‘Very nice of him': Khairy non-committal on Umno return despite Dr Akmal's olive branch to suspended leaders
Free Malaysia Today reported that the former Umno leader acknowledged the gesture but remained non-committal about rejoining.
'That's very nice of him,' he reportedly said.
'I'm thankful for his comments and support, and I'll certainly consider it.'
Yesterday, Dr Akmal reportedly said he was ready to act as a bridge to bring back suspended leaders Khairy Jamaluddin, Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein and Shahril Hamdan into the party.
He said his only goal was to ensure Umno remained strong as a family.
Dr Akmal also urged suspended or sacked former Umno leaders to set aside their egos if they still care for the party.
He also said that Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had expressed his willingness to accept appeal letters from those affected by disciplinary actions.
In January 2023, Umno announced that former Youth chief Khairy was sacked from the party along with former Selangor chapter chief Tan Sri Noh Omar, citing breaches of party discipline.
In addition, former vice-president Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein and former information chief Shahril Sufian Hamdan were suspended for six years, along with Datuk Maulizan Bujang and Datuk Seri Mohd Salim Sharif.

RIO DE JANEIRO, July 7 — Malaysia fully supports a comprehensive reform of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. According to him, there is a need to breathe new life into the organisation so it can better navigate issues such as artificial intelligence, digital trade, and climate policy in the future. '(This should be done) without restricting the fair policy space of developing countries,' he said after meeting with WTO Director-General Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala here today (Monday in Malaysia). The meeting in Brazil's second-largest city was held to discuss the organisation's role in addressing current global trade challenges. 'I reaffirmed Malaysia's commitment to multilateralism and the need for the WTO to remain inclusive, effective, and responsive,' he added. Anwar and Okonjo-Iweala are in Rio de Janeiro to attend the 17th Brics Leaders' Summit. Okonjo-Iweala is a Nigerian economist who has served as the WTO Director-General since March 2021. She is the first woman and first African to lead the WTO as Director-General. Citing VK Lingam and 1988 crisis, PKR lawmakers want RCI to end rumours of interference in Malaysia's top courts
PUCHONG, July 7 — Pandan MP Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli and eight other PKR MPs today called for a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) to investigate allegations of improper judicial appointments and interference in the judiciary. The MPs said the inquiry was crucial to address the allegations and prevent a repeat of the damage inflicted on public trust from the 2007 VK Lingam tape scandal and the 1988 constitutional crisis. Rafizi said an RCI is the best way to quell public speculation that was arising reasonably from circumstances such as the vacancies and successions within the judiciary. 'We can't stop the public from speculating. Speculation is not good; that's why the best way to do this is to have an RCI. Let the learned members of the RCI go through this; they will be able to ascertain what has transpired and present it to the public,' he said at a press conference at the Subang parliamentary service centre here. 'If that is done, it will affirm the government's commitment to defend judicial independence, and it will nip the problem and speculation in the bud.' Rafizi emphasised, however, that the call for an RCI was not an act against the current administration, adding that all nine PKR MPs continue to support the federal government and the ruling coalition. Diplomatic delegations arrive in KL for Asean Foreign Ministers' Meeting under Malaysia's 2025 chairmanship
SEPANG, July 7 — Diplomatic delegations have begun arriving in Kuala Lumpur ahead of the 58th Asean Foreign Ministers' Meeting (AMM) and related meetings, which will be held from July 8 to 11. Among the early arrivals was Laos Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Phongsavanh Sisoulath, who landed at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) at 8.05pm on Sunday. Myanmar Ministry of Foreign Affairs representative Kyaw Nyun Oo and Permanent Secretary of Foreign Affairs of Thailand Eksiri Pintaruchi were also among those who arrived. Senior officials from several Asean countries, including the Philippines, Vietnam, Brunei and Indonesia, also touched down on Sunday. The 58th AMM and related meetings, to be held under Malaysia's 2025 Asean Chairmanship themed 'Inclusivity and Sustainability,' will feature 24 ministerial-level meetings, including sessions with Asean Dialogue Partners and Sectoral Dialogue Partners. The event is expected to gather about 1,500 delegates, including foreign ministers from Asean member states, Timor-Leste, Asean Dialogue Partners, Asean Regional Forum (ARF) participating countries, Sectoral Dialogue Partners and senior officials from the Asean Secretariat. Malaysia is hosting the AMM as part of its fifth Asean Chairmanship, having previously held the role in 1977, 1997, 2005 and 2015. — Bernama
