Twenty-five years ago, a little girl with a bob haircut appeared on our TVs, speaking a mix of English and Spanish, with a spunky, can-do spirit. She had an adventure planned, a backpack, a monkey friend and upbeat songs.
'Hi, I'm Dora. What's your name?' she asked.
This was, of course, 'Dora the Explorer,' the first Latina to lead a major cartoon series and the girl who helped spearhead the rise of multicultural children's programming in the U.S. on her way to becoming a cultural phenomenon.
'The show allowed Latinos to be depicted on TV as educators, teaching viewers how to speak our language, and yet at the same time, just teaching ordinary things that children need to learn,' said Brenda Victoria Castillo, president and CEO of the National Hispanic Media Coalition.
Nickelodeon is celebrating Dora's 25th anniversary with the feature-length live-action movie 'Dora and the Search of Sol Dorado,' a third season of the rebooted animated series 'Dora,' the podcast Dora's Mermaid Adventures, an album of songs and plenty of toys and apparel.
'The great thing about Dora is that, yes, she celebrates Latin culture through every aspect — language, food, dress and music,' says Ramsey Naito president of animation at Paramount and Nickelodeon. 'But she also empowers everybody to be their true self and to be brave. She's not exclusive. She's inclusive.'
Kathleen Herles had a special vantage point to see Dora's influence: She was the original voice of the pint-size heroine, cast in the role when she was 7 and staying until she was 18 and off to college.
'It has been the longest journey and the greatest adventure of my life — no pun intended,' said Herles, who grew up in New York City to parents of Peruvian descent.
On the convention circuit, Herles would see firsthand the power of Dora. 'I remember I would make kids cry, not intentionally,' she says. 'Their mind goes to a memory, to a moment, it's just incredible. It's so special, it's magical.'
Herles has lately been the voice actor for Dora's mom on 'Dora,' the reboot that started in 2024. It's a full-circle moment for the actor and singer: 'It changed my life forever, twice.'
'Dora the Explorer' led to what Herles laughingly calls the 'Dora-verse' — the spinoff series 'Go, Diego, Go!,' a sequel series 'Dora and Friends: Into the City!' and the 2019 live-action feature film 'Dora and the Lost City of Gold,' starring Isabela Merced, Eva Longoria and Michael Peña.
'Dora' co-creator Chris Gifford has watched his creation age up and down and take human form. 'She has been older and she has been younger and she has a hair clip now,' he says. 'Her essence, her positive spirit, her I-can-do-anything-with-your-help attitude has stuck through.'
Dora is firmly part of the culture, as big as her Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade balloon. There's a reference to her in 'Inside Out 2,' she's been mocked on 'Saturday Night Live' and if you look carefully at the PBS show 'Alma's Way,' you can see a Dora doll in that heroine's bedroom. TikTok users have embraced the 'Backpack Song.'
'Those kids coming of age now — the ones who 25 years ago were just watching it as little preschoolers — they're out there and they're remembering,' says Valerie Walsh Valdes, co-creator of the original series and an executive producer on the new series and movie.
Valdes and Gifford originally had the idea for a show about a little girl who was a problem solver. Like 'Blue's Clues,' it would reward kids for figuring out answers posed by the host.
'Preschoolers are the least powerful people in our world,' says Gifford. 'They're not able to button their sweater and not able to tie their shoes, but if they're able to help Dora get to the City of Lost Toys and really feel like they helped, that's something special.'
Nickelodeon suggested the girl be Latina and the creators ran with it, making her pan-Latina so no one would feel excluded. Latin representation on TV — then and now — has been a struggle.
The Latino Donor Collaborative's 2024 Latinos in Media report found that Latino actors made up 9.8% of the main cast in lead, co-lead and ensemble roles in scripted shows. In non-scripted television, Latino hosts made up only 5% of host roles. That's despite Latin people making up nearly 20% of the country.
'There were few programs at the time that featured Latina protagonists with Dora's skin tone or features, so from that perspective, the representation is valuable,' says Erynn Masi de Casanova, head of the Sociology Department at the University of Cincinnati.
Dora was put in an animated world inside a computer, and the creators asked kids to help make the show better. They hired education consultants to tease out the skills Dora teaches, like spatial understanding and interpersonal. They brought in language and culture experts.
'We did it!' became her signature song.
The series is seen in more than 150 countries and territories and translated in 32 languages on Nickelodeon channels and Paramount+. In English-speaking countries such as the United States and Australia, Dora teaches Spanish; in other markets — including the Hispanic U.S. markets — she teaches English.
Samantha Lorraine, 18, who grew up in Miami of Cuban heritage, had the Dora T-shirts and backpack. She laughs that she once even had the Dora bob.
In July, she's starring as Dora in 'Dora and the Search of Sol Dorado,' which was filmed in Colombia. 'I've been doing my audition since day one,' she says.
'It's an honor to be stepping into Dora's shoes. It's such a huge legacy,' she adds. 'It's really nice to be able to be a part of representation where it counts. And Dora is the epitome of that.'
Castillo, of the National Hispanic Media Coalition, puts Dora up there with Mickey Mouse in terms of an instantly recognized cultural character and says she's relevant more than ever.
'We need more Doras,' she says. 'If people were just open to being educated in other people's languages and cultures and beliefs and not see it as a threat, we wouldn't be in the situation that we're in this country and the world.'

She added that, 'surely there will be an audience for the creatively rendered gore. The rest of us may feel left with a witty, visually arresting, highly inventive quasi-mess on our hands.' — If you haven't had enough Pedro Pascal this year, he's a key part of Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck's 'Freaky Tales,' streaming on HBO Max on Friday, Aug. 8. The anthology action comedy follows four interconnected stories in Oakland, California, in 1987. Before the film's Sundance debut in 2024, Boden told the AP that 'It's a movie lover's movie … It has one foot in reality and then one foot just launches off into fantasy.' — AP Film Writer Lindsey Bahr New music to stream — New Orleans legend Big Freedia, the queen of bounce music (and a notable Beyoncé collaborator, lest anyone forget the zeitgeist-shifting 'Renaissance' ), is back with a new album. But 'Pressing Onward' is new territory for the artist. It's her first gospel album and it still manages to induce as much booty-shaking as ever before. The difference this time is that her vibrant sonic celebrations are all about faith. Start with 'Holy Shuffle' featuring Billy Porter or 'Sunday Best' with Tamar Braxton. It's good for the soul. — For several years now, one of the most exciting names in heavy rock music has been BABYMETAL, Japanese kawaii metal trio that marries pop idol culture with chugging riffs, full-throated vocals, blast beats and bilingual lyricism. They've inspired fanfare across the globe, and on Friday, they'll release their fifth studio album, 'METAL FORTH.' It features guest spots from Poppy, Spiritbox and Rage Against the Machine's Tom Morello. Clearly, it's not for the faint of heart. — AP Music Writer Maria Sherman New series to stream — Would you believe it's been 15 years since 'King of the Hill' went off the air? The animated comedy returns Monday with a new 14th season on its new home, Hulu. All 10-episodes drop at once for bingeing. The show picks up give or take 10 years after the events of season 13. Will is struggling to open his bar and Sylvia's event-planning business has yet to take off. — More than two years ago, AMC Networks pulled the plug on its sci-fi comedy 'Demascus ' as a cost-cutting measure even though production was already completed. Tubi has rescued the show, starring Okieriete Onaodowan, and it premieres Thursday. It's about a man who begins using an experimental technology that allows him to experience different timelines of his life. — The 'Outlander' prequel 'Outlander: Blood of my Blood' debuts on Starz on Friday, Aug. 8. It's about the parents of Claire and Jamie from 'Outlander.' Unlike its predecessor, 'Blood of my Blood' does not have source material by author Diana Gabaldon but its showrunner Matthew B. Roberts also works on 'Outlander' and is very familiar with the lore. The cast is already filming a second season. It streams on the Starz App or through platforms like Hulu and Prime Video. — The 'Welcome to Wrexham' spinoff "NECAXA ' premieres Thursday on FX on Hulu. After their success owning the Welsh soccer team Wrexham AFC, Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney join Eva Longoria and buy a stake in a Mexican club, NECAXA, 'It's more than winning games. We're gonna win hearts. We're gonna inspire pride. We're gonna empower the team,' Longoria says in the trailer. — Alicia Rancilio New video games to play — The Mafia series from 2K Games has moved from 1930s Chicago to 1940s New York to 1960s New Orleans, but now it's going back in time and space. Mafia: The Old Country aims to deliver an origin story of sorts, traveling to 1900s Sicily. Enzo Favara is a young man who's suffered a rough childhood, and he is hoping to improve his status by working for the Torrisi crime family. That means pulling off heists, punching out rivals and killing anyone who might threaten the Don. The cars may be slower and the weapons may not be as slick, but if you're bummed out about having to wait for the next Grand Theft Auto, you might want to spend some time with the original gangsters. It arrives Friday, Aug. 8, on PlayStation 5, Xbox X/S and PC. — Lou Kesten © 2025 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. "The Fantastic Four: First Steps" holds its lead atop the box office

This image released by Disney shows Pedro Pascal in a scene from "The Fantastic Four: First Steps." (Marvel/Disney via AP) By ITZEL LUNA Marvel's first family stumbled in theaters in its second weekend, but still held on to the top spot at the box office. 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps' earned $40 million from 4,125 North American theaters, a 66% drop from a healthy $117.6 million debut. The film was accompanied by comedies 'The Bad Guys 2' and 'The Naked Gun" in the top three box office rankings. The superhero movie dipped significantly more than Marvel's previous film, 'Thunderbolts,' which took a 55% dive in its second weekend. 'First Steps' is the last major blockbuster of the summer. It added nearly $40 million internationally in its second weekend, bringing thefilm's global total to $369 million. The movie's box office drop off was surprising given its strong reviews, said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for the data firm Comscore. Though the movie's debut weekend may have given box office results a strong push toward the $4 billion summer benchmark, August is off to a slow start, he said. 'It's a tough lift, but we might be able to get there. It really means that all the films are gonna have to stand on their own,' Dergarabedian said. 'It's gonna be about getting great reviews, having that staying power, that longevity in the marketplace.' Newcomer comedy 'The Bad Guys 2' earned second place at the box office this weekend, with $22 million from 3,852 North American theaters. That was on par with projections and also in line with the first movie in the series, which brought in $23 million in 2022. Paramount's slapstick comedy, 'The Naked Gun,' also in its debut weekend, snagged the third box office spot, earning $17 million from 3,344 locations. Jim Orr, president of domestic distribution for Universal Pictures, said the solid debut for 'The Bad Guys 2,' coupled with strong audience reaction scores, 'should point to a very long, very successful run through not only the rest of the summer, but really, I think into the fall." James Gunn's 'Superman,' which opened four weekends ago and already crossed $550 million globally, earned $13.8 million domestically this weekend, taking the fourth spot. 'Jurassic World Rebirth' followed with $8.7 million. The horror movie 'Together' had a strong debut weekend, coming in at sixth place and earning $6.8 million domestically, proof that August is a month for edgier and off-beat films, Dergarabedian said. 'That's what this month is about. It's not just about box office," Dergarabedian said. "It's also about providing really interesting, rewarding movie-going experiences for audiences.' Dergarabedian said he expects highly-anticipated movies hitting theaters in the next few weeks — including 'Freakier Friday,' and Zach Cregger's horror movie 'Weapons' — to give August a needed boost. The box office is currently up 9.5% from last year. With final domestic figures being released Monday, this list factors in the estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore: 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps," $40 million. 'The Bad Guys 2,' $22.2 million. 'The Naked Gun,' $17 million. 'Superman,' $13.8 million. 'Jurassic World Rebirth,' $8.7 million. 'Together,' $6.8 million. 'F1: The Movie,' $4.1 million. 'I Know What You Did Last Summer,' $2.7 million. 'Smurfs,' $1.8 million. 'How to Train Your Dragon,' $1.4 million. © Copyright 2025 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. Tokyo train stations giving out awesome giant Pokémon cards, but you'll want to hurry

JR East's easy-to-complete Pokémon stamp rally can only last as long as its card supply does. It's often been said that the journey itself is more important than the destination. But you know what's even better? A journey that gets you some cool exclusive Pokémon merch. That sort of doesn't-matter-exactly-where-you-go philosophy is the underlying idea for rail operator East Japan Railway Company/JR East's Pokémon Stamp Rally 2025, which is going on right now in Tokyo. In a stamp rally, you start by receiving a sheet with blank spaces on it, then you travel to various stations on the train network where there are special stamps you use to fill up your sheet. When you're all done, you turn in the completed sheet and receive a prize. As far as stamp rallies go, the JR East Pokémon Stamp Rally 2025 is pretty easy to complete. Major stations in the Tokyo area give out the stamp sheet for free, and you only need six stamps to fill it up. With a total of 36 stations that have stamps in Tokyo and its neighboring prefectures of Chiba, Saitama, and Kanagawa, it's not hard to plot a route to complete your sheet, either as a dedicated course to follow all in one fell swoop or to fold into your other sightseeing plans. ▼ Map of the 36 stamp stations (we'll explain the 'Stage 2 stamps' in a bit) Each station's stamp features a different Pokémon species, and you can find the stamp itself by following the signs that say スタンプはこちら ('stamp this way') with an arrow, or by asking the station staff ' Pokémon no sutampu wa doko ni arimasu ka ?' The stamps are always located outside the ticket gates, by the way. ▼ A sign pointing the way to the Mega Ampharos stamp inside downtown Tokyo's Yoyogi Station Once you've got six stamps, bring your completed sheet to one of the New Days station convenience stores listed below… …where you'll then receive this awesome Pikachu ex Jumbo Card! As mentioned, with just six stamps this is a pretty quick and easy rally to complete, but that's because that's just Stage 1 of the Pokémon Stamp Rally 2025. For Stage 2, there are different prizes if you gather 12 or all 36 stamps…or at least there were. As you can probably guess, there are a lot of Pokémon fans in the greater Tokyo area, and Stage 2 supplies have already been depleted. Luckily, the Stage 1 rally is still going on, but while it's scheduled ending date is August 31, that might get moved up if they run out of Pikachu ex Jumbo Cards, so you'll want to get to rallying sooner rather than later.
