KUCHING, July 21 (Bernama) -- A line from the Sarawak state anthem, "Ibu Pertiwiku," is a fitting reminder, especially as the people of the Land of the Hornbills celebrate Sarawak Day tomorrow (July 22).
"Sarawak dalam Malaysia, aman makmur rahmat Tuhan maha esa (Sarawak, a part of Malaysia, blessed by God with peace and prosperity)" is a line from the lyrics of the state's anthem, which has been played at every official event held in this Land of the Hornbills since 1988.
Out of all the states and territories in this country, "Ibu Pertiwiku" is the only state anthem that contains the word "Malaysia" in its lyrics.
This verse is not just an ordinary line of lyrics, but a declaration that reflects Sarawak's unique identity as a state proud of its heritage, yet at the same time, firmly bound within the Federation of Malaysia.
It outlines Sarawak's acceptance and commitment to the formation of Malaysia in 1963, while still preserving the agreed-upon sovereignty and autonomy.
For National Council of Professors senior fellow Datuk Dr Jeniri Amir, the word 'Malaysia' in the lyrics of the Sarawak state anthem is very significant because it is a clear reflection that the state spirit can unite with a broader national consciousness.
According to him, the lyrics show how the leaders and people of this Land of the Hornbills are always fully aware that Sarawak is part of Malaysia and the importance of moving forward together within the context of a federation.
"Awareness of the importance of Sarawak moving in tandem within the context of a federation is very important, not only to strengthen unity at the state level, but also the spirit of federalism and unity at the national level," he told Bernama.

JKT To Provide SOPs For Community Service Enforcement

KUALA LUMPUR, July 21 (Bernama) -- The Local Government Department (JKT) will issue standard operating procedures (SOPs) to local authorities (PBTs) to ensure uniform implementation of court-ordered community service sentences for individuals convicted of littering in public areas. Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming said the SOPs will be introduced following the passing of the Local Government (Amendment) Bill 2025 in the Dewan Rakyat today, to ensure effective implementation of the law while upholding social justice for all offenders. Nga added that capacity building is important for PBT officers, especially when dealing with young offenders. 'They must fully understand not only the provisions under the Local Government Act 1976 (Act 171) but also the Child Act 2001 (Act 611), which has been taken into account in the ministry's implementation plan to ensure effective legal enforcement,' he said when winding up the debate on the Bill. The Bill was passed by a majority voice vote after being debated by eight Members of Parliament from both the government and opposition blocs. The amendment introduces a new Subsection 104A(1), which empowers the courts to order individuals convicted of breaching by-laws under Act 171 to perform up to 12 hours of community service, in addition to any fines imposed. Subsection 104A(3) provides that authorised PBT officers shall determine the time and place for carrying out the community service once a court order is issued. Meanwhile, Subsection 104A(8) states that if the offender is under the age of 18, provisions under Act 611 regarding community service orders will apply. Nga further said the ministry has outlined several strategies to enhance the effectiveness of the law, including increasing the number of authorised PBT officers for enforcement and monitoring purposes.

GCC Urges International Community To Act Urgently To Lift Siege On Gaza

Palestinian casualties of Israeli fire, who were seeking aid supplies, according to medics, are transported on a cart, after aid entered Gaza through Israel, amid a hunger crisis, in the northern Gaza Strip July 20, 2025. REUTERS/Dawoud Abu Alkas RIYADH, July 21 (Bernama-QNA) -- The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) expressed its condemnation and strong denunciation of the continued unjust, inhumane, and illegal siege imposed by Israeli occupation forces on the Gaza Strip and their prevention of the entry of all forms of humanitarian aid, Qatar News Agency (QNA) reported. In a statement on Monday, Secretary General of the GCC Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi emphasised that the siege has resulted in a worsening humanitarian catastrophe. He added that the situation manifested in the spread of famine and the depletion of food and medical supplies, in a flagrant violation of the provisions of international humanitarian law, the Geneva Conventions, human rights principles, and in clear defiance of the international community. bootstrap slideshow Albudaiwi affirmed that the GCC holds the Israeli occupation authorities fully responsible for the ongoing humanitarian tragedy in the Gaza Strip, including the policy of collective starvation pursued by the occupation forces against our brothers in Gaza. "This constitutes a full-fledged war crime that requires urgent accountability from the international community," he stressed. Moreover, he called on the international community, including all its states, institutions, and organisations, to take immediate and serious action to stop this brutal siege, halt the machine of killing and starvation, ensure the entry of urgent humanitarian aid, open the crossings without delay, and save the lives of innocent people from a certain catastrophe. Additionally, the Secretary General of the GCC reiterated the firm stance of the GCC states in supporting the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people. 'Foremost among them is their right to a dignified life, freedom, and self-determination, and to achieve a just and lasting peace in accordance with international legitimacy resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiative,' he said. -- BERNAMA-QNA
