
Who gets housing, and who is ‘disposable'?
Kara Thompson, an EKG technician at an Atlanta hospital, was pushed into crisis after complaining about the broken water heater in her two-bedroom rental. After a month of struggling to keep herself and her four young children clean without hot water, she threatened to withhold rent until her landlord fixed the problem. But landlord-friendly Georgia didn't require property owners to guarantee habitability or forbid them from 'retaliatory evictions.' Soon Kara, too, would have an eviction on her record that made it next to impossible to rent another apartment.
The Walkers and the Thompsons — both families led by single Black working mothers — quickly found themselves in a downward spiral of housing precarity, one step away from sleeping on the street. The Walkers spent 18 months in a room at an extended-stay hotel that cost more per month than their burned-down house, before falling one rung further down, to a dilapidated rooming house. The Thompsons regularly slept in Kara's Toyota Avalon when they couldn't afford even the cheapest hotel rooms.
Despite their lack of stable housing, neither the Walkers nor the Thompsons would be considered officially homeless under the federal government's current definition. Only people living on the street or in shelters fall into this narrow category. Research suggests that the total population of people experiencing homelessness in the United States — including people living in cars or hotel rooms, or doubled-up with friends or family — is several times larger than the official figure, which was 770,000 in 2024.
'There Is No Place for Us: Working and Homeless in America,' by journalist and anthropologist Brian Goldstone, shines a light on what the author calls the 'shadow realm' of working people who are not considered officially homeless but lack a fixed place to sleep at night. As Goldstone writes, in the popular imagination homelessness is linked to 'individual pathology' — primarily mental illness and substance use disorders, but also 'laziness' or an unwillingness to hold down a job. Americans cling to the idea that if we work hard enough, not only will we avoid homelessness, but we will one day become homeowners. Indeed, the myth of the American Dream depends on a decoupling of homelessness and employment. But Goldstone exposes how working families like the Walkers and the Thompsons, 'besieged by a combination of skyrocketing rents, low wages, and inadequate tenant protections … are becoming the new face of homelessness in the United States.'
The five Atlanta-area families he follows sleep in their cars, on the floors and couches of relatives' and friends' crowded apartments, or in exorbitantly priced extended-stay hotels and rooming houses riddled with vermin and mold. They tell themselves that these arrangements are temporary, but with their eviction records and bad credit scores — as well as low wages that don't keep up with rents in a rapidly gentrifying Atlanta — true housing security is beyond their reach. By compassionately telling these families' stories and excavating the systemic forces behind their housing insecurity, 'There Is No Place for Us' shifts the paradigm on homelessness, revealing how America's disinvestment in public housing and relentless pursuit of free-market growth has come at the terrible expense of poor working families.
To report 'There Is No Place for Us,' Goldstone drew on his background in anthropology, spending more than two years immersed in the lives of five families. He observed them in their hotel rooms and the apartments they managed to rent for stretches of time. He accompanied them to work, family gatherings and visits to the Gateway Center, the 'coordinated entry' hub for accessing the woefully limited assistance that public agencies and nonprofits are able to offer to homeless people in Atlanta. Goldstone stitches together a textured and extraordinarily detailed narrative of each family's multiyear struggle to keep a roof over their heads. The effect is reminiscent of 'Random Family' (2003), Adrian Nicole LeBlanc's much-acclaimed portrait of life in a poor neighborhood in the Bronx overtaken by the drug trade.
Like the Walkers and the Thompsons — and 93 percent of homeless families in Atlanta — the three other families Goldstone profiles are Black. The adults range in age from their early 20s to their mid-40s, and are all low-wage workers; they support children ranging from infancy to teenage years. Three of the families have deep roots in Atlanta, a city that was 67 percent Black in the early 1990s and is now 47 percent Black.
As Goldstone recounts each family's trials, he seamlessly weaves in explanations of the systemic reasons behind them. He explains, for instance, how Britt Wilkinson, born and raised in Atlanta, faces a far more difficult housing market than the one her family knew for decades. Wilkinson, a mother of two who works in food service, spent the early years of her 1990s childhood in the East Lake Meadows public housing complex, where five generations of her family lived. By the end of that decade, the complex was demolished to make way for the redevelopment of an adjacent golf course. Housing has been an issue for Wilkinson and her mother ever since.
As Goldstone explains, this family was experiencing the consequences of the end of the federal government's relatively brief experiment in subsidizing low-income housing at scale. Complexes that had been erected in the New Deal era to provide affordable housing for White working-class people had, by the 1970s, become majority-Black and highly stigmatized. The federal government began to cut funding, leading to the deterioration of complexes and eventually their demolition. 'The federal government had created the very conditions that were later pointed to as evidence of the 'failure' of public housing,' Goldstone writes.
In place of publicly owned housing projects came the Housing Choice Voucher Program, popularly known as Section 8, which left housing for the poor up to private landlords. As Wilkinson found when she was miraculously selected for a voucher after years of waiting, they are increasingly difficult to use in Atlanta, where gentrification has pushed up rental prices. Since Wilkinson's childhood, Atlanta has successfully employed tax incentives and other public subsidies to spur private investment and development. This 'engineered renewal,' Goldstone explains, has displaced lower-income Atlantans farther and farther from the city's core, which is now studded with luxury housing units that make up 94 percent of the new apartments built in the city over the past decade. Wilkinson's much-awaited Section 8 voucher expired before she could find a landlord who would accept it, and her family was back to couch-hopping.
Throughout 'There Is No Place for Us,' Goldstone makes clear that the Reagan era's 'neoliberal revolution — marked by large-scale privatization, massive tax cuts for the wealthy, and major reductions in social spending' — laid the groundwork for the conditions that push families like Wilkinson's into homelessness. Predatory industries have cropped up to maximize profit on vulnerable people once they fall into crisis. Worst are the extended-stay hotels relied on by four of the five families Goldstone followed.
One double-income family with bad credit and an eviction on their record came to see their room at an Extended Stay America as an 'expensive prison.' The eight months they lived there in 2020, as they tried and failed to be approved for an apartment, cost them $17,000. That year, Extended Stay America raked in $96 million in profits; it was soon purchased by Blackstone for $6 billion. The extended-stay hotel business is booming in 'places where working people are most likely to be deprived of housing,' Goldstone writes. The people who end up languishing in these places are at the bottom of a 'housing caste system,' and the hotels cash in on their desperation and lack of other options, often charging twice as much as the apartments in the area that won't rent to their customers.
Sarah Jones, a senior writer at New York magazine, says this class of people is seen as 'disposable.' In 'Disposable: America's Contempt for the Underclass,' Jones grapples with how the covid-19 pandemic exposed preexisting societal conditions that leave certain groups of people especially vulnerable. This includes those experiencing 'official' homelessness — Jones notes that New York City's shelter system, for instance, had an age-adjusted covid mortality rate that was 50 percent higher than the city's cumulative rate by February 2021. But even before the pandemic, officially homeless people were dying prematurely — their life expectancy is just 48. Indeed, as Jones writes, 'trends in COVID mortality were built on long-standing social inequalities,' meaning the virus caused disproportionate harm not just to people experiencing homelessness but also to seniors, people with disabilities, poor people, 'essential' low-wage workers, Black and Indigenous communities, and incarcerated people.
Jones forcefully argues that our country's capitalist system deems the deaths of such people acceptable. Throughout the book, she draws on Friedrich Engels's theory of 'social murder' — which posits that society is guilty of murder when a worker dies a premature and unnatural death — as well as the theory of social Darwinism, to lay the blame for covid deaths on our economy's relentless quest for profit.
'Disposable' lacks the deep, sustained reporting and detailed narratives that drive 'There Is No Place for Us.' But five years after the World Health Organization declared covid a pandemic, Jones's book stands as a reminder of the lessons our country has willfully ignored — an especially stark one with Donald Trump back in the White House and further shredding the social safety net.
Both 'Disposable' and 'There Is No Place for Us' force readers to reckon with how American society has drawn lines that assume certain people are undeserving of security, in health and in housing. Our calculus rests on a capitalistic system that pushes profits to those at the very top while inflicting suffering and even death on those at the bottom. 'We have taken it for granted that housing is a commodity, a vehicle for accumulating wealth, and that the few who own it will invariably profit at the expense of the many who need it,' Goldstone writes toward the end of his book. We could just as easily, he and Jones argue, take for granted that housing and health are human rights and public goods, and that all levels of government should invest in them as such. We could take for granted that none of us is disposable.

Better yet, the new tool glows on contact with contamination, serving as both a purifier and an real-time monitoring system. 4 Research suggests the majority of Americans have 'forever chemicals' in their drinking water. sebra – Forever chemicals — officially known as per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) — are tiny, man-made compounds that break down very slowly and accumulate in people, animals and the environment over time. They've been used since the 1940s in everything from non-stick cookware and grease-resistant food packaging to waterproof fabrics and personal care products. But concerns are mounting over the potential health effects of PFAS, with some experts likening them to 'slow poison.' One of the most widely used forever chemicals, perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), has been linked to higher risks of certain cancers, liver damage, immune system issues, high cholesterol and even developmental delays in fetuses and children. It has been detected across a range of environments and products — from soil and rainfall to seafood, human blood and drinking water. 4 While PFOA was previously used in the manufacturing of non-stock cookware, it has largely been phased out due to concerns about potential health and environmental risks. Dina – In fact, a 2020 study estimated that more than 200 million Americans are drinking water contaminated with PFOA or PFOS, another notorious forever chemical formally known as perfluorooctane sulfonate. Now, researchers at the University of Utah may have found a way to help reduce that exposure. The scientists recently developed a lab-engineered, crystalline substance known as a metal-organic framework (MOF) that functions like a molecular sieve. When water flows through the material, it snags and traps PFOA molecules, effectively removing the forever chemical. 4 The work builds on past research from the team that created a porous material that fluoresces in the presence of PFAS. THE UNIVERSITY OF UTAH In lab tests, the MOF cleared out more than 99% of the toxic substance in just five minutes. 'This sort of rapid treatment is crucial for real-world applications,' the study authors wrote in their report. The material also worked in the presence of other PFAS compounds, salts, and natural organic matter found in drinking water supplies, suggesting it could perform well in a variety of real-world environmental conditions. Better yet, the MOF can be reused, with researchers finding it retained 93% of its adsorption efficiency after five wash cycles. That's a big deal, since current methods for removing PFAS are often slow, costly, inefficient and don't hold up well after repeated use. 4 PFAS in drinking water are estimated to contribute to more than 6,800 cancer cases each year. WESTOCK – An added bonus: when PFOA molecules bind to the material, it glows fluorescent — providing instant, on-the-spot confirmation of contamination. 'This MOF represents a major leap forward for PFAS remediation,' Rana Dalapati, the study's lead author, said in a statement. 'Its ability to both selectively capture and sensitively detect PFOA in real time makes it a versatile and practical solution for water treatment and environmental monitoring,' she added. Looking ahead, the team believes this material could one day be adapted to capture other PFAS chemicals, not just PFOA. Look for one certified by the National Sanitation Foundation to reduce levels of PFOA and PFOS to help limit your exposure.

The Globe went looking for big ideas that might work. Here's what we found: Pay students for attendance Boston School Committee member Brandon Cardet-Hernandez has called for Think that's extreme? This approach has been The Detroit program, which officials recently decided to extend, caps out at $1,000 per student per year. That may sound exorbitant, but Massachusetts spends more than $21,000 per student per year; spending a fraction to make sure those students actually attend school could be worth it. Advertisement Cardet-Hernandez said it was missed opportunity to not use the state's federal pandemic relief funds on paying for attendance. Doing so would be an 'upfront investment' in the future of the region's students and economy. 'When we have young people who are years behind in literacy and math skills, is there an opportunity for us to think differently about our values and to create a financial incentive to grow those skills?' he asked. Related : Make kids get some sleep Tim Daly, chief executive officer of the education nonprofit EdNavigator, pointed to Sleep is a hard problem for schools to address — it happens when children are at home — but Daly had one idea for how schools could help: disabling school-issued devices. 'Sometimes when kids stay up too late, they're using the devices to 'do homework' but really they're using them to stream,' Daly said. 'Not only would [disabling them] prevent them that, [schools] can message to parents, when that goes off, it's time to go to sleep.' Advertisement Focus on the neediest students Lawrence Public Schools, a high-poverty district that serves large numbers of immigrants, has made major gains from its peak in 2022, when the majority of students were chronically absent. Its overall rate is higher than the state, but rapid progress has continued. As of March of this year, absenteeism was down to 21 percent, a 4.5 point improvement from 2024, and many groups — low income students, English learners, and Black students — have lower absenteeism rates than peers statewide. Ralph Carrero, the superintendent, said the district's Homeless/Newcomer Coalition was the key intervention. The coalition brings together more than a dozen of the city's social service agencies and nonprofits — housing, healthcare, transportation, food, and more. The members meet monthly to individually discuss every homeless or new-to-the-country immigrant student in the district and make sure their needs are being met, in and outside of school. 'It's not a formula, it's not a secret, it's paying attention,' Carrero said. The district has about 500 homeless students each year and many recent immigrants, so focusing on meeting their needs has a big impact on attendance. Get pediatricians involved Mary Beth Miotto, a pediatrician and former president of the state chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, encourages her colleagues to consider school attendance a 'vital sign,' just like blood pressure. Because pediatricians are not part of the school system, Miotto has found she can have positive conversations with parents without unintentionally invoking the specter of truancy. Advertisement Absenteeism is highest among high-needs populations, including low income students, who may not have primary care physicians, so Miotto said everyone in the medical profession, including ER and urgent care doctors, should be asking about school attendance. 'We can pour all the money into schools and teachers, but if kids aren't showing up, it's not helping,' she said. Restructure schools around relationships Hedy Chang, founder and director of the nonprofit Attendance Works, praised Providence's Nathanael Greene Middle School, which cut its absenteeism rate from more than 50 percent in 2021-22 to 30 percent in 2023-24, about equal to its pre-pandemic level. Attendance experts swear by relationship-building, as students have to believe people will miss them when they're gone, but just deciding to build relationships isn't necessarily enough. The school's principal, W. Jackson Reilly, 'reorganized the school so relationship-building was built into how it operated,' Chang said. Students are divided into cohorts, with a specified team of teachers sticking to one of them, Chang said. Each cohort also had classrooms close to each other. Related : This meant that the students were face-to-face with the same group of classmates and teachers, every day, rather than bouncing around to far-flung parts of the school. Districts need to design schools so relationships don't depend on 'happenstance,' Chang said. Robert Balfanz, the director of the Everyone Graduates Center at Johns Hopkins University School of Education, suggested bringing in outside mentors, such as local college students, for a similar reason. 'If you're a school with 200 or 300 chronically absent kids, you're going to have to form some partnerships,' he said. 'Get more adults in the school.' Advertisement Even tutoring, which can be hamstrung by high absenteeism, In some cases, incentivize through consequences Absenteeism has risen in every type of district since the pandemic, and in some places, 'negative nudges' could help, Balfanz said. For example, he said, many high schoolers play hooky regularly but still turn in the assignments posted online by their teachers so their grades aren't negatively affected. Some of those students might attend regularly if their grades were on the line for attendance or if the homework wasn't online. 'The benefits of being in school are more than just the assignments,' Balfanz noted. 'If I'm on a four-day-a-week plan and think I can skate by, a more negative nudge might get me to make that fifth day.' Are 2 to 3 cups of coffee a day too much? It's complicated, experts say: 'It's different for each person'
Two-thirds of Americans drink coffee every single day, according to data collected by the National Coffee Association in 2022, and the debate about how much is too much and whether or not any amount of caffeine is safe persists. But recent research shows that the answer is more complicated than you'd think. A Harvard study, that followed nearly 50,000 women over the course of 30 years and published in June, found that drinking coffee every day may lead to healthy aging in women. One to three cups a day was also linked to heart health benefits and lower mortality rates. But research also shows that high coffee consumption can increase your likelihood of dementia. And a 2022 paper published in the Journal of the American Heart Association found a link between heavy coffee consumption and an increased risk of dying from cardiovascular disease in people with hypertension. Benefits, drawbacks, and the right amount all depend on your individual lifestyle and overall health. And health experts consistently advise that, like with most things, moderation is key for your daily coffee. Deepak Chopra, author, speaker and proponent of alternative medicine, told CNBC Make It in 2023 that he drinks two to three cups of coffee each day before noon. While that may sound like too much caffeine for the average person, it's actually within a healthy range. "Drinking two to three cups before noon is safe to do," registered dietitian Roxana Ehsani said in an interview with CNBC Make It last year. "As long as they don't greatly surpass 400 milligrams of caffeine." Ehsani's suggestion follows the Food and Drug Administration's recommendation of consuming no more than 400 milligrams of caffeine a day, which can include the caffeine found in teas, energy drinks, sodas and chocolate. Certain people may benefit from consuming much less caffeine than is recommended by the FDA. Caffeine tolerance varies from person to person, with some people feeling anxious or jittery after just one or two cups of coffee. "Within those milligram or cup of coffee recommendations, if you start feeling overly tired and the caffeine is not helping, then you've got to stop [drinking it]," dietitian Jessica Sylvester told NBC News. "If your heart starts beating incredibly fast, you've got to stop. It's different for each person." Pregnant people should consider cutting back on caffeine. And people who have diabetes or cardiovascular disease should be mindful of their sugar intake when having coffee, Nikki Cota, a dietitian at the Mayo Clinic, told NBC News. Expert opinion also varies on if teens should drink coffee, but "avoiding caffeine is the best choice for all kids," according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. But for everyone else, if you're having two to three cups, or more, "be mindful of what you're experiencing," registered dietitian Maddie Pasquariello says. And make sure you're not replacing meals with caffeine. Ehsani recommends drinking water or having a meal before reaching for coffee since caffeine suppresses appetite. And if you notice your sleep is affected when you have a coffee in the afternoon, experts suggest a mornings-only rule for your daily latte or macchiato.
