If You Want To Get To Know Your Grandkids Better, Ask Them These 50 Eye-Opening Questions

Yahoo02-07-2025
There's something special about the connection between a grandparent and a grandchild. While this bond goes deeper than words, conversation is a great way to get to know your grandkid and help keep that connection strong.
But getting a conversation started, or keeping one going, isn't always easy. Maybe your grandchild is on the shy side, you haven't seen one another in a while or you're connecting on a video call instead of in person.
A juicy question — the kind that leads them to see something in a new light, or inspires them to tell a story — can get a conversation started, or get it rolling again if you hit a lull.
'The point of asking questions should be to get to know your grandchildren better,' DeeDee Moore, a grandmother who blogs at More Than Grand, told HuffPost.
Asking kids to elaborate with follow-up questions and open-ended prompts like 'What makes you say that?' are also a good way to keep kids talking.
'If you ask what their favorite color is, ask why they like it or how that color makes them feel,' Moore suggested.
Part of the joy of asking kids questions is the surprise that their answers may bring, leading your conversation to take an unexpected turn.
'When I asked my four-year-old granddaughter if she had talked to any of her friends at school today, she initially said no,' Moore recounted. 'But then she explained, 'I just meowed because I was a kitty.' Instead of finding out more about her school day, we ended up having a conversation about how animals talk.'
Here are some questions you can use to start a conversation with a grandkid or to keep one going.
What's something you're really good at? 'A great follow up is to ask them to teach you how to do it,' Moore added.
If you could invite anyone in the whole world to dinner, who would you invite?
If you could walk into any book or movie, which one would you choose?
If you could be any animal, which one would you be?
Would you rather be able to fly like a bird or swim like a fish?
If you were a superhero, what would your superpower be?
Would you rather be able to tell the future or read other people's minds?
What was the last thing that happened that made you laugh?
What is something kind that someone has done for you?
What is something about you that I don't already know?
What do you think you'll be doing ten years from now?
Where in the world would you most like to visit?
Would you rather travel back to the past or into the future?
What is something you want to learn how to do?
What is your favorite thing about yourself?
Would you rather travel underwater or in outer space?
If your toy could talk, what would it say?
What is your favorite time of the year?
What is something about you that is unique?
What kind of mom or dad do you think you would be?
What do you think your pet is thinking right now?
What would you do with a thousand dollars?
What would you like to be famous for?
What makes somebody a good friend?
Would you rather be tiny like an insect or as tall as a giraffe?
What do you think is the best smell on earth?
What was the last dream that you remember?
When you get bored in school, what do you start thinking about?
Would you rather be the star of a movie, or the director?
What is a job that you wouldn't want to do?
Do you think it's ever a good idea to tell a lie?
How do you show someone that you love them?
What was your favorite part of the day?
Who is your favorite person right now?
Would you want to live forever?
What would a perfect day look like for you?
Would you rather have a pet dragon or a pet unicorn?
If you could have any kind of store, what would you want to sell?
What is the silliest thing you've ever done?
What do you think is the most important rule for people to follow?
Would you rather dance or paint what you are feeling?
If you had to eat the same thing for every meal, what food would you choose?
What is the weirdest thing you've ever tasted?
How can you tell if somebody is smart?
What is something brave that you have done?
If you wrote a book, what would the title be?
If you could change one thing about the world, what would it be?
What is something that used to scare you but doesn't anymore?
How do you think the world will be different by the time you are a grown up?
What is something you've done that you would like to do again?
More important that the question that gets them talking is how well you listen once you get them started.
'Listening carefully to your grandchildren is the greatest gift you can give them,' Moore said. Remembering details like their friends' names shows that you're paying attention and that you care.
'It builds a true connection when you show that you are interested in their lives.'
And while there are advantages to having a conversation face-to-face, like being able to read someone's body language or decipher their tone, you don't have to be physically present with your grandchild to make a connection.
Moore explained: 'Showing a curiosity for who they are can be done just as easily over video chat or in a letter as it can be over ice cream.'This article originally appeared on HuffPost.

Paris Jackson 'concerned' about Michael Jackson estate payments

Michael Jackson's daughter Paris Jackson is "concerned" about payments being made by her father's estate. The 27-year-old singer has objected to a request for court approval of the estate executors' "premium payments" to three law firms in her position as a beneficiary of the Thriller hitmaker's estate. In documents filed on 24 June and obtained by People magazine, Paris is expressed her concern over an alleged "practice of granting so-called 'premium payments' for unrecorded attorney time, much less paying one-hundred percent of any such extraordinary amounts." The paperwork named a six-month period in 2018 when executors requested approval for $625,000 in payments for "uncaptured time" without explaining "as to why counsel was incapable of recording unbilled time, or why such a failure should not preclude payment." Two of the firms had received their prospective payments, in breach of the "Court's order allowing only partial payment of attorneys' fees until Court approval is obtained." The documents added: "Even worse, these payments appear, at least in part, to consist of lavish gratuities bestowed upon already well-compensated counsel. "[The payments] raise serious and substantial questions about Executors' ability to effectively supervise counsel, by, at minimum, requiring that counsel record their time in a manner susceptible to at least superficial review and oversight, namely by means of task-billed time entries, and refraining from wasteful, six-figure gift-giving to themselves and their colleagues." Paris is also said to be "concerned" about the executors' alleged "gross lack of diligence in seeking the required Court approval for extraordinary fees and costs" for the 2018 payments and lack of explanation about the delays. Paris' attorney, Craig Peters, claimed there was "no written agreement" authorising executors to seek approval for fees in six-month increments and requested a "schedule for all of the outstanding approvals, both the accountings and the legal fees." Lawyers for the estate insisted nothing untoward had happened. Jonathan Steinsapir told People: "The Executors' approval of payments to attorneys have been made with the same business judgment that has earned this Estate over $3 billion. "We are confident that the objected-to payments are appropriate as, indeed, they are fully consistent with payments made in the decade prior, all of which have been approved by the Probate Court." Insiders explained the "premium payments" are connected to the sale of Michael's stake in EMI to Sony. A source said: "They are objecting to relatively minor bonuses to three firms for work on the EMI catalogue sale in 2018. "The estate, assisted by these lawyers and others, bought a 10% stake in EMI for $50,000 in 2012 due to a contractual right we had with Sony. "In 2018, the stake sold for almost $300 million! Any business in this position would reward those who worked on that matter through the years. "They also claim that the estate had to withhold 30 percent of all fees pending court approval. On that, they are simply mistaken and do not understand the court's orders. The estate has paid bonuses like this to attorneys for years and they've all been approved without any objections." At the time of his death in 2009, Michael - whose sons Prince and Bigi are also beneficiaries of his estate - was over $500 million in debt to more than 65 creditors. A hearing regarding the matter is scheduled for July 16.

"This feels like a video game, like somebody set it up" - Deandre Ayton on teaming up with Luka Doncic in LA

"This feels like a video game, like somebody set it up" - Deandre Ayton on teaming up with Luka Doncic in LA originally appeared on Basketball Network. The 2018 draft class has the potential to become one of the greatest in NBA history. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander recently won an NBA championship, the scoring title and MVP awards for the regular season, Western Conference finals and NBA Finals. Advertisement Luka Doncic earned the scoring title and the Western Conference finals MVP award in the previous season. Jaren Jackson Jr. took home the DPOY award, Trae Young led the league in assists last season and Michael Porter Jr. added an NBA championship to his resume. Interestingly, none of these stars were the first overall pick in the draft — that honor went to Deandre Ayton. While Ayton hasn't exactly underperformed, having been a key piece in the Phoenix Suns' run to the NBA Finals, he hasn't fully lived up to the expectations of being the first overall selection. For years, debates raged between Luka and Trae over who was the best player in the class, only for Shai to quietly take the throne after his performance last campaign. Doncic, still widely regarded as the most talented player from that class, was recently traded from the Dallas Mavericks to the Los Angeles Lakers in a shocking turn of events. This season, he's on a mission to prove he can lead a team to a championship — and joining him on that quest is his new running mate in the City of Angels, Ayton. Advertisement "This feels like a video game. Like somebody set it up," the newest Purple and Gold acquisition said. "But honestly, this is an opportunity that I won't take for granted. Luka is a once-in-a-generation player, and I'm happy to be his teammate. "Hearing about the kind of shape he's been in, he's super ripped, and I'm finally glad to be on his side when he's doing all of that. And I'm just truly excited. I'm a student of the game, and I love to play with a passion. And the love I have received, and I've not even thrown on a jersey, I can only show you guys my appreciation," he added. Ayton doesn't fit Doncic's mold exactly Doncic prefers rim-running centers who are vertical lob threats at the basket and make perfect pick-and-roll partners, much like Dwight Powell and Daniel Gafford were for him in Dallas. Ayton doesn't fit this mold exactly. His game offers a wider range of offensive options beyond just setting screens and catching lobs. Although he certainly has the basketball IQ to adjust his game to complement Doncic's style. Advertisement However, the real concern lies on the defensive end. Neither LeBron James nor Luka Magic is known for their defensive prowess, and Ayton hasn't built that reputation either. In fact, when Ayton first entered the league, his draft profile pointed out: "Ayton's shot-block rate (2.3%) was considered low for a player of his size. He lacked consistent effort and awareness on rotations and often got caught ball-watching. He struggled guarding in space and wasn't quick to read and react to screen actions — considered a liability in defending modern spread offenses." Scouts were right — Ayton hasn't yet stood out as a defensive factor in his career. This could be a worrying weakness for the Lakers' frontcourt. Opinions on the trade are divided league-wide, and Kendrick Perkins sent Ayton a clear message that this might be his last real chance to prove his worth in the Association. "You got your hands full," Perkins said. "So, this should be a moment where you go in and check yourself and say, you know what? I'm about to lock in. People need to see that you're committed to doing the little things, right? You got a tough Western Conference." Advertisement Related: Rick Fox explains why Kobe never hung out with other teammates: "He was on a course and any minute or day wasted doing something else was going to slow him down getting to that point" Lakers fans may worry Given Ayton's career so far, Lakers fans may worry whether he has the mentality and effort level to improve defensively or if he'll continue to be caught "sleeping" on that end of the court. Offensively, this team has incredible potential, but when facing dominant centers in the playoffs — Nikola Jokic, Victor Wembanyama, Alperen Sengun, Anthony Davis, Chet Holmgren — the Lakers could quickly find themselves in trouble. Advertisement There have been plenty of examples throughout league history of teams with incredible offensive potential who ultimately fell short of going all the way despite impressive stats. James is also ain't getting any younger, while the pressure on Doncic to win a title grows with each passing season. While this team might resemble something out of a video game, defense could end up being the deciding factor in how the story unfolds. That's just more hoopin'" This story was originally reported by Basketball Network on Jul 9, 2025, where it first appeared.

General Hospital Recap: Trina Throws Kai Out

General Hospital Recap: Trina Throws Kai Out originally appeared on Daytime Confidential. Alone with Emma, Anna points out Vaughn's at least ten years older than her, but she feels she can date whoever she wants. Anna wonders if Emma is just using Vaughn to get into the PCU lab. When Vaughn returns, Anna orders him to sit and talk, but Josslyn shows up, hot under the collar. Josslyn and Emma get into it over Vaughn until Anna puts a stop to it. Josslyn gives Vaughn a fake ultimatum, either her or Emma. Vaughn apologizes to Emma for using her, saying he and Josslyn are together. Vaughn tells Josslyn they can't move forward if Anna is on to him and they need to sell their relationship. The two share a kiss while Anna and Emma look on in disgust. Kai tells Trina everything that went down in Curtis' office, including how Drew paid Jacinda to disappear. He admits he was the one who told Drew what Curtis was planning. Trina gets angry with Kai who defends Drew. She says she doesn't trust him anymore and accuses him of betraying her family. Kai says he couldn't sit back and let someone be destroyed for something they didn't do. Trina says she will always pick family first and he's not part of that. Kai says he loves her, but she yells at him to get out. Portia chastises Curtis for not going to the gallery exhibit and supporting Trina, but he says he was dealing with Drew's blackmail again. Curtis tells her Drew paid Jacinda to disappear, and Kai told Drew about their plan. Portia is upset for Trina's sake and Curtis is worried how she'll react to finding out Kai betrayed them. Curtis brings up the blackmail again and admits he's not saving her but only Trina. Portia is hurt and storms out. Portia joins Isaiah at the bar and complains about Jordan and the possible end of her marriage. He says she's a wonderful woman and if Curtis can't see that, then he's the problem. The two continue to drink together and get flirty. Lulu complains to Laura about Brook Lynn and says, thanks to her, Rocco knows about Britt. Lulu says Brook Lynn did it to hurt her to cause maximum damage. Laura asks what Rocco needs, and Lulu says he needs to understand she and Dante are his parents and love him. Lulu feels Rocco is pulling away. Laura says it's normal and Rocco may have questions, but he ultimately knows how much Lulu loves him. Laura talks to Rocco, who is still upset about him not being born if Britt hadn't stolen the embryo. He feels his parents didn't chose to have him. Laura reassures him that he was wanted, and they fought for him. Laura says he is their miracle and needs to remember that. Tracy tells Chase there are issues with Brook Lynn, but he tells her not to bring him into whatever issues she's having with her granddaughter. Tracy says Brook Lynn holds Lulu responsible for the problems with Gio and is going after her. Tracy wonders if Chase believes Brook Lynn is justified. Chase says Lulu crossed a line so Tracy questions whether he'll help Brook Lynn punish her. Chase is certain Brook Lynn doesn't have anything nefarious planned. Tracy says nothing good will come from the two women destroying each other and asks Chase to help stop it. Chase says he loves Brook Lynn and there is nothing she could do that would drive him away. Michael finds Brook Lynn crying and she says things have actually gotten worse with Gio. Dante arrives on the warpath against her, saying she's dropped to a new low. Michael tries to defend Brook Lynn but Dante's not having it. He accuses Brook Lynn of deliberately leaving the file for Rocco to find. Brook Lynn swears she didn't deliberately leave the file for Rocco to find. Dante angrily says she did it to hurt Lulu and that it has to stop. Michael steps in again to defend Brook Lynn which she appreciates. After Michael leaves, Brook Lynn swears she regrets hurting Rocco. She says she was angry and wanted to hurt Lulu but didn't mean for Rocco to see the file. She apologizes which he accepts. Dante says he knows she gave up Gio out of love and is certain he'll come to understand that. Curtis meets with Michael to let him know about the article on Sonny possibly killing Natalia. Michael realizes Drew is behind everything and Curtis says he doesn't have any more moves to stop him. Michael tells Curtis to do what he has to do to protect his family. Laura reassures Lulu that Rocco will be fine, while Rocco is writing an email to Liesl after finding her online. (*Was Rocco dropped once too often on his head as a baby? Does he not understand how surrogacy works and Liesl isn't and never was his grandmother? I feel like he's old enough to understand and not be this stupid*) Keep checking back for the latest General Hospital recaps!
