As interest in Ontario wines grows, these restaurants are taking notice: Jasmine Mangalaseril

With more people making an effort to get Canadian products on our plates, it makes sense to also think about what's in our wine glasses.
Meg Alford, owner of Guelph's Two Faces natural wine bar, said there's been an uptick in interest in Ontario-made wines since the U.S. government threatened and implemented tariffs against Canada.
"It's like night and day," she said. "But after the tariffs were put in, I would say so many people are asking [about Ontario wines]."
Ontario-made wines: Older than Canada
In 1866, Canada's first commercial winery, Vin Villa, was established on Pelee Island, with a 12-hectare vineyard of North American Catawba grapes.
Today, Ontario grows more than 7,000 hectares of grapes.
The Vintners Quality Alliance (VQA) recognizes some traditional European grape varietals (Vitis vinifera), and some European-North American hybrids.
And while they granted appellations (or a geographic designation) to Niagara Peninsula, Lake Erie North Shore and Prince Edward County, some winemakers seek out non-VQA varietals, harvested elsewhere in the province.
"I'm particularly interested in grapes that have genetics to this area. They also have built-in disease resistance and are able to flourish in our climate a lot better because their genetics are from here." said Drea Scotland of Drinks Farm, who has a young vineyard in Demorestville, Ontario.
"I also think those wines are delicious."
Virtual wineries
Until Scotland's vines can be harvested, she follows the French négociant tradition. Her grapes are sourced from areas including Georgian Bay, northern Ontario, and eastern Ontario and she works in a shared wine-making facility.
"You can do sustainable growing with vinifera in some places," said Scotland. "But, to me, the future of wine making in Ontario is leaning more in the hybrid direction. It would also open up the province to having way more wine regions."
Wes Klassen, sommelier and co-owner of Kitchener's Odd Duck Wine and Provisions, focuses solely on offerings from virtual wineries.
"There is no brick-and-mortar building. They are not available at the LCBO," said Klassen. "They [have a] tiny, tiny, tiny, tiny amount of production. It's this really cool co-operative community of growers that are making outstanding wines."
It's a more affordable wine-making model that gives wine makers flexibility in sourcing grapes and creative freedom in blending and trying different techniques.
Sourcing your next sip
Klassen said it's important to find a wine or hospitality professional who can showcase wines for their strengths, versus comparing them to wines from other regions.
"I think a lot of people want Ontario's version of a Cali Cab. They want us to be something that we're not," said Klassen. "I think we're kind of slapping ourselves in the face and doing a disservice to what we actually do here."
In Guelph, Alford finds her guests pleasantly surprised to learn what they're sipping was made a few hours away.
"I've had Drea's rosé on by the glass for a couple months now. Only recently were people asking, 'Where is this from?' And I'm like, 'Ontario. Right here.'"
A person might be able to purchase a bottle at the bar's or restaurant's bottle shop. If not, many producers do direct-to-consumer sales or list bottle shops they work with.

"Everything's done in a low intervention style. Something that really is fun is her Supersonic, which is made from 100 per cent Concord grapes," said Wes Klassen.

VANCOUVER – British Columbia's independent wood product makers say hundreds of small- and medium-sized manufacturers may be forced to shut down in light of the latest decision from the United States to raise anti-dumping duties on Canadian softwood. The province's Independent Wood Processors Association says in a release that the U.S. Commerce Department's decision this week to raise duties also includes a requirement for Canadian companies to retroactively remit duties for products shipped to the United States since Jan.1, 2023. Association chair Andy Rielly says in a statement that the requirement to pay duties on products shipped in the last 31 months could not only force small B.C. producers to shut down, but may also threaten operators' personal assets as they may have to risk using their homes as collateral to secure bonds to pay. Rielly is urging the Canadian government to create support programs to make sure B.C.'s independent wood processors can keep workers employed and their companies running. The U.S. Commerce Department said earlier in the week it will raise anti-dumping duties on Canadian softwood to 20.56 per cent, drawing the ire of several B.C. industry groups such as the B.C. Council of Forest Industries and the B.C. Lumber Trade Council. The Independent Wood Processors Association says the the 'all-others' rate affecting its members will be raised from 14.4 per cent to 27.3 per cent, with the possibly of another increase 'in the coming weeks' potentially pushing the duties for their products to as high as 35 per cent. 'Until the Canadian government can negotiate a settlement to this long-festering dispute, we need a government support program to keep our workers employed,' Rielly says, adding an overall duty of 35-per-cent would force members to pay retroactive duties of 27 per cent on products already shipped. Association executive director Brian Menzies describes independent wood product producers as 'collateral damage' in the trade war, and says the only hope they have of avoiding the hit is either 'a favourable appeal from the Canada-US-Mexico Agreement' or 'pursuing a bilateral negotiated resolution.' 'We should not face export taxes or quotas,' Menzies says. 'Our raw materials are not subsidized, and we are too small to 'dump' our products in the U.S. market. 'We acquire logs and lumber at 'arm's length' from various suppliers on the open market, just like claims made by members of the U.S. Lumber Coalition, and yet our Canadian companies along with U.S. consumers must pay these unfair and costly duties.' The latest forecast for the housing market from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), particularly for Ontario, is a dour one — but Windsor-Essex seems to be somewhat of an outlier. On Thursday, the CMHC released its 2025 Housing Market Outlook summer update forecasting price drops of 2 per cent across the country and expecting even larger drops in Ontario and B.C. 'Vancouver and Toronto seem to always skew some of our statistics,' said Julianna Biondo, president of the Windsor-Essex County Association of Realtors (WECAR). 'I'm not saying that Windsor is immune to any of that for sure but, definitely we're a little bit more unique and niche in our market.' The report points to its new scenario based on Canada-U.S. trade tariff information as of June 26 and predicts tariffs will peak in the second half of the year. That will continue to impact the Canadian economy, producing a mild recession, and contributing to three key factors leading to the housing market slowdown: price pressures, lower demand, and uncertainty. 'I haven't experienced any get out of dodge, you know, everybody [saying] 'Oh, my gosh the sky is falling' I haven't experienced that. But I think there is some hesitancy,' said Biondo. 'We do have a drop in sales for sure.' Windsor is taking the brunt of the trade war, evidenced by Statistics Canada's June jobs report putting the city firmly at the top of the unemployment pile with a jobless rate of 11.2 per cent. But it seems the real estate market in Windsor-Essex is proving resilient — at least in the more competitive sub-$600,000 price bracket where most homes are bought and sold. 'Buyers are just being a little bit more choosy,' said Biondo. 'They're being a little bit more particular and they're getting the opportunity to get their conditions met, which is wonderful. And that is a key element to having a stable environment for a market.' WECAR's June report showed an increase in the average sale price of 2.97 per cent even as home sales dipped again 5.23 per cent and new listings climbed by 11.86 per cent. The CMHC forecast indicates an expected recovery in 2026, even as unemployment is expected to continue to climb come the fall of 2025 and inflation is predicted to crest 3 per cent by mid-2026 due to the trade environment and connected geopolitical events. Come next year, Biondo expects that will mean steadier price increases in the Windsor-Essex market as the broader real estate landscape recovers from a tariff-induced downturn. 'We're still very much in a seller's market in this area,' said Biondo of the sub-$600,000 category. 'Let's let this trade war play out. Everybody knows that this will come to terms at some point.' The other drag on the market, according to the report, is the sluggish home construction much of the country is seeing, particularly in Ontario and British Columbia, where starts are predicted to see even further declines. In those provinces, CMHC points to high housing prices, rising construction costs, and lower investor confidence as factors weighing down the sector with some developers delaying or cancelling projects and missing presale targets as unsold inventory rises — all challenges expected to persist for the rest of 2025.
