Grab filled focaccia, pintxos and more at an Italian-Spanish deli opposite South Melbourne Market
Nicholas Totos spent his childhood assisting his family at their South Melbourne Market stall, Emerald Hill Deli – where he was first given the moniker of 'deli boy' by local customers. Now, he's taken that name and opened his own shop specialising in home-style panini and open-faced sandwiches opposite the market, alongside his business partner Andreas Londono.
Deli Boy's menu takes influence from both Italy and Spain, including the Basque region where Londono has family. Creamy Basque cheesecake is made in house, while French pastries are outsourced from wholesale Ivanhoe bakery The French Breakfast Bakehouse.
Fluffy Zeally Bay focaccia is filled with deli goods imported from Italy and fresh produce from the South Melbourne Market, like mortadella and stracciatella packed in with truffle honey-glazed eggplant, or a smoked ham and gruyere number that takes the classic ham and cheese sanger to new heights. Ready-made pintxos (Spanish bar snacks), beer and wines by the glass are also available, perfect for summer drinks in the dog-friendly courtyard or at the sunny streetside seating.

Loulou Bistro opens at Martin Place with a steak frites sandwich and happy-hour snails
During weekday happy hour (4-7pm) there will be $2 escargots and oysters, while the lunch and dinner carte lists Toulouse sausage with pomme puree, a mushroom and truffle vol-au-vent, seafood platters and French onion soup. Steak frites are having a bigger moment than usual in the CBD, with 24 York opening on July 23 and taking inspiration from Le Relais de l'Entrecote in France, which has successfully leant on the dish for more than half a century. Bouillon l'Entrecote at Circular Quay is another go-to venue for French-style steak and chips. 'Our focus won't be on steak,' says Parker of the opening menu at Loulou Martin Place. However, with steak frites one of the best sellers at the Milsons Point restaurant, it still features on the menu, along with a version encased in a baguette. 'We want to bring that feeling of a neighbourhood restaurant across to the city,' says Parker said. Plans are underway for the brand's further expansion, too. Later this year, a fast version of Loulou Bistro will open at the Qantas Domestic Terminal at Sydney Airport.

Parents buy their adult sons a $1 million inner west pad at auction
A mum and dad paid $1,088,000 at auction on Saturday for an apartment in Forest Lodge that their two adult sons will live in. The two-bedroom property at 3/276 Bridge Road was guided at $950,000 and the reserve was set at $1 million. There is no legal requirement for a vendor's reserve to be in line with their property's price guide. There were four registered bidders and three took part. Bidding opened at $975,000 and rose in varying increments. The property was one of 479 scheduled to go to auction in Sydney on Saturday. The top-floor unit is located in a boutique block and features timber floors, decorative fireplaces and French doors that lead out to a balcony. The buyers sold the family home in Stanmore and recently bought in Kangaroo Valley. Their sons, both in their twenties, will live in the Forest Lodge unit and pay off the mortgage. 'It's so hard for young people to get on the property ladder,' the boys' mother said after the auction. 'The boys acknowledge that they're incredibly lucky.' The parents outbid a first home buyer couple from the inner city. Records show the property last sold for $812,000 in 2018.
