
PVR INOX moves Madras High Court again challenging proposed closure of multiplex at Chennai airport's Aerohub
Justice N. Anand Venkatesh, on Thursday (June 26) directed the AAI to file its counter affidavit by July 8 and ordered maintenance of status quo till then, since senior counsel P.S. Raman, representing PVR INOX, reported that the company had invested ₹20 crore on the multiplex and that it could not be closed down at will.
On the other hand, Additional Solicitor General (ASG) AR.L. Sundaresan, assisted by AAI counsel Ramaswamy Meyyappan, told the court nothing would happen if the Chennai city is devoid of just one multiplex. He also brought it to the notice of the court that AAI had not signed any direct contract with the multiplex operator.
In his submissions, Mr. Raman said, AAI had entered into a development contract with Meenambakkam Realty Private Limited, a special purpose vehicle floated by Olympia Techpark (Chennai) Private Limited, for the construction of Aerohub and that PVR INOX was a sub-licencee of Meenambakkam Realty.
Following disputes, AAI had prematurely terminated the development agreement with Meenambakkam Realty but did not order closure any of the commercial establishments run by sub-licencees but for insisting upon closure of the multiplex alone on the ground that cinema hall was not permissible under the AAI Act of 1994.
Mr. Raman contended the AAI Act does not contain any express prohibition on operation of cinema halls at the airports. He said, Section 12(f) of the Act only states that the functions of AAI would include the establishment and maintenance of hotels, restaurants or restrooms either at the airports or near the airports.
'If it is the case of AAI that nothing but for hotels, restaurants and restrooms can be operated by AAI, then how is it that Ramraj Cotton is selling dhotis and Higginbothams is selling books. There is a gymnasium too and every other conceivable activity that could be found in any other shopping mall is found in the Aerohub too,' he said.
Contending the AAI could not project the operation of a cinema hall in the airport as an illegal activity, the senior counsel said, the authority was bound by the doctrine of promissory estoppel since the construction of the cinema hall was done with the full consent of AAI which had approved the building plan.

Jindal Steel has received a letter of intent (LoI) from the Odisha government granting it a 50-year mining lease for the Roida-I iron ore and manganese block in Keonjhar district , reports PTI. The block spans 104.84 hectares and has an environmental clearance for an annual extraction capacity of 3 million tonnes. The site contains a mineral deposit of 126.05 million tonnes, says the company. With the Roida-I block, we are significantly bolstering our iron ore and manganese supply base, which will ensure operational stability, cost efficiency, and support our growth plans,' said Pankaj Malhan, Executive Director, Jindal Steel. The LoI follows Jindal Steel's successful bid in the e-auction conducted on June 6, 2025, where it was declared the preferred bidder under the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, 1957, and the Mineral (Auction) Rules, 2015. The company said the block will contribute to its raw material supply and support its integrated operations in eastern India.

Reviewing CCI order, will take appropriate legal recourse: Asian Paints
Asian Paints is reviewing the order passed by fair trade regulator CCI directing a probe against the country's leading paint maker for alleged abuse of its dominant position in the market and said it plans to take appropriate legal recourse. Asian Paints said it will cooperate with the Competition Commission of India (CCI) in the investigation over allegations of exclusionary practices. "The company is currently reviewing the order and will take appropriate legal recourse. The company remains committed to fully cooperating with the CCI during the course of the investigation," Asian Paint said in a late night regulatory filing on Thursday. Earlier this week, CCI ordered an investigation against Asian Paints for allegedly abusing its dominant position in the market for manufacturing and sales of decorative paint over the complaints filed by Aditya Birla group firm Grasim Industries. Grasim, a new entrant in the domestic paint industry with brand Birla Opus, had accused Asian Paints of engaging in exclusionary practices aimed at stifling its entry and growth in the Indian decorative paint segment. "The Commission is of the opinion that a prima facie case of contravention of the provisions of section 4(2)(a)(i), 4(2)(c) and 4(2)(d) of the Act by the OP (Asian Paints) is made out in the present matter," CCI said in the order. Section 4 of the Competition Act, 2002, prohibits abuse of dominant position. CCI has directed its probe unit Director General for an investigation into the allegations and submit a preliminary report within a period of 90 days. CCI had observed that Asian Paints, by restraining its dealers from dealing with Grasim's Birla Opus by enforcing exclusivity upon them, which is imposition of unfair conditions upon them, found to be in the nature of exploitative conduct. The CCI order had also clarified that observations made were not a final view on the case merits and directed the DG to conduct the probe without being swayed in any manner whatsoever by the observations made by it. In the last 5-6 years, several new players have entered the paint market, including Pidilite with Haisha Paints, Grasim with its Birla Opus, and JSW Paints. Besides, pipes and fittings manufacturer Astral acquired Gem Paints and JK Cements acquired Acro Paints making its entry into the paint sector. However, Asian Paints still controls over 50 per cent of the decorative paint market in India, followed by Berger Paints, and Kansai Nerolac. According to reports, these three major players in the Indian paint industry control over three-fourths of the market. According to an ICICI Direct report, the size of the India Paint and Coatings Market is estimated at USD 9.60 billion in 2024. It is expected to reach USD 15.04 billion by 2029, growing at a CAGR of 9.38 per cent between 2024 and 2029.
