I stopped breathing more than 20 times every night - one change improved everything
Struggling with sleep can make your whole day a lot more difficult

There are few things more important to your overall wellbeing than getting a good night's sleep. And nothing brings that into sharper focus than failing to achieve it.
It's something I've had problems with all my adult life — I dread to think how many hours I've spent staring at the ceiling into the wee small hours, completely unable to nod off despite being really tired. And when I eventually do manage to drift off, when my alarm goes off just a few hours later I feel no better than I did when I tucked myself in, and spend the rest of the day in a barely-conscious haze.

I had a boss once who used to say there was little point in asking me to do something before midday. As for solutions, you name it, I've tried it. I can highly recommend an hour of non-screen time before bed, but having a nightcap before turning in only makes it harder to get up the next morning in my experience.

After years of struggling I finally decided enough was enough and asked my GP to refer me to my local health board's sleep team. It took five years to get an appointment (the small matter of a global pandemic might have played a part in that) but I finally got to see a specialist late last year.
My lovely partner had told me I sometimes stop breathing when I'm asleep, and the health board's sleep team told me I'd stopped breathing no fewer than 22 times the night I was monitored, a condition known as sleep apnoea.
That sounds like a lot — and obviously it's not ideal — but apparently that's actually considered fairly mid-range when it comes to sleep apnoea. People with severe cases can stop breathing 30 times or more in a single night.

I'd heard about CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machines, but to the best of my knowledge I'd never actually seen one. It was a bit of a surprise then to be presented with a surprisingly modern-looking piece of kit - a sleek black box roughly the size of a breadbin, with a long hose attached to a silicon mask.
The machine fits nicely on my bedside table
(Image: Ian Craig )
The machine works by keeping your airways open by feeding pressurised air through the mask. The steady stream of air means your airways stay open and you don't stop breathing.

On putting the mask on for the first time, my first thought was that I looked a bit like Bane from Batman film The Dark Knight Rises. Sadly I don't look like Tom Hardy when I take it off.
Nobody cared who I was until I put on the mask
(Image: Ian Craig )
There are quite a few settings on the machine to adjust, but ultimately it's really as simple as pressing a button to turn it on and off again when you wake up. I'm supposed to use it whenever I sleep, including if it's just a little afternoon nap — and it's surprising how quickly I got used to it.

I expected I'd struggle to sleep with a mask strapped tightly to my face, but really I barely notice it. The only really jarring thing is if I wake up while it's on full blast and blowing a jet of pressurised air into my lungs — but there's a button on the machine to get it to release the pressure when that happens.
It's also nowhere near as loud as I expected. I'd anticipated something in the region of a jet engine next to my bed, but it's really not even as loud as a desk fan. That is, unless you take the mask off or the hose out while it's turned on, upon which it makes an alarmingly vicious sucking noise. Lesson learned.
It also has an optional compartment on the side which you can fill with about a mug-worth of boiled water, which keeps moisture in the air in blows into your lungs. There's also a handy app I can use to see how well I've slept each night, and it even sends data directly to the health board's sleep team. The wonders of modern technology.

There's also an app I can use to monitor my breathing

But there's no getting away from the fact that it's not the most elegant piece of machinery in the world. With a mask strapped to my face with a long hose trailing from it, I can't help but be reminded of that bit in Alien when a face-hugger creature attaches itself to John Hurt. Thankfully my long-suffering partner claims not to mind.
But six months on, do I feel any different? To be honest: not really.

I still wake up feeling barely rested — but the number of times I stop breathing in an average night is down from more than 20 to only two or three, which can only be a good thing. I'm told I'll have a follow-up appointment in two years, so perhaps I'll feel differently then.
What is sleep apnoea?
Sleep apnoea is when your breathing stops and starts when you sleep, the NHS says.
Common symptoms include waking up a lot, loud snoring, and making gasping, snorting, or choking noises. During the day it can make you feel very tired and struggle to concentrate.
Article continues below
Without treatment it can lead to high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease, and also increases the risk of having a stroke. There are also risks associated with tiredness, such as losing concentration while driving.
Causes involve obesity, smoking and drinking alcohol, having a large neck, and suffering with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD. It is also more common in older people.
If you think you may be suffering with sleep apnoea, speak to your GP, who will be able to refer you to your local health board's sleep team.

Caitlin Clark sets new record for most expensive card for female athlete

Caitlin Clark's 2024 Rookie Royalty WNBA Flawless Logowoman 1/1 card sold for $660,000 on Thursday night, becoming the most expensive card of a female athlete sold at public auction. Considered among the best Clark cards created to date, the sale passes the previous record of $366,000 paid for Clark's 2024 Panini Prizm WNBA Signatures Gold Vinyl 1/1 PSA 10 at Goldin in March. Sold in Fanatics Collect's July Premier Auction, the card entered extended bidding at $336,000, including buyer's premium, before a flurry of bids drove the price toward a stunning result. Signed and inscribed with her rookie season scoring total, the card features a Logowoman patch seen on a WNBA jersey. Logowoman patches, similar to the NBA's Logoman cards, are among the most coveted pieces of memorabilia in the trading card hobby. The top-selling item from the auction, the Flawless Logowoman was one of seven Clark cards to sell at Fanatics Collect on Thursday night, and one of four cards to sell from Panini America's ultra high-end 2024 Rookie Royalty WNBA set. Rookie Royalty WNBA made a shocking debut in June when hobby boxes sold directly from Panini via Dutch auction with a starting price of $30,000 per two-card box. The product eventually sold out after reaching the floor price of $3,000. Though Clark's Flawless Logowoman 1/1 was expected to challenge her public record, the final price is an impressive result for both her market and the hobby at large. According to data tool Card Ladder, Clark has now had 10 sales top $100,000 or more at public auction. Including Thursday night's results, Clark has now had 14 cards sell at public auction for more than her entire 2025 salary of $78,066 with the Indiana Fever. According to Spotrac, the sale of the Flawless Logowoman 1/1 also eclipses the value of Clark's current four-year, $338,056 contract with the Fever. The record-breaking sale of Clark's Flawless Logowoman 1/1 will be closely followed by a similar example selling at Goldin on Aug. 9. Included in Goldin's July Elite Auction, the Immaculate Logowoman 1/1 is also among the best Clark cards created to date. As of Thursday night, the Immaculate Logowoman had reached $180,000, before buyer's premium, on 17 bids. Ben Burrows is a reporter and editor for cllct, the premier company for collectible culture. Nico Iamaleava says transfer to UCLA from Tennessee was about being closer to family, not money

Nico Iamaleava sought to downplay the significance of NIL money in his transfer to UCLA at Big Ten media day Thursday. The former Tennessee QB said he had always wanted to play closer to his home in California and didn't feel comfortable after 'false reports' had emerged at Tennessee this spring. 'Just false reports that made me not feel comfortable in the position that I was in,' Iamaleava said. 'But in the back of my head I always wanted to come back home. And be closer to my mom, closer to my dad. And you know, just have my family, their support at our games. In our Samoan culture we're always together, and I think that's the main thing for me, the driving factor for me to come back home.' In an immediate follow-up about the 'false reports' Iamaleava referenced, he said they weren't about an alleged NIL dispute with the school. 'Just false stuff about whether it was a financial thing or not,' Iamaleava said. 'My driving factor to come back home was my family, and I hope every Tennessee fan understands that. That it was really one of the hardest decisions that I've had to make. But I had to do what was best for me and my family, and ultimately I wanted to come back home and be closer to my family." Iamaleava sat out portions of Tennessee's spring practices amid reports he was looking to redo his name, image and likeness deal with the school. His father disputed the idea Iamaleava was looking for more money, and the QB entered the transfer portal April 12. As Iamaleava entered the portal, Tennessee coach Josh Heupel said after his team's spring game 'there's no one that's bigger than the Power T. And that includes me.' Iamaleava's appearance at media day Thursday led to his first public comments about his transfer to UCLA. The former five-star recruit chose the Bruins after his younger brother de-committed from Arkansas to go to UCLA. Iamaleava's transfer then led to UCLA QB Joey Aguilar's departure for Knoxville. The former Appalachian State QB transferred to UCLA earlier in the offseason with the goal of being the Bruins' starting QB in 2025. Once Iamaleava arrived, Aguilar left for Tennessee as the Vols were suddenly in need of a starting quarterback. In his lone season as Tennessee's starter, Iamaleava was 213-of-334 passing for 2,616 yards and 19 TDs with just five interceptions. Eleven of those 19 TD passes came in Tennessee's four non-conference games. He had eight TD passes and three interceptions over eight SEC games and the College Football Playoff. In UT's loss to Ohio State in the first round of the playoff, he was 14-of-31 for 104 yards.

AM Best Downgrades Credit Ratings of Construction Guarantee Cooperative

HONG KONG, July 25, 2025--(BUSINESS WIRE)--AM Best has downgraded the Financial Strength Rating to A (Excellent) from A+ (Superior) and the Long-Term Issuer Credit Rating to a+ (Excellent) from "aa-" (Superior) of Construction Guarantee Cooperative (CG) (South Korea). The outlooks of these Credit Ratings (ratings) have been revised to stable from negative. The ratings reflect CG's balance sheet strength, which AM Best assesses as strongest, as well as its adequate operating performance, favourable business profile and appropriate enterprise risk management (ERM). The rating downgrades reflect the revision of AM Best's assessment of CG's operating performance to adequate from strong, following a deterioration in its underwriting profitability in recent years, which AM Best expects will remain pressured over the short to medium term. The company recorded two consecutive years of underwriting losses in 2023 and 2024, in addition to the first half of 2025. This was due to a material rise in guarantee claims payment and a sizeable provision of guarantee claims reserves from liquidity pressure on an increased number of its members amid a downturn in the domestic construction industry. In addition, CG's increased exposure to market risk since 2022 under its realigned investment strategy has been adding additional volatility to its profitability. Despite some mitigative measures by the company, its performance is likely to remain moderate given the ongoing uncertainties on the industry recovery and the general time lag between the construction industry cycle and performance of the guarantee business. CG's risk-adjusted capitalisation is expected to remain comfortably at the strongest level, as measured by Best's Capital Adequacy Ratio (BCAR), underpinned by a large capital base of KRW 6.8 trillion (USD 4.6 billion) as of year-end 2024, extremely low underwriting leverage, favourable liquidity and a debt-free position. AM Best also expects that the company may receive financial support from the government in case of a significantly stressed scenario. Established under the Korea Construction Financial Cooperative Law, CG is a government-designated surety underwriter for general contractors and plays a key supporting role in implementing government policies related to the construction industry in South Korea. CG has the largest share of the construction surety segment and a strong membership base, which represents the majority of the general contractors in the country. The majority of project owners of CG's surety bonds are central and local governments, which adds stability to its overall business volume. Meanwhile, the company has been diversifying its business gradually to overseas surety business and construction-related insurance products over the past few years to alleviate its concentration risk within the domestic construction surety segment. Negative rating actions could occur if there is a significant deterioration in CG's balance sheet strength fundamentals. Positive rating actions could occur if the cooperative's operating performance demonstrates consistently strong and resilient results under various conditions of the overall economy and construction industry with mitigated investment volatility to support the bottom-line. Ratings are communicated to rated entities prior to publication. Unless stated otherwise, the ratings were not amended subsequent to that communication.
