Chhattisgarh: Man killed in gunfight with security forces on June 5 not a Maoist, claims family
The man, Mahesh Kudiyam from Irpagutta village, had been a cook at a government school for more than a year, they said. However, the police claimed that he was also a member of the banned Communist Party of India (Maoist) with a reward of Rs 1 lakh on his head, The Indian Express reported.
Kudiyam, along with six others, was killed by security forces in the Indravati National Park area in a joint operation on June 5. Gautam alias Sudhakar, a central committee member of the Communist Party of India (Maoist), was also among those killed in the gunfight.
The central committee is the highest decision-making body of the Communist Party of India (Maoist).
Several gunfights were reported between June 5 and June 7 as part of the operation, The Hindu reported. On June 10, the police issued a statement identifying one of the men killed as Kudiyam, who was allegedly a part of the Communist Party of India (Maoist)'s National Park area committee.
However, Kudiyam's wife Sumitra, brothers and a few residents of the village, in an interview with Bastar-based YouTube channel Bastar Talkies released on Sunday, claimed that Kudiyam was not a Maoist.
Kudiyam was just a cook and a peon in the government school in the village, a resident named Irma Vela added. His family also claimed that he had gone to graze his cattle on the day of the alleged gunfight.
Sundarraj P, inspector general of police for the Bastar Range, also confirmed that Kudiyam was a cook at the government school, The Hindu reported. However, a statement released by the police officer added that he was also a Maoist.
'During inquest proceedings, it was confirmed that Mahesh Kodiyam was a party member of the banned CPI (Maoist) organisation operating in the National Park Area division, and he had clear links with the proscribed group,' the newspaper quoted the statement as saying.
It said that Kodiyam's appointment as a cook at the government school had been made by the village school management committee, and added that he was being paid remuneration for this role until March.
'The circumstances under which Mahesh Kodiyam came into contact with senior Maoist leaders, like Central Committee member Gautam and State Committee member Bhaskar, are currently under investigation,' the statement said. A thorough, impartial, and professional inquiry is being conducted into all aspects of the case.'
It urged persons associated with the Communist Party of India (Maoist) to 'immediately sever' all such ties. 'Continued association with this extremist outfit poses a serious threat not only to public safety and regional peace but also to the lives and future of those involved,' the statement said.
More than 400 suspected Maoists have been killed in the Bastar region in 2024-'25, Chhattisgarh chief minister Vishnu Deo Sai had said earlier this month.
In 2024, 217 suspected Maoists were killed by security forces across Chhattisgarh.
Malini Subramaniam has reported for Scroll that while many of those killed in Chhattisgarh's Bastar region in 2024 were declared by the police to be reward-carrying Maoists, several families dispute the claim. The families claim that the persons killed were civilians.
Two killed by suspected Maoists in Bijapur
On June 21, two persons alleged to be police informers were killed by suspected Maoists in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district, The Indian Express reported. The incident took place in the Sendrobor and Yampur villages in the jurisdiction of the Pamed Police Station.
An unidentified official told the newspaper that a group of suspected Maoists came to the villages on Saturday night and killed the two civilians after 'suspecting them to be police informers'.
This came a day before Union Home Minister Amit Shah was set to begin his two-day visit to Chhattisgarh to review the ongoing anti-Maoist operations in the state.
On June 17, three persons in the Bijapur district were also strangled to death by suspected Maoists in the village of Peddakorma, PTI reported. Two of those killed were relatives of Dinesh Modiyam, a Maoist commander who surrendered before the security forces in March, the news agency quoted an unidentified official as saying.

Families of blasts victims look back in anger
Malegaon: 'Have they been let off just today? Wasn't Sadhvi already free?' The youngest victim, Farheen, was 10 years old when she was killed in the blasts in 2008. 'Uparwala saza dega.' (God will punish them.) These words from relatives of those who died in the 2008 Malegaon blast, which occurred in the month of Ramzan, encapsulate the sentiment of the six affected families in this power loom city in Nashik district, soon after the National Investigation Agency (NIA) court's verdict on Thursday. Old, ailing and abandoned by all political parties, these families, among the poorest residents of this city, have barely been able to keep track of the many twists and turns of the case. After the acquittal of all the accused in the 2006 Mumbai train blasts last week, the question being asked in Malegaon was simple –– will this be repeated in the Malegaon blast case. And if so, will the government rush to appeal as it did in the train blasts case? 'The home minister's speech in Parliament gave an inkling of the verdict,' said Aleem Faizee, founder editor of the Malegaon-based news website referring to Amit Shah's comment on Wednesday that no Hindu could ever be a terrorist. 'We have not got justice; we will appeal,' said Mufti Ismail, Malegaon MLA and general secretary of the Jamiat Ulema, which arranged for lawyers to represent the intervenors in the case. Advocate Irfana Hamdani added, 'We need to study the judgment to know how the evidence was placed before the court. The ATS charge sheet had both audio and video records of strategy meetings and phone conversations, recorded by one of the accused, and these pointed to Pragya Thakur's involvement.' Infirm and hard of hearing, Syed Nisar, 74, whose son died in the blast, has been the voice of the victims in the NIA court. He intervened in 2017 when the NIA said it had no objection to Sadhvi Pragya's bail application. 'This was not out of enmity for any community, but for justice,'' he clarified. 'My son was just 19.' The former scrap dealer is ready to continue fighting. Ainoor Bi lost her 23-year-old son Irfan, who helped her sell vegetables, in the blast. 'How could they not have been punished?'' she asked. 'Imagine what it means for parents to lose their young child.' After Irfan's death, she tried to resume work but could not do so as returning to the same spot in the market where her son's friends worked was unbearable. Hussain Shaha, who lost his father Harun, a power loom worker, was at his usual spot selling vegetable fritters even on the day the verdict was pronounced. The verdict means nothing to his mother, he said. 'Her health started failing after my father died; she is so far gone, she does not even recognise me.' 'Hemant Karkare (then ATS chief) had uncovered everything. If only he'd been alive…' rued Liaquat, father of the youngest victim. Holding up a picture of his then 10-year-old daughter Farheen, he said it was given to him by her teacher who took it from Farheen's scholarship form. 'My daughter was clever. She loved studies,' said the former truck driver. Karkare is revered in the community. Another set of victims in Malegaon, inextricably linked to the 2008 blast, also remembered him. Nine Muslims were arrested for the first set of blasts in the city in 2006 on Shab e Baraat, a night of prayer, in which 31 Muslims were killed. These men could get bail in 2011 and were finally discharged in 2016 only because Karkare's investigations into the 2008 blast led to a different set of accused for the 2006 blasts too. The appeal against their discharge is pending in the Bombay high court. Thursday's verdict has left people in the community angry. 'Was NIA's duty just to prove the accused innocent, or also to find the real culprits?'' asked eminent surgeon Dr Saeed Farani, who treated victims of both blasts. 'Perhaps we should just learn to live with this.' But what of Malegaon's Hindus? The Mausam river divides Hindus and Muslims geographically in the city. The power loom industry on which the city runs, necessitates interaction but otherwise, there's little intermingling. Gandhian Subhash Pardeshi said: 'When 31 of their fellow citizens died in the 2006 blasts, though Shiv Sena MLA Dada Bhuse sent Shiv Sainiks to donate blood, no Hindu in Malegaon condemned the attack or stepped up to share the grief of the families of the deceased.' 'That silence will continue,' he added.

Lalit Maken, prominent trade union leader and Congress (I) MP from South Delhi, and his wife, Geentanjali, along with a visitor, Balkrishan Khanna, were shot dead in their Kirti Nagar house by two unidentified youths. A Congress (I) worker of the area, Suresh Malik, who used to drive Maken's car, was also shot in the shoulder. He is out of danger. The assailants, it appears, were aware of Maken's programme. 'Gas Leak Sabotage' The Union Carbide Corporation has ruled out everything but sabotage as the cause of last year's chemical disaster in Bhopal, the company lawyer, Bud G Holman, said. His comments went further than any previous statement by Union Carbide on the cause of the gas leak that reportedly killed 2,000 people and injured 2,00,000. A company spokesperson, Ed Vand Name Le, said later that the lawyer's statement should have been that the UCC has 'all but ruled out everything but sabotage'. He left open the possibility that the gas leak was accidental. Maken Murder: 3 Held Three persons have been detained in connection with the gruesome murder of Lalit Maken, his wife and a visitor to their house, the commissioner of police, Ved Marwah told a press conference. The three have been detained on the basis of information collected from the five eye witnesses to the crime, he said. All three were residents of South Delhi, Marwah added. The police commissioner promised a reward of Rs 1 lakh to any person giving clues leading to the arrest of Maken's assailants. Parliament Adjourned A stunned and grieved Parliament adjourned as news of Congress (I) MP Lalit Maken's killing came in. Speaker Balram Jakhar, PM Rajiv Gandhi and Opposition leaders paid tributes in the Lok Sabha prior to adjournment. In the Rajya Sabha, chairman R Venkataraman broke the news to a shocked House soon after Question Hour and adjourned the proceedings.

TCA District Committees record statements with CID
Hyderabad: The secretaries from various districts of the Telangana Cricket Association (TCA) appeared before the CID on Thursday and recorded their statements regarding the alleged misuse of funds released by the BCCI for cricket development.
