Ajay Devgn plays Jassi, a gentle Sikh protagonist whose journey from Punjab to the UK—after finally receiving his long-awaited spouse visa—doesn't yield the results he expected. Cuckolded by his wife Dimple (Neeru Bajwa), an aimless Jassi finds himself caught in the middle of India-Pakistan cultural chaos.
Mrunal Thakur is radiant, bringing some life to the screen as Rabia, a wedding performer who lives and works with her girl gang, which includes her stepdaughter Saba (Roshni Walia), Gul (Deepak Dobriyal), and Mehwish (Kubbra Sait).
Rabia convinces Jassi to pretend to be Saba's father in order to win over Saba's boyfriend, Goggi's conservative Sikh father, Raja (Ravi Kishan), a sheep farmer in Scotland who never misses an opportunity to pull out a gun or to bash Pakistan. The film's overuse of India–Pakistan humour is one of its most jarring elements, especially when Raja leads crowds in patriotic chants. The screenplay opts for easy jabs and recycled gags, undermining its half-hearted attempts at conveying a message about unity and tolerance. Jokes about national stereotypes, gender roles, and interfaith romance fly fast and loose, but few actually land.
Jassi poses as an army man, Rabia and her girls pretend to be Indian, and Raja—along with his equally small-minded brothers Tittu (Vindu Dara Singh) and Tony (Mukul Dev)—is almost convinced of the match. Devgn leads an ensemble of interchangeable actors—Sanjay Mishra, Vindu Dara Singh, Sharat Saxena, and Ashwini Kalsekar—who seem to migrate from one ensemble comedy to the next.
Shot in Punjab and the UK, the film does have visual appeal and a clean production design. But these surface-level strengths can't compensate for a screenplay that doesn't know whether it wants to be a satire, a family entertainer, or a commentary on modern relationships.
The performances reflect this uncertainty. Devgn plays Jassi with the kind of weary familiarity that suggests he knows exactly what kind of film he's in—and is content to coast through it. Like the rest of the film, his romance with Mrunal Thakur feels laboured and unconvincing. The supporting cast fares worse, with many actors leaning into broad, theatrical performances that only add to the overall chaos.
Amid all this, Deepak Dobriyal emerges as a rare bright spot. As a quick-thinking trans woman, he brings a much-needed sense of timing and restraint. His natural delivery and understated presence are completely at odds with the rest of the cast's exaggerated antics. Ravi Kishan adds a dash of sparkle to his scenes, though he too is hemmed in by the film's tonal inconsistency.
The film lurches between farce and sentimentality without ever finding its comic rhythm, seeming constantly unsure of who it's entertaining.

Mahavatar Narsimha box office collection day 11: Word-of-mouth hit beats Akshay Kumar's Kesari 2, to cross Rs 100 cr today

Ashwin Kumar's mythological animated film Mahavatar Narsimha has piqued the interest of audiences. The animated film, backed by Kleem Productions and presented by Hombale Films, is on the verge of crossing Rs 100 crore at the domestic box office in just 11 days. Mahavatar Narsimha earned Rs 8 crore on its second Monday (day 11), which is much more than what last week's releases — Ajay Devgn's action comedy Son of Sardaar 2 (Rs 2.25 crore) and Siddhant Chaturvedi and Triptii Dimri-starrer romantic drama Dhadak 2 (Rs 1.4 crore) made on the same day. It's also higher than what Mohit Suri's romantic juggernaut Saiyaara, starring newcomers Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda, earned on its third Monday (Rs 2.5 crore). As per Sacnilk, the current box office collection of Mahavatar Narsimha in India stands at Rs 99.25 crore. Thus, it's most likely that the film will cross the milestone of Rs 100 crore today, becoming the first Indian animated film to achieve the feat in the process. This figure includes earnings from all languages — with the lion's share belonging to the Hindi version, followed by Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, and Malayalam. It helps that Hombale Films, which has been the force behind pan-India Kannada box office hits like the KGF franchise and Kantara, is backing not only Mahavatar Narshimha, but also the next six films of the seven-part Mahavatar Cinematic Universe that Kleem Productions has envisioned. Each instalment will tell the story of a new avatar of Lord Vishnu. Mahavatar Narsimha revolves around the story of Vishnu's incarnation Narsimha, a part-man, part-lion creature, invoked by devotee Prahlada to assassinate King Hirankashyap, who enjoys Lord Brahma's boon of immunity from any kind of death. Prior to this film, the highest grossing animated film from India was VG Samant's Hanuman (2005), based on Lord Hanuman, which earned only Rs 11.68 crore at the worldwide box office. By crossing the Rs 100 crore mark, Mahavatar Narsimha has also surpassed the lifetime earnings of this year's films like Rajkummar Rao-starrer romantic comedy Bhool Chuk Maaf (Rs 74.81 crore), Sunny Deol's action film Jaat (Rs 90.34 crore), and Akshay Kumar's period courtroom drama Kesari 2: The Untold Story of Jallianwala Bagh (Rs 94.48 crore). 'Mythology' is a Greek term which comes from 'mythos,' which means mithya in Sanskrit. Mithya means concocted. I do not feel, in any which way, that we have a concocted past. We have a very strong past. We should celebrate that past, the puranic tales of Bharat. Our puranic tales are very long, deep, and rooted in history,' he said, adding, 'It's about time we access those, feel proud, and build universes for future generations. It's very apparent that it wasn't done that well in the past, but it's about time that we do it now in the way it should be done.'

‘Son of Sardaar 2' box office: Ajay Devgn's comedy struggles amid competition

Ajay Devgn's latest release, Son of Sardaar 2, is struggling to maintain momentum after a decent opening weekend. Despite a star-studded cast and the legacy of its 2012 predecessor, the comedy sequel has seen a steep decline in collections as weekday footfalls drop sharply. According to Sacnilk, the film opened with ₹7.25 crore on Day 1 and gained steam over the weekend with ₹8.25 crore on Saturday and ₹9.25 crore on Sunday, bringing its three-day total to ₹24.75 crore. However, Monday proved to be a major setback. The film saw an 86.92% dip in revenue, managing only ₹1.21 crore on Day 4, taking the total domestic collection to ₹25.96 crore. Industry insiders say weekday blues aren't the only factor. Son of Sardaar 2 is up against stiff competition from current box office performers like Dhadak 2, Saiyaara, and Mahavatar Narsimha. While Dhadak 2 collected ₹1.40 crore and Saiyaara pulled in ₹2.50 crore on Monday, Mahavatar Narsimha dominated with a massive ₹8 crore, outshining all others. Occupancy for Son of Sardaar 2 on Monday remained low at 10.20%, with the highest being 13.23% during evening shows. Despite a wide release with 595 shows in Delhi NCR and 348 in Mumbai, audiences appear to be opting for alternatives. Directed by Vijay Kumar Arora and produced by Ajay Devgn and Jyoti Deshpande, the film features Mrunal Thakur, Sanjay Mishra, Ravi Kishan, and others in supporting roles.
