➤ In 2023, Niyati Chhaya, Ram Jayaraman, and Rajeev Pathak came together to make finance and accounting smarter, faster, and autonomous. Rajeev, who had worked at Wipro and founded a learning platform called Funtoot (acquired by Reliance's Embibe in 2019), had noted that
clunky accounting processes had distracted him from building his business.
And he kept coming back to one question: 'What if I can simplify these functions?'

grown up watching his father, a chartered accountant, struggle with outdated
finance systems,
and be buried in manual work. Ram too had been at Wipro, and had later joined Rajeev in Funtoot. Niyati had been an AI research scientist at Adobe for more than 10 years, and had then joined the faculty at IIIT Hyderabad.
She wanted to do more than research papers
– she wanted to see her ideas powering products, and creating real impact.

1 2 Mohali: The Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (Gmada)'s ambitious land pooling scheme has faced a near-complete rejection from local landowners, with only 15 villagers out of nearly 8,000 opting in, despite a two-month window to acquire 2,600 acres of land. The scheme has sparked widespread protests among farmers across several villages in Mohali district. Gmada had invited applications from landowners under its land pooling policy to acquire land across various sectors for commercial, institutional, industrial, and residential development. However, the scheme received a poor response, with farmers outright rejecting the proposal. "We have a very poor response to the land pooling option. We are trying to convince landowners, but only 15 have come forward so far," said a senior Gmada officer, requesting anonymity. As per the plan, 236 acres will be acquired in Sector 87 for commercial purposes, 313 acres in Sector 84 for institutional projects, and 321 acres in Sectors 101 to 103 for industrial use. Gmada has already stated that no Change of Land Use (CLU) permissions will be granted to private developers in the designated areas. Several unauthorised colonies have already sprung up across nearly 50 acres in villages such as Daun, Raipur, Behlolpur, Barmajra, Tarauli, and Jhampur—mostly carved out of agricultural land without official approvals. The GMADA chief administrator has directed officials to submit a report within two days fixing responsibility for these violations and to use Google satellite imagery to detect and act against illegal constructions. Meanwhile, farmers from villages including Patton, Siaou, Badi, Kishanpura, Kurdi, and Matran have submitted a memorandum to chief minister Bhagwant Mann through Gmada's chief administrator, opposing the land pooling policy. "Gmada is offering compensation far below market rates. We are the rightful tenants of our villages and will not part with our land. We refuse to register our land in favour of the government," said Harvinder Singh Lambardar, speaking on behalf of the protesting farmers. The policy has triggered strong resistance across the region, with farmers alleging that it favours large landowners while marginal landholders — particularly those with plots under five acres — stand to lose the most. Kolhapur among 59 districts in India with huge export potential:Exim study
Kolhapur: Kolhapur is among 59 districts in India with untapped potential for exports, said Deepali Agarwal, deputy managing director, Export-Import (Exim) Bank, citing a study by the bank. She was speaking at a programme organised by Shiroli Manufacturers Association in Kolhapur. Agarwal said that Exim Bank data showed that major exported products from Kolhapur in 2024-25 were textiles, machine gears, auto components, jewelry, refined sugar, rice, and casting. "According to a study undertaken by Exim Bank, less than 2% of the districts in India contribute to around 40% of India's exports, and hence there remains significant scope of tapping the 'missing middle export districts. "The study identified 'missing middle export districts' whose exports are between US$ 1 billion and US$ 5 billion. In fact, there are around 59 districts in India out of 750 plus districts that fall under the bracket of 'missing middle export districts', one of them being Kolhapur," said Agarwal. "The exports from Kolhapur saw a decline after the export ban on sugar; however, Kolhapur's exports increased from Rs 58.9 billion in 2023-24 to Rs 61.8 billion in 2024-25. The data showed that exports from Kolhapur witnessed diversification. In 2024-25, the major exported products from Kolhapur were textiles, machine gears, auto components, jewelry, refined sugar, rice, and casting articles. Together, the top 10 products constituted about 42% of Kolhapur's total merchandise exports, amounting to Rs 25.7 billion during 2024-25," said Agarwal. She mentioned that silver jewelry from Hupari in Kolhapur is also in huge demand in India and abroad. The Kolhapuri Saaj is a specialty of Kolhapur and is exported along with other silver ornaments and idols in silver to countries like the US and Australia. The top official of Exim Bank said that the bank has designed a grassroots initiative and development (GRID) programme to harness the export potential of tier-II cities like Kolhapur. She said that under the programme, the bank supports artisans, craftsmen, weavers, clusters, self-help groups, farmers' producer organisations, and micro-enterprises. Exim Bank also provided assistance to SMAK to set up precision 3D scanning solution and casting simulation technology facility at the common facility centre at SMAK, which will tremendously help small-scale manufacturing units.

Legacy waste processing nears completion at Perungudi landfill
Chennai: At least 26 lakh metric tonnes of legacy waste were processed out of a total of 30 lakh metric tonnes through the biomining process at the Perungudi dump yard. The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) plans to complete the entire project by the end of September, before the onset of the Northeast monsoon. A proposal will be submitted to the state govt to set up an integrated waste processing facility in the Tambaram Corporation area, which will serve both the GCC and the corporation. "Of the total 30 lakh metric tonnes of waste at the landfill, approximately 26 lakh metric tonnes of legacy waste were processed. Although it was initially expected to be completed by the end of this month, there was some delay on the contractor's part. Therefore, it is now expected to be completed by the end of Sept. Technical inputs were also obtained from Anna University and IIT Chennai for subsurface biomining," said GCC commissioner J Kumaragurubaran. "The groundwater was already contaminated due to the legacy waste dumped in the landfill over the years. If the reclaimed land were maintained as a marshland, it would help store excess rainwater during the monsoon. Instead, the corporation has proposed facilities that would further threaten the livelihood of residents," said A Francis, of the Federation of Thuraipakkam Residents Welfare Association.
