De Minaur battles to DC Open crown
But Davidovich Fokina -- chasing the first ATP title of his career after losing in three previous final appearances -- failed to capitalise on his hefty lead.
The Spaniard appeared to tighten when serving for the match at 5-3 up to allow De Minaur to claw it back to 5-4.
But Davidovich Fokina responded to that missed opportunity by then earning three match points on De Minaur's serve in the next game.
Yet once again, the Spaniard was unable to take advantage and De Minaur survived to hold serve and level the match at 5-5.
The next two games went on serve to set up the tie break and De Minaur was quickly in control, sealing victory on the first of three match points with an ace, to settle a 3hr 2mins slugfest.
De Minaur said he had never doubted his ability to turn around the final.
"I just kind of knew I could do it," De Minaur said in his on-court interview. "I just backed myself to commit no matter what, and if I lost this match, it was going to be on my terms.
"I've had a couple of brutal ones not go go my way, so I'm glad this one went my way," the 26-year-old from New South Wales said.
The win was another agonizing setback for Davidovich Fokina, who had already reached -- and lost -- two other finals this season.
The defeat echoed his loss in the final at Delray Beach in February, when he was unable to convert two match points before losing to Miomir Kecmanovic.

She won twice at the Australian Open but retired after the first set in her third match with the same injury. Osaka won her first WTA title since the 2021 Australian Open in May at the L'Open 35 de Saint Malo, but fell in the first round of the French Open and the third round at Wimbledon.

Second Guardians pitcher on leave under MLB gambling probe
Clase becomes the second Guardians player placed on paid leave as part of the sports betting probe, with starting pitcher Luis Ortiz going on the list July 3 and having his leave extended 10 days ago to August 31. "Per an agreement with the MLBPA (players union), Cleveland Guardians pitcher Emmanuel Clase has been placed on non-disciplinary paid leave through games on August 31 while MLB continues its sports betting investigation," an MLB statement said. "We will not comment further until the investigation has been completed." Clase, a 27-year-old Dominican right-hander in his fifth season with the Guardians. The three-time American League All-Star has led the league in saves in each of the past three campaigns and this year has 24 saves and a 5-3 record with a 3.23 earned-run average and 47 strikeouts over 47 1/3 innings over 48 appearances. Ortiz, a 26-year-old Dominican right-hander obtained in a trade with Pittsburgh last December, is 4-9 this season with a 4.36 earned-run average with 96 strikeouts in 16 appearances this season. Both Ortiz and Clase are allowed contact with the organization while on leave, but they are not permitted at team facilities. The Guardians said no other players or team personnel are expected to be impacted by the investigation. "We have been informed that no additional players or club personnel are expected to be impacted," the team said in a statement. "The Guardians are not permitted to comment further at this time and will respect the league's confidential investigative process as we continue to fully cooperate." Aussie qualifier schools young gun Fonseca in Toronto
The 24-year-old from Perth moved to 98th in the ongoing live rankings as he claimed his biggest career victory by knocking out the ATP NextGen champion from last November. Schoolkate, son of a tennis coach, won his first match over a top-50 opponent on his sixth attempt as he dealt out the number 49 teenager from Brazil.
