Saks Global outlines ‘data-driven' strategy for menswear at Pitti Uomo

Fashion United19-06-2025

Saks Global has outlined a new 'data-driven' strategy for its menswear offering. The luxury retail group, formed of Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus, among other department stores, revealed its intention to tap into identified growth opportunities at the ongoing Pitti Uomo 108 in Florence, Italy.
Much of this centres around zoning in on untapped customer segments in the luxury menswear market, particularly through a focus on rising trends like the 'evolution of masculinity' and casualisation, as well as the increased spending power of Gen Z and Millennials.
According to the newly established group, which was formed after Saks acquired its rival Neiman Marcus Group last year, it holds a 50 percent market share in the US luxury menswear sector, which it hopes to leverage as it looks to unlock further growth potential.
It is exactly this that was noted by chief brand partnerships and buying officer, Paolo Riva, who said such potential is being 'fueled by a new era of style-conscious consumers with a deep appreciation for quality, craftsmanship and personal expression'.
Riva added: "Our strategy is focused on cultivating and growing our customer base and merchandising for a new customer segment, while continuing to meet the needs of our established clients."
While in-person experiences, like stylists, will be utilised to both inspire and educate menswear customers, the strategy also puts emphasis on data and AI as part of Saks Global's wider 'The Art of You' vision, aimed at heightening the inclusion of technology across its business.

Claire's reportedly mulling sale as US tariffs take hold

Jewellery retailer Claire's is believed to be seeking a potential buyer for either part or all of the company as impact from US tariffs takes hold. The retailer has reportedly appointed bankers at Houlihan Lokey Inc. to oversee the process, unnamed sources for Bloomberg have stated. According to the media outlet, a sale could include Claire's store networks in North America and Europe. In a pitch sent to potential buyers and seen by Bloomberg, Claire's said it had recorded 1.3 billion dollars in sales last year, with its 1,537 stores in North America contributing around 720 million dollars to the sum. The company, however, is facing a 500 million dollar loan repayment due in December 2026, and had chosen to defer interest payment on the debt to conserve cash, Bloomberg previously reported. Claire's has been owned by former creditors since its bankruptcy in 2018. At the time, investment firms, including Elliott Management Corp. and Monarch Alternative Capital LP, stepped in to rescue the jewellers. Alongside concerns over tariffs, Claire's has faced heightened competition in the market, and as such has continued to adjust and readjust its strategy in order to cater to the evolving demands of a Gen Z and Gen Alpha audience. Such efforts involved introducing a new brand identity in 2023, as well as expanding shop-in-shop partnerships with department stores and retailers in the UK and US. The company is currently being led in an interim capacity by Chris Cramer, who temporarily stepped into the helm position in June 2024, adding to his current dual roles of chief financial and operating officer. FashionUnited has contacted Claire's with a request to comment.

Bumble sacks hundreds of staff as Gen Z ditches dating apps to find love the old fashioned way

Online dating service Bumble has revealed plans to cut a third of its staff as Gen Z have started to ditch online dating in favour of finding love the old fashioned way. The company behind the UK's third most popular dating app, has reportedly told investors that 240 jobs could be axed in order to save $40 million (£29.4m) a year, with the restructure expected to cost the company $18m. The company has warned that the industry had reached an 'inflection point', weeks after it revealed falling sales, The Telegraph reported. Dating apps such as Tinder, Hinge and Bumble peaked during the pandemic when social distancing and isolation made it difficult for young people to meet. Since 2020, Bumble's share price has plunged 92 per cent. Tinder's owner Match Group has fallen 68 per cent over the same period. Whitney Wolfe Herd, the Bumble chief executive who also co-founded Tinder, told staff on Wednesday: 'The reality is, we need to take decisive action to restructure to build a company that's resilient, intentional and ready for the next decade. 'We've reset our strategy, and are going back to a start-up mentality – rooted in an ownership mindset and team structures designed for faster, more meaningful execution.' It follows warnings from Tinder that Gen Z were seeking more authentic ways to find romance. Ofcom revealed last November that usage of the most popular dating apps had fallen last year, as Bumble lost 368,000 users, around 2.3 per cent. The watchdog said: 'Some analysts speculate that for younger people, particularly Gen Z, the novelty of dating apps is wearing off.' A study by Ipsos found that 63 per cent of men and 66 per cent of women in Gen Z prefer meeting potential partners in real life. Just 10 per cent of men and 7 per cent of women preferred dating apps. Women account for just 35 per cent of users of dating apps, according to Ofcom, with many avoiding the apps for reasons of safety and unwanted contact. Researchers are suggesting that users are now turning to traditional methods of meeting through sports clubs or mutual friends, or even newer methods such as gaming. Hobby apps including Strava are also being used to find potential partners.
