BAFFIN AND BRUCE TRAIL CONSERVANCY CELEBRATE COMPLETION OF TRAIL CONSERVANCY PROJECT

Cision Canada23-06-2025

ONE HUNDRED BOOT BRUSH STATIONS BUILT TO PROTECT AGAINST INVASIVE SPECIES
STONEY CREEK, ON, June 23, 2025 /CNW/ - Canadian footwear brand Baffin is proud to announce the successful completion of the Trail Conservancy Project in partnership with the Bruce Trail Conservancy. Launched in 2023 with the goal to build and install 100 co-branded boot brush stations by 2025, the project aimed to help stop the spread of invasive species on the Bruce Trail, Canada's oldest and longest marked footpath. The initiative reached its final chapter this Earth Day, when the final 40 stations were constructed at Baffin's Stoney Creek, Ontario headquarters by employees, community members and representatives from the Bruce Trail Conservancy.
Invasive species are one of the most pressing threats to the biodiversity of the Niagara Escarpment, often introduced unknowingly by hikers' footwear. Boot brush stations encourage trail users to clean their boots before and after their hikes, a simple act that has proven to significantly reduce the transfer of non-native species. When the Trail Conservancy Project launched in 2023 there were only 35 stations located throughout over 900 km of trail.
"At Baffin, we have always believed that adventure begins with your footwear, but it doesn't end there. As explorers, hikers, and nature loves, we know that every step we take leaves a mark. With the completion of the Trail Conservancy Project, we are proud to be leaving behind something meaningful on the Bruce Trail: not just footprints, but 100 boot brush stations," says Baffin's Brand Director, Jessica Liut. "This project demonstrates the power of community and the collective responsibility we all share in protecting and preserving natural spaces. We are honoured to support the Bruce Trail Conservancy and their work in safeguarding the trail, so that future generations can continue to explore, challenge themselves, and find peace in the same wild places we cherish today."
Over the past three years, Baffin employees have hand-built each station, donating time and energy to a cause close to home. The Hamilton-based brand is committed to Real-World Testing™, putting products to the test in a wide range of climates to ensure they deliver on quality and protection. From the harshest environments on Earth to the trails close to home, Baffin depends on the preservation of local landscapes and the vital work of organizations like the Bruce Trail Conservancy to help protect nature.
"The Bruce Trail Conservancy is thrilled with the results of our partnership with Baffin, a Canadian company that balances exploration with a desire to care for the natural world," says Michael McDonald, Chief Executive Officer of the Bruce Trail Conservancy. "With 100 boot brush stations now installed along the Bruce Trail, we are mitigating the spread of invasive species while educating the public on which species threaten the incredible biodiversity that makes the Bruce Trail such a special place to explore and preserve. With the continued support of dedicated Canadian conservation champions like Baffin, we are protecting our ribbon of wilderness, for everyone, forever, together."
Crafted from durable cedar and standing approximately three feet tall, each boot brush station features a rugged plastic scrubber base and an informative display panel. These displays educate hikers about the dangers of invasive species and promote trail-friendly habits. With a design rooted in purpose, the stations blend function and form to deliver real environmental impact. Turkstra Lumber, a family-owned Ontario business, played a crucial role by generously donating materials throughout the project's duration.
Baffin has proudly supported the Bruce Trail Conservancy for over a decade, contributing to conservation programming that protects, restores, and manages land along the Niagara Escarpment UNESCO World Biosphere. The completion of the Trail Conservancy Project marks a milestone in this partnership, but not the end to Baffin's commitment. As supporters of the wild spaces that inspire exploration and innovation, Baffin will continue to support the Bruce Trail Conservancy's ongoing efforts to preserve natural lands and ensure the trail remains a thriving biodiverse corridor.

Greenland has a message for the rest of the world: Come visit

NUUK, Greenland (AP) — Greenland has a message for the rest of the world: We're waiting for you. 'Come visit Greenland,' said Nukartaa Andreassen, who works for a water taxi company in the capital city, Nuuk. 'Learn about it, learn about us. We love to have you. We love to tell our stories and our culture.' The mineral-rich Arctic island is open for tourism. Whale-watching tours, excursions to the iconic puffin island and guided charters through remote settlements are just the beginning of what Greenland has to offer visitors. Locals want to show what makes the island unique beyond a recent diplomatic dustup with U.S. President Donald Trump. 'Our goal and mission is to present and be the ambassadors of Greenland,' said Casper Frank Møller, the chief executive of Nuuk-based tour guide company Raw Arctic, 'and to show what beauty you can experience while you're here.' The tourism industry is expected to see a boom this year following the launch of a new route between Nuuk and Newark, New Jersey. The inaugural flight June 14 was the first direct travel from the U.S. to Greenland by an American airline. Traveling to Greenland Before the direct flight, air passengers departing from the U.S. needed a layover in Iceland or Denmark to reach Greenland. The change benefited travelers like Doug Jenzen, an American tourist who was on the United Airlines plane from New Jersey. 'I came with the purpose of exploring some of the natural sites around the world's largest island, hoping to support things like ecotourism and sustainable travel while supporting the local economy,' Jenzen said. Cruise ships can already dock on the island but they bring less money to businesses catering to tourists because passengers sleep and usually eat on board. Some 150,000 tourists visited Greenland in 2024, according to Naaja Nathanielsen, Greenland's business minister. 'We really want to grow the tourism sector. It's a very good fit for many in Greenland,' Nathanielsen added. 'Tourism is about good vibes. It's about sharing culture, sharing history. It's about storytelling. And as Inuit, that's very much part of our heritage.' The Trump effect Greenland gained worldwide attention when Trump earlier this year announced he wanted to take control of the semiautonomous Danish territory, through a purchase or possibly by force. Denmark, a NATO ally, and Greenland have said the island is not for sale and condemned reports of the U.S. gathering intelligence there. Despite the diplomatic tension, Frank Møller of Raw Arctic sees an upside. 'It has kind of put Greenland on the world map. And it's definitely a situation that Raw Arctic has used to our advantage,' he said. Still, beefing up the tourism industry should happen at a pace that prioritizes the voices and comfort levels of the roughly 56,000 people on the island, he added. Andreassen, of Nuuk Water Taxi, agreed. 'It's very important for me to tell my own story. Because I always feel like when I meet new people, I always introduce a whole Greenland,' she said. 'It's important for me to show our own culture, our own nature. Not by television, not by other people from other countries.' 'Unforgettable moment' In June, Pinar Saatci, a 59-year-old Turkish tourist, saw several whales breach the ocean surface during a boat tour. 'It's very exciting to be here, at the other part of the world, so far away from home,' she said. 'It's a very exciting and unforgettable moment.' Risskov Rejser has visited Greenland several times through her travel company for Danish travelers. But she is worried about the impact of a tourist invasion. 'For me, the worst thing would be if mass tourism starts and people come here, and sort of look upon the Greenland people as if they were a living museum,' she said. 'It has to be done in a respectful way and you have to consider what the consequences are.' ___ Stefanie Dazio in Berlin contributed to this report.

Around one hundred Michelin-starred chefs and traditional cuisine chefs vindicate Catalonia as the region with the best gastronomy in the world

With 62 Michelin-starred restaurants and three establishments ranked among the best in the world, Catalonia aims to reinforce its leadership as a preeminent culinary destination in Europe and the world BARCELONA, Spain, July 1, 2025 /CNW/ -- Ferran Adrià, the Roca brothers, Carme Ruscalleda, Nandu Jubany, Cocina Hermanos Torres... This is the first time that all the representatives of Catalan cuisine have been portrayed together with a common goal: to make Catalonia known as home to the best gastronomy in the world. A campaign was launched to vindicate Catalonia's global leadership in the gastronomic world at an event held at the emblematic Palau de la Música Catalana in Barcelona, with more than one hundred chefs present, including those awarded Michelin stars and those producing traditional cuisine, as well as other prominent professionals in the sector – maitre Ds, sommeliers, producers, farmers, fishermen, winegrowers and restaurateurs. What began 30 years ago with the elBulli revolution, and chefs such as Carme Ruscalleda and Joan Roca, has now peaked: the region has one of the most internationally recognised cuisines, with 62 restaurants totalling 77 Michelin stars and three establishments ranked among the best in the world, according to The World's 50 Best Restaurants (Disfrutar, El Celler de Can Roca and elBulli). In addition, Catalan Albert Adrià was recognised as the second-best chef in the world in 2024, according to The Best Chef Awards. Catalonia also stands out as an agri-food powerhouse with 12 Protected Designations of Origin (PDO), 13 Protected Geographical Indications (PGI) and 12 Designations of Origin (DO) for wines. This global success is not only the result of a consolidated culinary tradition, but also of its strong link with the agri-food sector: an ecosystem that generates 20% of the GDP of the Catalan region and is driven by more than 573,500 professionals. The sector also invests over 85.7 million euros in R&D annually, positioning Catalonia as a reference point in agri-food and culinary innovation. Consolidating Catalonia as a food and wine destination Located in Spain, Catalonia is among the main tourist regions in the world, with visitors travelling to the region throughout the year and showing a great interest in the food and wine. This tourist profile spends 20% more on average than the conventional tourist. In this context, and with more than 500 food and wine experiences active throughout the territory, Catalonia wants to consolidate its leadership as a preeminent culinary destination in Europe and the world, and to attract new visitors by linking culinary culture to the productive economy and international appeal. With the slogan "Catalonia, the best gastronomy in the world," the campaign launched by the Catalan Tourism Agency (Generalitat de Catalunya), it projects Catalan cuisine as an engine of economic development, territorial cohesion and tourist appeal, within the framework of the distinction "Catalonia, World Region of Gastronomy 2025." In fact, it was the first European region to receive this distinction from the International Institute of Gastronomy, Culture, Arts and Tourism (IGCAT). There have been 140 actual protagonists from the gastronomic world participating in the centrepiece of the campaign ad, shot in seven representative locations of the Catalan region: the city of Barcelona, Peratallada and l'Escala (Costa Brava), Valls (Costa Dorada), the muscle farms of the Ebro Delta, the city of Lleida, La Vall de Boí (Pyrenees) and Penedès (Barcelona Landscapes).

Trip.com Group Pioneers a Greener, More Inclusive Global Travel Ecosystem in 2024 Sustainability Report

Group launches new full-scale carbon emissions data feature across transport modes Country Retreats Programme expands to more global destinations, driving rural development Championing greater inclusion in the workplace SINGAPORE, July 1, 2025 /CNW/ -- Group, a leading global travel service provider, has released its latest Sustainability Report. The report highlights the company's significant progress in sustainability, centred around its "Friendly Four" framework - Stakeholder-Friendly, Community-Friendly, Family-Friendly, and Environmentally-Friendly. It captures key highlights of the Group's efforts to advance a more sustainable and inclusive future through innovation, collaboration, and responsible growth. Comprehensive carbon emissions data launched across transport and accommodation modes As part of its commitment to making sustainable travel accessible, Group has launched a new feature that offers quantified carbon emissions data across all major transportation services - including flights, car rentals, airport transfers, and trains (European trains). With the support of the Association of Car Rental Industry System Standards (ACRISS), users can now view tailpipe CO₂ emission data for car rental listings and compare the emissions of electric, hybrid, and traditional vehicles. A similar informative function for airport transfers further empowers travellers to be informed with greener mobility choices across every leg of their journey. The Group's wider environmental efforts continue to scale. In 2024 alone, the Group has encouraged travellers to place over 100 million orders on more sustainable travel products. Solar panel installations at the Group's headquarters and rural retreats generated 457 MWh of clean electricity, offsetting more than 245 tons of CO₂ emissions. Additionally, Group increased its use of green electricity in leased data centres to 42.6%, underscoring its commitment to long-term decarbonisation and its 2050 carbon neutrality goal. Additionally, for the first time, the Group's report includes all categories from Scope 3 carbon emissions - covering sources such as leased data centres and business travel, to support more comprehensive tracking and target-setting in line with group's carbon neutrality target by 2050. Country Retreat Programme expands to more global destinations Group continued to make meaningful contributions to rural development and public safety through tourism. Its flagship Country Retreat Programme expanded to 34 sites, generating more than 40,000 indirect job opportunities. Over 80% of employees at these retreats are local residents, and participating villages reported an average rise in per capita income of USD 5,500. This year, the programme will expand to more global destinations. Additional childcare leave days, subsidies, and gender equity anchor Group's family-first culture Group has also strengthened its position as a leading family-friendly workplace. Women now account for 57.1% of its global workforce, with representation at senior and middle management levels reaching 32.7% and 43% respectively, and over 61.2% at entry-levels. The Group's hybrid work programme, launched in 2022, has been used over 630,000 times by employees, saving an estimated 1.25 million commuting hours and enhancing work-life flexibility. As part of its efforts to support families, the Group also provided an additional three days of childcare leave starting April this year to help working parents better balance personal and professional responsibilities. In addition, the group has enhanced its benefits for female employees seeking assisted reproductive medical services. Apart from egg freezing, eligible staff can receive a higher amount of subsidy of up to $20,900 USD for in vitro fertilisation. Meanwhile, the childcare subsidy programme, introduced in 2023, has provided cash bonuses for more than 900 children, with over USD 468,000 distributed in 2024 alone. Strong rating reinforces Group's governance focus Group continued to raise the bar in corporate governance, earning an A rating from MSCI ESG. Globally, the Group hosted two partner summits and deepened collaboration with more than 230 destination marketing organisations to drive inclusive tourism development. Ms Jane Sun, CEO of Group, said, " The ability to operate and grow more sustainably will be among the most critical factors for future competitiveness. We believe that sustainable development is a long-term journey requiring deep and enduring commitment. Together with our users, partners, and employees, we are working to build a future where every journey brings us closer - to one another, and to the perfect trip for a better world."
