'Please let me make it through': Inside Detroit Metro Airport's flooded tunnel

The Brief
Heavy rains on Monday caused significant flooding in Romulus, including the Detroit Metro Airport, which experienced a ground stop and inaccessible terminals.
Over 2.5 inches of rain fell in just over an hour in Romulus, leading to major traffic backups and delays for travelers trying to enter or leave the airport.
Drivers are advised to avoid flooded areas, as seen by one traveler's harrowing experience driving through deep water, and a passenger facing a two-hour delay after a long international flight.
ROMULUS, Mich. (FOX 2) - When Monday's heavy rains dumped several inches of water on Southeast Michigan, Romulus was hit the hardest, with over 2.5 inches of rain in a little more than an hour.
The rain fell so hard and so fast, a ground stop was issued at Detroit Metro Airport and McNamara Terminal was inaccessible due to flooding.
The driver said she was leaving the Delta terminal and driving down Dingell Drive through the tunnel, as deep water was flowing.
"Dear God, please let me make it through," the woman at the wheel could be heard repeating as she anxiously drove through floodwaters.
She was able to get through the water, but this is highly recommended against. If you see standing water, turn around and go a different way or wait out the water.
Big picture view
One man added at least two hours to his road trip home to Novi after flying 30 hours from India.
Massive flooding in Romulus and in tunnels leading to and from Detroit Metro Airport prompted major traffic backups and frustrating delays.
Sreeni Reddy zoomed with FOX 2 from his Uber ride home to Novi after a summer vacation in India.
"Somebody at the airport came in and then said both of the tunnels are flooded so nobody can get in, get out of the airport," he said. "We cross seven oceans but not two tunnels, I guess. We booked an Uber ride and then the ride kept saying 7 minutes, 10 minutes and then kept changing. We didn't know what was going on."
It unfortunately got worse from there.
"We were stuck at the airport for more than 90 minutes after nearly 30 hours of travel," Reddy said.

U.S. Tightens Visas, Oyo Enters Australia and Europe Flies Bigger and Farther

Skift Travel Podcasts Good morning from Skift. It's Tuesday, August 5. Here's what you need to know about the business of travel today. Some visitors to the U.S. might face a new financial challenge. The U.S. plans to require bonds of up to $15,000 for some tourist and business visas under a pilot program slated to start on August 20, reports Associate Editor Rashaad Jorden. The 12-month program would give U.S. consular officers the discretion to require bonds for travelers from countries with high rates of visa overstays, according to a Federal Registry notice published on Monday. The notice said the rule is a key part of the White House's efforts to tackle threats posed by visa overstays and deficient screening and vetting. The State Department estimates that 2,000 travelers will be required to post the bond. Officers are expected to set the bond at $10,000, but they can increase that figure to $15,000 if they don't believe it's enough to ensure a timely departure. Listen to This Podcast Apple Podcasts | Spotify | Youtube | RSS Next, Indian hospitality company Oyo has bought Australian short-term rental platform MadeComfy in a deal valued at more than $50 million, reports Asia Editor Peden Doma Bhutia. Oyo's acquisition represents its entry into the Australian and New Zealand markets. MadeComfy currently manages more than 1,300 properties with nearly 100 real estate agencies. Bhutia writes Oyo's goal is to expand MadeComfy across Australia and New Zealand and possibly into other countries where Oyo already operates. Finally, new data has revealed that flights in Europe are getting longer and planes on the continent are bigger, reports Airlines Editor Gordon Smith. The average flight distance in Europe hit just over 1,000 nautical miles last year, according to air traffic control organization Eurocontrol. Although the 2024 figure is a modest increase from the previous year, Smith notes it's part of a much larger structural shift as domestic and regional routes are in decline. In addition, the average maximum take-off weight of an aircraft jumped to just over 90 tonnes, up from both 2023 and 2018. Smith notes the increase is a sign of airlines emphasizing larger planes over regional jets.

U.S. visa bonds would charge some foreign travelers $15,000 deposits

The State Department plans to start running a pilot program this month that would require some foreign travelers to pay up to $15,000 for a reimbursable visa bond that deters them from staying in the U.S. longer than they're allowed for business or tourism. Some details are outlined in a public notice that appeared Monday on the Federal Register, but many are still unclear, including which countries would be targeted by the program.

Three Pennsylvania amusement and water parks listed in new ranking of the best in the U.S.

Three Pennsylvania amusement parks have been included in a new ranking of the best amusement and water parks in the United States. Knoebels, Splash Lagoon, and Hersheypark all landed inside the new ranking of the top 20 parks, which were compiled and ranked by Tripadvisor. The list of best amusement and water parks is part of Tripadvisor's Travelers' Choice Awards Best of the Best, which they say are awarded to places that "receive a high volume of above-and-beyond reviews and opinions from the Tripadvisor community over a 12-month period." Knoebels Amusement Resort, which is located in central Pennsylvania, was ranked No. 3 on the list of best amusement and water parks, is the largest free-admission amusement park in the country. The park is slated to celebrate its 100th season next year. Recognized for its roller coasters, kid-friendly rides, swimming, campus, and golf course, Tripadvisor says "the accommodating staff, clean facilities, and fun attractions make for a memorable family-friendly visit" at Knoebels. Splash Lagoon Indoor Water Park Resort, a popular Polynesian-themed water park in Erie, was ranked No. 15 on the list Tripadvisor said that Splash Lagoon is warm and inviting, even in the winter, and noted its slides, pools, lazy river, extreme rides, laser tag, and more. "Don't miss a visit to nearby Lake Erie, which adds to the family-friendly fun," Tripadvisor said. Hersheypark, which is located outside Harrisburg in Hershey, landed in the No. 18 spot on the list, was founded in 1906 for the employees of the Hershey Chocolate Company, and now over 100 years later, it's one of the best parks in the country. "It's still a sweet escape, with thrilling rides and lots of treats," Tripadvisor said. "Clean facilities, attentive staff, and affordable prices add to the appeal." Not far from Pennsylvania in nearby Ohio, Cedar Point, which is known for its 18 roller coasters, landed in the No. 16 spot on the list.
