College students are using ChatGPT as their personal life coach — 5 prompts to try it (even if you're not Gen Z)

Tom's Guide14-05-2025
College students are finding new ways to use ChatGPT that go beyond writing essays and brainstorming ideas. According to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, students are relying on chatbots for so much more than homework help.In a recent video taken at Sequoia Capital's AI Ascent event, Altman explained that Gen Z is using ChatGPT to make real decisions about their goals, relationships, routines and their future as a whole.
Unlike Google, ChatGPT gives advice in full sentences. It can remember context, offer suggestions without judgment and talk through your uncertainty like a calm, 24/7 sounding board.Personally, I've used ChatGPT to tackle everything from project summaries to panic attacks, and have found it to be a great sounding board when facing tough choices. While it's no substitute for human guidance or a therapist, ChatGPT can be a great assistant in a pinch. If you're interested in trying it for yourself, here are the 5 best prompts to turn ChatGPT into your own personal life coach.
Prompt: 'Help me make a decision between two things. Ask me questions first.'
Why it works: ChatGPT shines when you give it room to think with you. In other words, speak to it as you would a friend, not like a Google search.
The chatbot will ask clarifying questions, help you weigh pros and cons and even flag emotional bias.
AI can often help in ways when human emotion clouds judgement. As a bot, it doesn't have feelings and won't judge you even when the decision is life-changing.
Prompt: 'I'm overwhelmed and don't know where to start. Can you help me prioritize my day?'
Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips.
Why it works: When you don't know what to do and just want to throw your hands up, ChatGPT can offer some structure. You'll get a response that's often more realistic than your own to-do list. It's like an assistant when every day choices are bogging you down.
Prompt: 'I'm thinking about switching majors / jobs / cities. Talk me through the decision.'
Why it works: The longer you use ChatGPT (signed-in under one account), the better help it can be. The chatbot can remember conversations you've had, perhaps recall difficulties that may influence new decisions. It can also surface long-term vs. short-term consequences that you may not have considering, which can help you get clear on what matters most, without pushing you in one direction.
Prompt: "I need to have a hard conversation with someone. Can you help me script it?'
Why it works: From awkward roommate dynamics to asking your professor for an extension without sounding like you're making up an excuse, ChatGPT can help you phrase things in a way that's firm but still friendly. Honestly, I wish I'd had this in college — maybe it could've helped me gently explain to my roommate that midnight is not the ideal time for full-volume karaoke.
Prompt: 'Give me 3 questions to reflect on when I feel burned out.'
Why it works: These types of prompts help the model act as a vibe check for the way a college student is feeling emotionally and physically. Being focused on school, work, relationships and more can fog how someone's mental clarity. This is a quick check-in that can spot possible red flags.
Is ChatGPT a licensed therapist or professional coach? No. But is it surprisingly good at giving calm, helpful and sometimes eye-opening advice? Absolutely.
If you've ever felt stuck in your own head, overwhelmed by choices, or just need someone to 'talk it through' with, ChatGPT might be the easiest life coach you'll never have to book.

AI researcher ‘turns down $1bn pay offer from Mark Zuckerberg'

A tech worker has reportedly turned down a $1bn (£750m) pay deal to join Mark Zuckerberg's artificial intelligence (AI) unit amid an escalating war for talent in Silicon Valley. Mr Zuckerberg's Meta reportedly offered several researchers who work at Thinking Machines, a San Francisco-based AI start-up, packages worth hundreds of millions of dollars to join the social media giant. One of those packages would have been worth as much as $1bn over several years, according to a report from Wired, while some researchers were also offered between $200m and $500m over a four-year period. Most deals included an award worth $50m to $100m in the first year. So far, no staff at the start-up have taken up an offer from Meta. Last month, Thinking Machines raised $2bn at a $12bn valuation, despite having no product. A spokesman for Meta disputed the claims, although confirmed it had made a 'handful' of offers to staff at Thinking Machines. 'We made offers only to a handful of people at Thinking Machines and while there was one sizeable offer, the details are off,' the spokesman said. Thinking Machines was founded by 36-year-old Mira Murati, a former OpenAI executive who has become one of the powerful women in tech since launching the company. AI arms race The eye-watering pay offers come amid an AI arms race, with tech giants trying to tempt leading AI scientists and programmers to join their efforts over those of rivals. Sam Altman, the chief executive of OpenAI which owns ChatGPT, previously claimed Meta had offered his staff deals worth as much as $100m. Mr Zuckerberg has been personally leading a recruitment drive to attract leading scientists and developers to a new lab within Meta in a race against rivals to build highly powerful AI tools. The Meta chief executive has reportedly been reaching out to dozens of targets with personalised WhatsApp messages and bumper pay deals. Meta is spending tens of billions of dollars on AI data centres that will be used to help create more powerful machine-learning tools that Mr Zuckerberg has claimed could soon transform the economy and society. He has also already recruited around 50 leading researchers and experts for a new 'superintelligence' lab within Meta, after growing frustrated at the lack of progress by his own engineers. Earlier this year, Meta delayed a major update to its AI technology, dubbed Behemoth. Mr Zuckerberg also engineered a $14.3bn deal to poach Alexandr Wang, the founder of AI business Scale AI, to lead his new team, acquiring a 49pc stake in the start-up in the process. Should You Buy Nvidia (NVDA) Stock Before Aug. 27? Here's What History Says.

Key Points AI developments have boosted Nvidia's valuation, making it the world's most valuable public company. There is no direct correlation between an earnings beat or miss and Nvidia's immediate stock performance. But the high valuation of Nvidia's shares could leave it extra volatile, regardless of its reported results. 10 stocks we like better than Nvidia › With the emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) into the mainstream, driven by the popularity of generative AI tools like ChatGPT, numerous tech companies -- as well as those from any industry that utilizes AI -- have seen their valuations skyrocket. No stock has benefited more from recent AI developments than Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA), which is up over 900% in just the past three years and is the world's most valuable public company with a market capitalization of over $4.2 trillion. For perspective, the is "only" up around 60% in that span. On Aug. 27, Nvidia is set to report its fiscal second-quarter earnings. Only time will tell what those earnings reveal, but it's natural for investors to wonder if they should buy Nvidia's stock before the earnings to potentially take advantage of a post-earnings stock price boost. In theory, it sounds like a smart move if you anticipate good results; however, history has shown that this doesn't always work out in investors' favor, regardless of the earnings results. No correlation between earnings and stock performance The first thing to notice in the above chart is that there's no consistency between Nvidia's earnings and the immediate performance of its stock price. Below is how Nvidia's stock price has performed the day after its past four earnings reports: Reporting Date Beat Earnings Per Share Expectations? Next-Day Stock Performance May 2025 No (2.9%) February 2025 Yes (8.5%) November 2024 Yes 0.5% August 2024 Yes (6.4%) Data source: AlphaQuery and YCharts. Even after beating earnings expectations, Nvidia's stock has experienced noticeable declines on the next day. This shows that investors aren't solely concerned about over- or underperformance. They may also be looking at factors like future guidance, valuations, and overall market sentiment. Correlation (or lack thereof) aside, one thing to keep in mind is that trying to time the market is a recipe for disappointment and can often be counterproductive. Even if it seems like a stock's price should move in a certain direction because of results, the stock market doesn't operate on logical cause and effect. Nvidia's high valuation leaves little room for error Nvidia's trailing-12-month price-to-sales (P/S) ratio of 29 is the highest you'll find in an S&P 500 stock and 10 times the S&P 500 average. This ultra-high valuation leaves Nvidia with little room for error -- or what investors may perceive as error -- and can increase volatility. If you like Nvidia as a company, a smart strategy would be to dollar-cost average. This will allow you to slowly but surely accumulate shares and offset some of the volatility risks. Nvidia's stock has shown long-term growth despite short-term drops, and that's what investors should focus on the most and bank on. Should you invest $1,000 in Nvidia right now? Vibe Coding And The 'Platformification' Of Market Insights

Vibe coding for faster, deeper consumer insights Vibe coding is a software development approach that uses AI, particularly (LLMs), to generate and refine code based on high-level NL instructions, saving a massive amount of manpower and time vs. manual coding. It enables non-coders to easily and accessibly achieve desired outcomes by letting AI handle the technical aspects of the development process. 'Platformification', my favorite new term this year which I'm seeing across many contexts, involves consolidating platforms, data, analysis and suppliers to achieve end to end insights and solutions, making information access and analysis across databases, departments and geographies far easier, faster and more cost-effective. In the past 5 months since the term vibe coding was coined, the concept has transformed software development lifecycles and it has jumped to an entirely different space: market insights. To understand more, I spoke with Discuss, a market insights platform I'd been hearing about from friends at CPG companies because it is at the forefront of the transformation to AI solutions spanning a broad spectrum of marketing research activities. Discuss takes a vibe coding approach to make it easier for non-researchers to gain in-depth human understanding of their consumers. The company accomplishes this by enabling users to tell AI agents who you want to talk to and what you want to ask them. AI handles the rest. To quote Adam Mertz, Chief Growth Officer at Discuss, 'marketing research has progressed more in the past 2 years, than in the previous 20 years'. Vibe coding marketing research has many advantages for gaining better insights for clients across sectors. One of the most important is that it enables anyone without a research background to look beyond what people do and buy in order to understanding why they engage in certain actions and make certain purchases. It also enables anyone to tap into the psychology of their audience in just hours instead of weeks or even months. Their agentic approach involves a myriad of different market insights tasks, from helping to create interview discussion guides, to recruiting interviewees and coordinating project logistics, to conducting interviews, translating interviews into multiple languages, extracting insights, capturing quotes and relevant videoclips, to creating reports and presentations. Advantages of vibe coding market insights include: AI interviewers are very conversational. They remember prior questions and answers, understand context, and can improvise relevant questions on the fly based on prior question responses from interviewees. Remarkably, it understands when interviewees pause because they are thinking. It's patient and interested in all they say to get at the why of their product preferences and behaviors. Clients can select moderator styles such as a more business-like vs. a more casual style and tone, or a British accent vs. an American accent. Other benefits and capabilities include: To quote Georgina Farmer, Insights and Customer Experience Leader at the healthcare company Dexcom, 'The ability to translate the consumer interviews and insight summaries we conduct with Discuss so all our offices around the world can hear them in real time, is a game changer. The ability to easily extract themes across many key databases, is a monumental time saver, and the accuracy of the insights has been impressive.' Humans are still better for certain types of insights. As Maria Rydzewski, Principal at Mastercard Data & Services shared, "for all the benefits of AI, nothing will replace human-to-human connection. Discuss is the only market insights platform we've found that offers both AI and human-moderated research. Their AI moderation is a great tool in our toolkit. When we're talking about something sensitive like people paying bills or financial stress, traditional human-led research is probably still going to be a better approach. But if it's message testing or product feedback, AI is great for scale, speed, and efficiency.' Take-Aways For CMO's Things are moving incredibly fast in transforming marketing research processes, in large part due to AI advances. There's a massive risk of firms being left behind if they aren't yet experimenting with GenAI market insights vibe coding. Since the cost savings can be enormous, more consumer questions can be explored and answered, the complexity of synthesizing multiple databases greatly simplified, and the time and manpower involved significantly reduced, there's no reason not to get started.
