Pesticide Container Recycling Programme launched at oil palm plantations
LAHAD DATU: The Pesticide Container Recycling Programme introduced at oil palm plantations here is aimed at ensuring the systematic and safe disposal of used pesticide containers.
Deputy Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Mohammad Yusof Apdal said the initiative, which involves the construction of dedicated recycling cages, is being implemented at seven plantation sites here.
He said Sabah is among the states with the highest usage of pesticides in the country, making it crucial to adopt disposal methods that comply with established environmental guidelines.
'The installation of these recycling cages at strategic locations will make it easier for smallholders to dispose of containers safely,' he said when launching the programme at Rimmer Estate here today.
Mohammad Yusof said that used pesticide containers are classified as Scheduled Waste under code SW409 and must be disposed of at licensed facilities under the Department of Environment.
He also noted that seven plantation companies have contributed RM3,000 each for the construction of the recycling cages at the identified sites.
Meanwhile, KL-Kepong (Sabah) Sdn Bhd Lahad Datu Division general manager Saparuddin Rabayani said the estate was chosen to host the programme in recognition of the company's strong track record in implementing recycling practices.
'KL-Kepong has effectively embraced recycling initiatives on a significant scale, making this estate a leading example for other plantation companies,' he said.

KLUANG, June 30 (Bernama) -- The Department of Labour Peninsular Malaysia (JTKSM) is committed to supporting the government's efforts to enhance national education and help nurture a quality future generation. Its director-general, Kamal Pardi, said that, through the MADANI Adopted School (Sekolah Angkat MADANI or SAM) initiative, a comprehensive, collaborative, and high-impact approach is being implemented to upgrade facilities at the department's adopted school, Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Seri Macap, here, to create a more comfortable and conducive learning environment. He said SK Seri Macap was selected as JTKSM's adopted school due to its status as a rural school, with the aim of upgrading its facilities and infrastructure to be on par with urban schools. 'An allocation of RM100,000 has been approved for SK Seri Macap. 'This initiative reflects our commitment to building a sustainable and inclusive education ecosystem. At the same time, JTKSM will play its part in contributing to the development of the nation's human capital,' he told reporters after launching the JTKSM MADANI Adopted School 2025 at SK Seri Macap, here, today. Also present were Kluang district education officer Ayob Ibrahim and SK Seri Macap headmaster Sharudin Md Taib. Meanwhile, Kamal said that the success of the initiative at the school was made possible through collaboration with Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) and the school's Parent-Teacher Association. 'Five main components are being prioritised under the programme. These are improvements to physical facilities and infrastructure; academic programmes and student guidance; teacher training and professional development; financial aid for basic needs; and the development of students' character and soft skills. He added that, among the physical upgrades at SK Seri Macap are the construction of an open stage, a Zaaba pedestrian path, roof and staircase, meeting rooms, air-conditioning installations and smart television, as well as renovations to the library and screening room.

Month-long celebration marks Petaling Jaya city anniversary

Celebrations culminated in a concert and parade at Laman MBPJ, near its headquarters. Guest of honour, Selangor public health and environment committee chairman Jamaliah Jamaluddin, noted that Petaling Jaya played a significant role in ensuring success of the state's development initiatives. 'Petaling Jaya has demonstrated its commitment to realising initiatives related to digital transformation, economic empowerment, environmental recovery and green development, as well as efforts to enhance the people's well-being,' said Jamaliah, who is also Bandar Utama assemblyman. Also present were Seri Setia assemblyman Dr Mohammad Fahmi Ngah, Bukit Lanjan assemblyman Pua Pei Ling, Petaling Jaya mayor Mohamad Zahri Samingon and deputy mayor Aznan Hassan, alongside MBPJ senior management and councillors. Ngemah rep calls for unity among multi-racial communities

He emphasised that this can be achieved through collaborative programmes such as the 'ngiling bidai' initiative, which involves cooperation between the Village Security and Development Committee (JKKK) and relevant government agencies. 'Like sticks tied together, stronger and not easily broken – that is the symbol of unity that needs to be nurtured and instilled in the community,' said Anyi, as quoted in a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS) report during the ngiling bidai ceremony. The event was jointly organised by the Bukit Sepali Madani Community and the Nanga Ngungun Zone 1 Neighbourhood Area Committee (KRT), held at Rumah Taboh Rimau in Nanga Ngungun here on Friday. Hosted by village chief Tuai Rumah Taboh, the ceremony was also attended by Pelagus assemblyman Wilson Nyabong Ijang.
