Egypt, UNDP discuss expanded cooperation on medical waste management, human development
Health Ministry Spokesperson Hossam Abdel Ghaffar stated that the minister welcomed Fracassetti and praised his contributions during his tenure in Cairo, reaffirming Egypt's commitment to strengthening collaboration with the UNDP.
The discussions focused on ongoing joint projects and future funding strategies, with special attention to the development of a medical waste management complex in Suez Governorate. The minister directed Anwar Ismail, his aide for national projects, to draw up a clear timeline for the infrastructure upgrade of the complex.
The two sides also explored potential areas for enhanced cooperation in human development, in line with Egypt's national priorities to build citizens' capabilities and improve the quality of healthcare services.
Minister Abdel Ghaffar underscored the importance of continued coordination in the lead-up to the Global Conference on Health, Population and Development, scheduled to be held in Cairo this November.
Fracassetti expressed appreciation for the longstanding partnership with Egypt and praised the country's efforts in advancing human development. He reiterated UNDP's commitment to supporting the health sector to deliver tangible improvements for Egyptian citizens.
The meeting was attended by senior officials from both sides, including Deputy Minister Abla El-Alfi, Rady Hammad, Head of Preventive Medicine, and Susan El-Zanaty, Director of International Health Relations. Representing UNDP were Deputy Resident Representative Gummar Deeb and Programme Manager Abdel Razek Abu El-Ala.

A new flagship Dh843 million hospital primed to transform patient care in Fujairah has been hailed as one of the country's most advanced healthcare projects. The 222-bed Sheikh Khalifa Hospital was inaugurated by Sheikh Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi, Ruler of Fujairah, and Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed, Vice President, Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the Presidential Court, on Tuesday. The Fujairah Ruler and Sheikh Mansour, accompanied by several officials, were given a tour of the hospital's extensive facilities, including centres of excellence, operating theatres, intensive care units, laboratories and inpatient wards. It features three dedicated medical centres of excellence, specialising in burns treatment, rehabilitation and trauma treatment, all equipped with cutting-edge technology to enhance services to patients. Sheikh Hamad stressed the importance of the new hospital in bolstering the emirate's health sector and enhancing the care delivered to patients. Sheikh Mansour said the hospital was one of the most important projects completed under the President's Initiatives programme. He said the hospital is central to a broader push to improve healthcare infrastructure across the Emirates. The hospital has high-tech features, including advanced imaging systems such as CT scans, MRI, and tomography, in addition to modern laboratories and specialised equipment for its three centres of excellence. It also has a modern emergency and trauma department with 30 beds, expandable to 60, and 55 outpatient clinics catering to diverse healthcare needs. Its rehabilitation centre features the latest therapeutic equipment, including speech therapy and audiometry, a hydrotherapy pool, two hyperbaric oxygen therapy rooms and advanced prosthetic support. The burns unit is comprises 10 patient rooms, five intensive care beds dedicated to burns, and an operating theatre equipped for such cases. The hospital also includes four royal suites, eight VIP suites, 45 beds across medical and surgical wings, 15 general intensive care beds and 10 cardiac ICU beds. The hospital is managed by The Medical Office (TMO) under PureHealth Group, which oversees the Sheikh Khalifa hospital network in the Northern Emirates, under the umbrella of the President's Initiatives and in co-ordination with the Presidential Court. It operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for emergency and inpatient services. Outpatient clinics receive patients from 8am to 5pm, Monday to Friday.

Dubai: 68-year-old expat undergoes complex 9-hour brain surgery for rare tumour
A 68-year-old British expat in Dubai has successfully undergone a rare and complex nine-hour brain surgery to remove a life-threatening tumour that had invaded deep parts of his brain. The patient, who wished to remain anonymous, was diagnosed with a 'butterfly glioma' — a rare and aggressive type of brain tumour that spreads across both hemispheres of the brain through the corpus callosum, the bundle of nerve fibres connecting the two sides. His health concerns began in April 2025, when he noticed weakness in his right leg and had trouble standing up. He also struggled to swallow and experienced involuntary shaking in his left arm, symptoms that worsened over the following weeks. Eventually, he became unable to walk or lift his right arm. Initially, doctors suspected a spinal issue after an X-ray and MRI showed signs of degeneration in his lower back. But as his symptoms progressed, further tests were done, and brain scans revealed a mass deep inside his brain. He was referred to Dr Gopalakrishnan CV, a consultant neurosurgeon at Medcare Orthopaedics & Spine Hospital, who led the high-risk surgical procedure. Using advanced neuronavigation technology, Dr Gopalakrishnan and his team accessed the tumour through a narrow passage in the frontal lobe. The tumour, located about three centimetres below the surface, was grayish and partly soft, but it had spread to critical areas including the right frontal lobe and the septum pellucidum, a delicate membrane near the brain's centre, which also had to be removed. Several damaged blood vessels and areas of dead tissue were also found. The tests also revealed that his pupils were equal and reactive to light, with full and conjugate eye movements. According to the doctor, the cranial nerve examination was normal, although the fundus could not be assessed. Doctors found that the patient had some weakness in his right arm, particularly when bending and straightening the elbow and when lifting the arm sideways. "His leg was more affected, he had very limited strength in bending his right knee and moderate weakness when trying to straighten it," said Dr Gopalkrishnan, adding that his reflexes were normal, his sense of touch was mostly unaffected, and there were no unusual muscle twitches. 'Treating butterfly gliomas is one of the greatest challenges in neurosurgery,' said Dr Gopalakrishnan. 'These tumours grow aggressively in deep parts of the brain and can change a person's personality and behaviour. Our aim is not just to extend life, but to preserve its quality. With precise surgery and cutting-edge treatments like Tumor Treating Fields and proton beam therapy, we're pushing the boundaries of what's possible.' Butterfly gliomas, or glioblastomas, are among the most aggressive brain tumours. They can cause severe symptoms like headaches, personality changes, seizures, and memory or movement problems. Standard treatment usually involves surgery, followed by radiation and chemotherapy. The average survival time after diagnosis is around 10 to 15 months, but outcomes depend on age, overall health, how much of the tumour can be removed, and certain genetic markers. New approaches such as immunotherapy and targeted treatments are offering fresh hope. Reflecting on his journey, the patient shared that getting this diagnosis was overwhelming at first. 'But I have found strength I didn't know I had. With the care and encouragement from my medical team and loved ones, I am staying hopeful and focusing on living each day with purpose and gratitude.'
