Portugal to expel some 18,000 illegal migrants ahead of snap national election
António Leitão Amaro, Minister of the Presidency, said the center-right government will issue approximately 18,000 notifications to illegal migrants asking them to leave.
According to Amaro, officials will begin next week by asking some 4,500 undocumented migrants to leave voluntarily within 20 days.
The announcement comes in the build-up to the country's early general election, scheduled to be held on 18 May.
Last week, Amaro was quoted in the local press as saying that 'Portugal needs to review its deportation system, which doesn't work."
"It is important to realize that Portugal is one of the three countries in Europe that executes the fewest deportations of people who ordered to leave for violating the rules, including for security reasons,' he said. This month's snap ballot was called in March by Prime Minister Luis Montenegro after his minority government, led by his conservative Social Democratic Party, lost a confidence vote in Parliament and stood down.Montenegro, who took power less than a year ago, was accused of a potential conflict of interest regarding a family law firm. The firm was alleged to have received payments from a company with a major gambling concession granted by the government. To 'dispel uncertainty,' Montenegro called for snap elections. Instead, opposition parties teamed up to topple him.His government, a two-party alliance, was in power for less than a year and had just 80 seats in the current 230-seat legislature. An overwhelming majority of opposition lawmakers, led by the center-left Socialists and Chega, which together hold 128 seats, vowed to vote against it and followed through. The upcoming poll pitches the country of 10.6 million people into months of political uncertainty, just as it is in the process of investing more than €22 billion in EU development funds to retool its economy.Political analysts have also noted with concern the rising European tide of populism in the country, with the far-right Chega party surging into third place in last year's election.Since transitioning to democracy in the wake of the 1974 Carnation Revolution, which ended a four-decade dictatorship, Portugal has not experienced political turmoil as it is seeing now.The demise of the minority government in March marks the worst spell of political instability in 50 years of the country's democracy. — Euronews

Aid Entering Gaza Remains 'Very Insufficient': Germany
The German government said on Saturday despite a limited improvement, the amount of aid entering Gaza is still 'very insufficient,' according to AFP. These remarks followed the Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul's visit to the region on Thursday and Friday and the airdropping of Germany's first food airdrops into Gaza. The government spokesman Stefan Kornelius stated that his country 'notes limited initial progress in the delivery of humanitarian aid to the population of the Gaza Strip, which, however, remains very insufficient to alleviate the emergency situation.' Kornelius also underscored that 'Israel remains obligated to ensure the full delivery of aid.' Diplomatic Isolation On Thursday, Wadephul stated that Israel is facing growing diplomatic isolation over the deteriorating humanitarian crisis in Gaza and mounting international support for Palestinian statehood, according to Al Arabiya. He also noted that that the recent UN conference on a two-state solution to the I sraeli-Palestinian conflict — boycotted by the US and Israel — showed that 'Israel is finding itself increasingly in the minority.' Several European countries have recently announced their plans to recognize a state of Palestine without previous negotiations. However, Germany , one of Israel's staunchest diplomatic allies, is not planning to recognize the Palestinian state in the short term, according to Reuters. A German government spokesperson said on Friday that his country's top priority now is to make 'long-overdue progress' towards a two-state solution. Germany's position on Israel in the context of the Gaza war is deeply shaped by its sense of special responsibility to atone for the Holocaust, during which six million European Jews were killed under Hitler's regime between 1933 and 1945. Wadephul also repeated Berlin's position that 'the recognition of a Palestinian state should come at the end of the process' of negotiations. However, he sharpened his tone slightly by insisting that 'this process must begin now' and that 'Germany will also be forced to react to unilateral moves.' Italy Launches Critical Gaza Aid Drops as Famine Threat Looms
Italy announced on Friday that it will begin aid airdrops over Gaza, where UN-backed experts warn the region is slipping into famine, marking Italy as the latest European country to respond to the escalating humanitarian crisis. Italy's Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani confirmed the decision, stating, 'I have given the green light to a mission involving Army and Air Force assets for the transport and airdrop of basic necessities to civilians in Gaza, who have been severely affected by the ongoing conflict.' The Italian Air Force will collaborate with Jordan's military to deliver special containers filled with essential goods. Tajani indicated that the first air drops could occur as early as 9 August. This timely intervention aims to provide immediate relief to those suffering from the dire conditions in Gaza. European Efforts to Provide Aid Spain also announced on Friday that it successfully air-dropped 12 tonnes of food into Gaza, joining efforts from Britain and France, which have partnered with Middle Eastern nations to deliver crucial humanitarian supplies by air to the Palestinian enclave. Furthermore, this coordinated approach provides a crucial lifeline for Gaza's starving population as traditional supply routes remain restricted. European countries recognize the urgency of delivering aid before famine conditions worsen across the region. Therefore, these air operations represent a significant expansion of international efforts to address Gaza's humanitarian emergency. The timely delivery of essential goods could prevent further deterioration of living conditions for thousands of civilians. Since Sunday, in addition to authorizing airdrops, Israel has allowed around 200 trucks per day from UN agencies and other organizations to enter Gaza. Before the war, about 500 trucks entered the territory each day. Short link : Post Views: 19

France Launches Humanitarian Airdrop Operation for Gaza amid Starvation Crisis
France began airdropping 40 tons of humanitarian aid to Gaza on Friday and urged Israel to allow full access to the area amid a worsening starvation crisis, according to Reuters. 'Faced with the absolute urgency, we have just conducted a food airdrop operation in Gaza. Thank you to our Jordanian, Emirati, and German partners for their support, and to our military personnel for their commitment,' President Emmanuel Macron wrote on social media platform X. Macron also noted that a irdrops are not enough. Thus, Israel must allow full humanitarian access to encounter the risk of famine in the Palestinian enclave. Moreover, Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot earlier in the day had told broadcaster franceinfo that France was sending four flights carrying 10 tons of humanitarian aid to Gaza from Jordan. Meanwhile, Macron's office mentioned that France took part six times in the European humanitarian airlift —launched by the EU in mid-October 2023— to deliver aid to Gaza via Jordan and Egypt. Last week, Emmanuel Macron announced his plan to recognize a Palestinian state at the UN General Assembly in September. Spain Airdrops Aid into Gaza On Monday, Spain also announced it would airlift 12 tons of food into Gaza this week as the starvation crisis is worsening in the Palestinian enclave after 21 months of war, according to Al Arabiya. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, one of the outspoken critics of Israel's genocide in Gaza, told a news conference the aid delivery would take place from Jordan on Friday through Spanish air force planes. 'The famine in Gaza is a shame for all of humanity and stopping it, therefore, is a moral imperative,' Sanchez said. Regional Relief Efforts On Sunday, the Royal Jordanian Air Force and UAE Air Force C-130 aircraft successfully carried out three humanitarian airdrops full of food and basic necessities amid the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza. Dozens of Gazans including children have lost their souls due to malnutrition throughout the 21 months of war, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.
