Ropar: Encouraging students to set up their own start-ups during schooling, Punjab school education minister Harjot Singh Bains on Saturday announced that the state govt would provide skill education in business and marketing to all the Class XI and XII students in govt schools from the 2026-27 academic session under the Punjab Young Entrepreneurs Scheme.

Addressing the Business Blasters Expo 2025 here, Bains said in a world where hundreds and thousands of applicants chased a single job, Punjab's govt had flipped the script. Under the Business Blasters Expo 2025, students are being encouraged to become job creators instead of job seekers, he said, adding that the Punjab govt would provide all kinds of assistance, both financial and technical, to all the progressive-minded students.Referring to the Business Blasters Expo 2025, the minister said 10 student-led ventures, selected from govt schools across Punjab, demonstrated their business ideas in a shark tank-style showdown before govt leaders, industrialists, startup founders, and educationists.
All teams were successful in getting financial assistance to make their dreams come true. The remaining 30 teams also showcased and sold their products at Expo stalls, he said.
Bains informed that an investment of Rs 17 lakh was made to set up innovation labs, where students would now be able to develop their own products, even in collaboration with the IITs.
Highlighting the Punjab Young Entrepreneurs Scheme, he said the state govt had started a new era of student entrepreneurship.
This began as a pilot project in 30 schools in the state, where students were asked to present and pitch their business ideas. One shining example is a girl from a BPL (below poverty line) family at Govt Mullanpur Dakha School, who created decorative flower pots that sold for 20 times their price in Ludhiana.
Similarly, a youth from the Anandpur Sahib constituency now buys T-shirts from Gurugram and resells them via Instagram, earning Rs 50,000 a month, the minister highlighted.

He mentioned that the leading 10 teams of students showcased business ideas such as electrical cycles, natural beauty products, handmade dupattas (scarves), driving simulators, artwork framing, natural ingredient masalas (spices), safety sticks, chocolates, herbal soaps, and many other innovative products.
AAP leader and former deputy CM of Delhi Manish Sasodia, who was also present at the expo, said the Punjab Young Entrepreneurs Scheme would be a milestone.
"Going forward, govt school students will need to present a business idea to be eligible to pass. Students must gain practical understanding and real-world learning. Those graduating from Class XII will leave with something they've created, sold, and earned money from.
Regardless of their chosen degree or diploma, every student must learn how to earn while studying," he said,
Sisodia pointed out that every year, 1 crore graduates passed out in India, but only 10 lakh got jobs, the rest continued searching for private sector employment.
Between 2014-15 and 2021-22, according to a Parliament report, 22.05 crore youth applied for jobs, but only 7 lakh got them. This stark gap underscores the urgency of programmes like 'Business Blasters', he added.
"Under the Business Blasters Expo 2025, it is now mandatory for students to present at least one business idea as a subject-based project. This programme ensures that every student will not only gain financial literacy and independence but also learn the essentials of marketing and entrepreneurship.
This is a historic and visionary step, one that will empower and enable every student to stand tall with capability and confidence," said Sisodia.
Rajya Sabha member Vikramjeet Sahni announced Rs 10 lakh to the first 10 teams to establish their ventures. Other business persons, industrialists, and senior officers from the state govt present at the event also assured the students of technical expertise and financial assistance.
Pramod Bhasin, founder of Genpact; Anuj Kundra, member of Punjab Development Commission; Anandita Mitra, secretary, School Education Punjab Board; and first jury team members Hemant Kanakia, founder and former CEO of Torrent Networking Technologies; Sairee Chahal, founder and CEO of Sheros; Shray Pathak, head of Technology Business Incubator Foundation, IIT Ropar; and others were also present.

Clean-label food startup Khetika raises ₹154 crore for expansion

Clean-label food startup Khetika on Monday said it has raised ₹18 million, or about Rs 154 crore, from a clutch of investors for expansion. Narotam Sekhsaria Family Office and Anicut Capital, along with existing investors Incofin India Progress Fund, Rajasthan Gum, and Shree Ram India Gums participated in the funding round, a statement said. The company, which aims to make preservative-free food accessible to every Indian household, plans to use the funds to fuel growth, brand building and operational expansion, the statement said, adding that it will also provide secondary exit to early investors. The Mumbai-based company sells products through e-commerce platforms and large retail stores only, and is aiming to expand into new cities and build teams across innovation, marketing, and operations. The company's co-founder and chief executive, Prithwi Singh said at a time when the Indian food sector is grappling with "adulteration and high use of harmful chemicals" Khetika procures directly from farmers and has a differentiated product and supply chain ecosystem. He added that the company has had a remarkable growth in the past, and is now "aiming to scale by 10X over the next three years". "We believe the Indian Food space is set for transformation with more consumers preferring healthy and clean food," Narotam Sekhsaria Family Office's head of private investments Narayanan Venkitraman said.

Gold prices fall over Rs 400, silver down Rs 1,000 amid US tariff uncertainties

Gold rates fell over Rs 400 on Monday amid looming uncertainty over the US reciprocal tariffs, as silver prices also took a hit of over Rs 1,000. The 24-carat gold prices closed at Rs 96,596, down Rs 425 against the previous day's closing price of Rs 97,021, the India Bullion and Jewellers Association (IBJA) latest data showed. As per the data, silver was priced at Rs 106,531 per kg, down Rs 1,049 as compared to Rs 107,580, the last day's price. Gold has come down slightly after the ceasefire announcements as well as stronger than expected US data in recent days. 'However, given that gold buying by central banks is running at above 1,000 tonnes per annum, and unlikely to abate in the next few months, and that inflation is still running higher than what the Fed expects," said Sandip Raichura, CEO of Retail Broking and Distribution and Director, PL Capital. Meanwhile, the future contract expiring on August 5 fell Rs 487 or 0.5 per cent to 96,503.0 per 10 grams against the previous day's closing price of Rs 96,990 on Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX). At the same time, Comex gold fell 0.93 per cent or $31.10 to $3,311.80 per ounce. "Gold prices stayed range bound to weak near Rs 96,650, down about Rs 350, as Comex gold slipped to $3,310 amid cautious sentiment," said Jateen Trivedi, VP Research Analyst-Commodity and Currency, LKP Securities. The expiry of the US trade tariff extension timeline keeps uncertainty around global trade deals in focus. Participants expect a possible extension, which is keeping gold under slight pressure, said analysts. Meanwhile, due to investor hesitancy over the interim India-US trade agreement, the Indian stock market closed flat on Monday. The Sensex ended the day at 83,409.68, up just 9.61 points, or 0.01 per cent. The Nifty ended the day unchanged at 25,461.30, up 0.30 points.
