In a significant step toward easing traffic congestion and improving road safety, the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), in collaboration with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), has initiated a service road widening project along the National highway-48, within PCMC limits.
The project involves widening over 10 kilometers of existing service roads on both sides of the highway.
As per the development plan prepared by NHAI, the existing 12 meter wide service road adjacent to the highway will be expanded by another 12 meters, bringing the total width to 24 meters. The expanded road will be constructed and maintained by NHAI and is expected to handle increased traffic flow more efficiently while ensuring safer conditions for local commuters.
This includes the development of dual-lane service roads with underground drainage systems, footpaths for pedestrians, and properly marked entry and exit points.
Bapu Gaikwad, Executive Engineer, Roads, Traffic & Transportation Planning Department, PCMC, said, 'Till now, we have acquired 80% of the total land needed for the project. Our current focus is on the service road shift, which is a crucial component. We intentionally prioritised developing the service roads before starting flyover construction to avoid major traffic congestion during that phase.'
He added that PCMC is conducting special camps for landowners whose properties are yet to be acquired. 'These camps aim to address concerns and offer solutions. We have also been instructed to coordinate closely with NHAI to ensure smooth execution,' he said.
Residents and commuters have welcomed the move. 'The narrow service roads make daily travel difficult, especially during peak hours. This widening project will make a big difference for people like me who rely on these routes every day,' said Pratik Gurav, a regular commuter.
While the project has received positive responses from residents and commuters, there are ongoing concerns about the displacement of roadside vendors and property owners. PCMC officials have assured that a structured rehabilitation and compensation plan is being finalised in line with government policies.
Once completed, the widened 24 meter service roads are expected to improve regional mobility, reduce bottlenecks, and enhance safety along one of Maharashtra's busiest highway corridors.

Chilla elevated road much delayed, now pillar steel found subpar

Noida: A long-delayed infrastructure project meant to ease traffic between Delhi and Noida has come under fresh scrutiny after the Noida Authority flagged the use of substandard steel in its construction. The quality of steel used in the Rs 893-crore Chilla Elevated Road, under construction by the Uttar Pradesh State Bridge Corporation Limited (UPSBCL), was flagged during a recent review by Noida Authority. The inspection revealed that a non-approved grade of steel was being used in the piling work for the project. On Friday, CEO Lokesh M expressed dissatisfaction with the UPSBCL for using substandard steel in the pillars and issued a notice to the construction agency, directing it to replace the material with the approved grade of steel. You Can Also Check: Noida AQI | Weather in Noida | Bank Holidays in Noida | Public Holidays in Noida UPSBCL general manager Sandeep Gupta told TOI that the particular brand of steel being used is an NHAI-approved supplier listed under national specifications. "The steel used meets the required BIS standard for high-strength deformed bars used in reinforced concrete and is compliant with IRC and MORTH specifications applicable to the project," Gupta said. He added that the brand is widely accepted and used by other public sector undertakings, including the Indian Railways, UP PWD, and the Greater Noida Authority. He also said that regular third-party lab testing is conducted to verify the steel's mechanical and chemical properties, and test reports are available for review. UPSBCL, however, has assured the Noida Authority that it will discontinue use of the current steel brand. Going forward, only materials from reputed suppliers such as SAIL, TATA, RINL, or JSPL will be used for the rest of the work. While only 6% of fresh work has been completed since construction resumed in March this year, the overall progress stands at approximately 20%, including earlier work done before the project stalled in 2021. The six-lane, 5.9-km elevated corridor aims to connect the Chilla Regulator near Mayur Vihar to the Mahamaya Flyover in Noida, offering relief to thousands of daily commuters who currently face up to an hour of congestion along the Delhi-Noida Link Road. First proposed in 2012 and inaugurated by chief minister Yogi Adityanath in 2019, the Chilla elevated road has faced years of delay due to funding bottlenecks, the relocation of a GAIL gas pipeline, and the Covid pandemic. No construction took place between 2021 and early 2025. The project resumed only after MG Contractors was appointed in December 2024, having submitted the lowest bid—7% below the estimated cost. Once completed, the corridor is expected to significantly ease congestion near Film City, Sector 14A/15A, and improve access to Greater Noida, Kalindi Kunj, and Faridabad.

High court glare on property deals

Cuttack: Orissa high court has struck down multiple land transactions involving portions of 4.40 acres of undivided ancestral property in Baniapat Khuntapada and Keonjhar, citing deliberate exclusion of heirs, as well as procedural manipulation. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Accordingly, the court directed Keonjhar district collector to conduct an inquiry into the irregularities and initiate disciplinary action against erring officers. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has also been directed not to release any compensation for the land that was acquired for a highway project and recover any disbursed funds. In the order on July 18, Justice S K Panigrahi declared the sale deeds and all subsequent transfers "vitiated" and legally invalid, observing that the transactions appeared to be a "carefully engineered arrangement" to deprive lawful coparceners (equal shareholders) of their rights. Portions of the land — jointly inherited by three brothers and three sisters — were sold between 2011 and 2014 by two of the brothers without the consent of their sisters. Things became complicated after the land was notified for acquisition in 2015 for a national highway project. An initial compensation of Rs 6.96 crore was awarded, but on appeal, it was enhanced to Rs 21.08 crore. The three sisters then approached the court. The court took note of the fact that the land was routed through Balaram Patra, a daily wage labourer and BPL cardholder, to Dillip Kumar Pati, a buyer from the general caste. "It is difficult to reconcile how a person of limited means could execute crores-worth transactions in months," Justice Panigrahi observed. Justice Panigrahi also came down heavily on the revenue authorities for granting sale permissions and processing mutations without proper scrutiny. "The role of revenue officials reflects not just negligence, but raises a reasonable apprehension of institutional complicity," the court said.

Govt to finalise 27% ethanol blending norms by August: Nitin Gadkari

The Indian government will introduce guidelines for 27 per cent ethanol blending in petrol by the end of August, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari announced on Thursday. In 2023, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched petrol blended with 20 per cent ethanol. Speaking at an event, Gadkari said, 'India has already achieved its target of 20 per cent ethanol blending. In Brazil, the ethanol blend in gasoline is 27 per cent.' Currently, Indian vehicles can run on E20 petrol with minor changes to the engine to prevent corrosion and other issues. Finalising standards for E27 India relies on imports to meet 85 per cent of its oil requirements. 'We import fossil fuels worth ₹22 lakh crore, which is also causing pollution... so diversifying agriculture towards the energy and power sector is the need of the hour,' he added. Flex-fuel vehicle push Gadkari noted that 11 automobile manufacturers have already developed vehicles with flex-fuel engines. 'India is food surplus and there is a need to protect the interests of farmers,' he said. Ethanol, which can be produced from sugarcane, broken rice and other agricultural products, is expected to help reduce India's dependence on foreign oil. India is currently the world's third-largest oil consumer and imports about 88 per cent of its crude oil requirements, making it vulnerable to geopolitical vagaries that can impact crude prices. India achieved its earlier goal of 10 per cent ethanol blending in June 2022, well ahead of the original deadline of November 2022. Reducing pollution a shared duty: Gadkari Earlier this month, Gadkari said that reducing pollution from fossil fuel-powered vehicles is a key responsibility shared by all stakeholders. At an event hosted by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), Gadkari highlighted the importance of switching to cleaner alternatives. He stated that promoting fuels such as ethanol and carrying out widespread tree plantation campaigns are among the most effective ways to tackle pollution. According to him, the government is actively working on both these fronts. To support environmental sustainability, the minister said the government is also making productive use of waste materials in infrastructure projects. He noted that around 8 million tonnes of waste have been used so far in the construction of roads.
