KOTA KINABALU (July 24): The decision on Kota Kinabalu's designation as a UNESCO Creative City of Literature by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is expected to be announced by October this year.
Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Dr Mohd Ariffin Mohd Arif stated that if approved, Kota Kinabalu would become the 60th UNESCO City of Literature and the second in Southeast Asia after Jakarta's recognition in 2021.
'Our city is currently being evaluated by UNESCO. Barring any obstacles, the decision on Kota Kinabalu's status as a UNESCO City of Literature is expected soon, potentially by October this year.
'To support Kota Kinabalu's bid, we must actively organize literary activities, especially through non-governmental organizations (NGOs). The government has allocated funds for NGOs to conduct seminars, festivals, literary gatherings, and strengthen local book publishing.
'There is a need to increase publications of literary works, whether by government bodies or NGOs,' he said during his speech at the 'Night of Manifestation Towards Kota Kinabalu's Recognition as a UNESCO City of Literature' and the 2025 Language and Literature Assistance Contribution (SELASIH) ceremony here yesterday.
As the State Executive Councillor for Education, he explained that SELASIH contributions are a government initiative to support literary, language and writing associations through financial aid from the Sabah state government.
'Last year, the government granted RM156,000 to 15 applicant associations. As of July this year, 20 associations have applied and are listed to receive SELASIH aid, involving an allocation of RM220,000.'
He expressed hope that the contributions would invigorate literary activities in Kota Kinabalu and bolster its UNESCO bid.
Also present were Kota Kinabalu Mayor Datuk Seri Dr Sabin Samitah, Deputy State Secretary for Special Tasks Datuk Mohd Hanafiah Mohd Kassim, Director of the Institute of Language and Literature Jennitah Noordin, and CEO of the Sabah Development Institute Associate Professor Datuk Ts. Dr. Ramzah Dambul.

Anwar: Development must not come at cost of people's welfare

MUAR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has stressed that Malaysia's development must not come at the cost of people's rights and welfare, but instead be implemented based on the principles of justice and holistic balance. He said that sustainable economic development should not be carried out by marginalising the lower-income group, but instead provide equal benefits to all segments of society. "Let's not develop while destructing. We construct buildings, industries, technologies, economic zones… but the people are oppressed, neglected. "This is not true development," he said during the launch of the National Month and Fly the Jalur Gemilang 2025 Campaign at Dataran Tanjung Emas here today. Also present were Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi, Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar, and Information Department director-general Julina Johan. Elaborating, Anwar said the principle of balance, or ummatan wasatan, which is stressed in the Quran, encompasses justice from the perspective of faith and knowledge, spiritual and physical, as well as worldly and the hereafter. The prime minister also stressed the importance of a fair fiscal policy, including the implementation of progressive taxation that targets high-income earners and huge profit-making corporations, rather than burdening the poor. "We cannot tax the poor. "If schools need to be repaired, where must the money come from? We impose taxes on the rich and companies making millions in profits," he said. He cited major companies like Petronas, Tenaga Nasional Bhd and Maybank as examples that need to streamline their minimum wage policies with the profits they earn. "If a company makes RM1 million profit, but pays its workers RM1,500… how can? We have already raised the minimum wage from RM1,200 to RM1,500, and now to RM1,700. We will continue to do so gradually," he said. Anwar also said that independence is not merely a historical symbol, but it also comes with the responsibility to ensure the nation's wealth is distributed fairly and does not only benefit the elite.

[UPDATED] Anwar: Subsidised petrol price of RM1.99 for Malaysians, not foreigners

MUAR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today stressed that the recently announced subsidised price of RON95 petrol at RM1.99 per litre is exclusively for Malaysians, while foreigners will be charged the current market rate. He said the move is crucial to ensure that the government's substantial subsidies are enjoyed solely by Malaysian citizens, in line with the Madani government's commitment to social justice. "RON95 petrol is sold to Malaysians at RM1.99 per litre. Foreigners and tourists, including those from Singapore, will have to pay the market rate of RM2.50 or RM2.60 per litre. "This is not a form of discrimination, but the policy of a sovereign nation committed to protecting the welfare of its people," he said in his speech at the National Month and Fly the Jalur Gemilang 2025 Campaign launch at Dataran Tanjung Emas here today. Also present were Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi, Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar and Information Department director-general Julina Johan. Anwar said the targeted subsidy initiative is expected to reduce government expenditure, which has long been enjoyed by foreigners who neither pay taxes nor contribute directly to the national economy. He also criticised the remarks of an opposition leader from Johor who allegedly questioned the decision to limit the fuel subsidy to Malaysian citizens. "An opposition leader asked why foreigners have to pay more. I don't understand. I am the Prime Minister of Malaysia. "Foreigners do not pay taxes like Malaysians. In which country do non-citizens receive subsidies equal to those given to locals? My primary responsibility is to look after the welfare of Malaysians," he said. Anwar also stressed that fuel prices in Malaysia are not raised arbitrarily, adding that despite fiscal pressures, the government has kept prices among the lowest in the region. "If you don't believe me, just look at the fuel prices in Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia, all of which are much higher. We are still able to provide (RON95) at RM1.99 per litre. That is my responsibility," he said. He added that savings from the subsidy rationalisation initiative would be channelled towards strengthening welfare programmes, rural development, and gradually increasing the minimum wage, including in the public sector and government-linked companies.
