First Sea Lord stripped of rank over affair with younger officer
The former First Sea Lord was sacked from the Navy's top job earlier this year after it was discovered he had had an affair with a colleague.
The Telegraph revealed last month that the affair was exposed after the husband of the female colleague Sir Ben was having the affair with filed a complaint.
An investigation into his behaviour has now been completed by the Ministry of Defence, and Sir Ben has had his service terminated and been stripped of his commission.
The investigation, which took two months to conclude, found Sir Ben's behaviour had fallen 'far short of values and standards expected of Service Personnel'.
Chief of Defence Staff Admiral Sir Tony Radakin said: 'We expect the highest standards of behaviour from our Service Personnel and our Civil Servants.
'We investigate all allegations of inappropriate behaviour and will take robust action against anyone found to have fallen short of our standards, regardless of their seniority.'
Sir Ben, 59, said that he was grateful for the support of his wife and family.
He said: 'Serving as First Sea Lord has been one of the greatest privileges of my life, and I pay tribute to the dedicated and professional Officers, Sailors, Royal Marines and Civil Servants who make up the Royal Navy.
'I deeply regret my conduct in the spring of last year, which fell well below the standard I set for myself and that which I set for the Royal Navy. As such, I fully accept the decision of the Defence Council.
'I am very sorry to those I have hurt personally, and I apologise to everyone who serves with the Royal Navy.
'Finally, I am very grateful for the support of my wife, family and friends during a very difficult time.'
A source told The Telegraph that when Sir Ben's affair was reported to the MoD, he tried to go away 'quietly', however an investigation was insisted on.
While Sir Tony, CDS, was inclined to let Sir Ben retire quietly to avoid embarrassment, General Dame Sharon Nesmith, the Vice Chief of the Defence Staff, and John Healey, the Defence Secretary, felt an inquiry should take place.
Sir Ben will continue to receive his pension despite his dismissal from service.
It is the first time in 500 years that the head of the Royal Navy has been investigated for misconduct.

Nottingham Forest have formally lodged a complaint with the Premier League over Tottenham Hotspur's move for Morgan Gibbs-White. Forest have decided to take action after consulting their lawyers, with the club claiming Spurs were never given permission to speak to Gibbs-White about a transfer and therefore made an illegal approach. Forest also believe there was a breach in confidentiality around the existence of Gibbs-White's release clause. Spurs have refused to comment on the action taken by Forest. After learning of Tottenham's move for Gibbs-White, who has two years left on his contract, Forest ceased all communication with the club. Forest officials claim Spurs breached Premier League Rule T.1, which states that any club wishing to talk to a player who is still under contract needs the prior written consent of the club the player is contracted to before an approach can be made. The rule also says that for any club to make a direct, or indirect, approach to a player who is under contract without that permission is in breach of the rules and could face disciplinary action. Gibbs-White, who has played four times for England, is understood to be ready for a fresh challenge at Tottenham and to play in the Champions League before the World Cup next year. Manchester City were interested in signing him at the start of the summer but chose to buy Rayan Cherki for £34million from Lyon instead, in a deal they completed before the start of the Club World Cup. Forest have already sold Anthony Elanga to Newcastle United for £55million, so to lose Gibbs-White in the same summer would be a huge blow to their head coach, Nuno Espírito Santo, and club owner Evangelos Marinakis. Forest would also pass on 10 per cent of any fee for Gibbs-White to Wolverhampton Wanderers, who agreed a sell-on clause when they sold him in 2022.

'They decided to take it upon themselves to begin making hurtful jibes towards Ms Bardsley. 'She recognises it was a colossal error of judgment to leave the party impetuously and get in her car.' He added: 'It's wasn't a flagrant disregard for the law. 'It was borne out of a set of circumstances and her quasi-celebrity status.' Bardsley had previously admitted drink-driving at South Cheshire magistrates' court. Yesterday, she got a 29-month road ban and must do 200 hours of unpaid work. MasterChef presenter John Torode confirms he was subject of racist language allegation
The MasterChef presenter John Torode has said he was the subject of an allegation of using racist language that was upheld as part of an inquiry into the behaviour of co-presenter Gregg Wallace. The report, commissioned by MasterChef's production company Banijay UK, found 45 out of 83 allegations against Wallace were substantiated, alongside two standalone allegations made against other people, including one for using racist language. In a post on Instagram, Torode confirmed he was the person alleged to have used racist language but said he had 'no recollection of the incident' and was 'shocked and saddened' by the allegation. 'I am aware of speculation that I am one of the two other individuals against whom an allegation has been upheld,' his statement said. 'For the sake of transparency, I confirm that I am the individual who is alleged to have used racial language on one occasion. 'The allegation is that I did so sometime in 2018 or 2019, in a social situation, and that the person I was speaking with did not believe that it was intended in a malicious way and that I apologised immediately afterwards. 'I have absolutely no recollection of any of this, and I do not believe that it happened. However, I want to be clear that I've always had the view that any racial language is wholly unacceptable in any environment. 'I'm shocked and saddened by the allegation as I would never wish to cause anyone any offence.' Wallace was sacked from MasterChef prior to the release of the report, which included one allegation of 'unwelcome physical contact' that was upheld. Wallace said he was 'deeply sorry for any distress caused' and that he 'never set out to harm or humiliate'. The BBC was contacted for comment.
