Garden competitions look for new green thumbs in Yellowwood Park
IN a bid to restore community pride and beautify Yellowwood Park and Woodhaven, the Yellowwood Park and Woodhaven Ratepayers and Residents Association has revived its much-loved garden competition. Organised by the association's environmental officer Ayanda Ndlela, the initiative encourages residents to beautify their gardens, especially the verges outside their homes.

Unlike in past years when residents would need to nominate themselves to take part, the format has been redesigned to be more inclusive and accessible.
'We found only residents who had spent decades maintaining their verges were entering and as much as their gardens are beautiful, it actually ended up discouraging new entrants who thought that they could never get a chance,' said Ndlela.
Yellowwood Park and Woodhaven has been divided into 12 precincts, each of which has its own co-ordinator. The co-ordinators, who already roam their area for municipal issues, also now monitor gardens and verges. The co-ordinators take note of not only the best maintained gardens, but most improved garden spaces.
This latest honour goes to Muziwandile Gwambe, who has lived in the area for four years. Gwambe, who does his own gardening and cares for verges on his own, said he began working on his garden as soon as he moved in. 'It took a lot of hard work to redo the place. I've had a green thumb for most of my life and I hope I can pass that down to my children,' said Gwambe.
Gwambe was also rewarded for going the extra mile by creating and maintaining a beautiful, landscaped display on the verge opposite his property.
Kishan Singh, chairperson of the association, said the competition plays a critical role in community engagement. 'If we could have more people in the community doing what Gwambe is doing, imagine how even more pretty our already beautiful community could be,' said Singh.
Ndlela said the association is open to more sponsorship to keep their garden competition going. Currently the prizes acquired include a R250 Pavilion Shopping Centre voucher and a gym voucher.

School calendar: June-July holidays start TODAY
The good news – is it (?) – for parents is that there's no need to drop off children at school for the next three weeks. It does of course mean finding ways to entertain them after schools around the country broke up for their June-July holidays on Friday, 27 June. The Department of Basic Education (DBE) has confirmed that pupils will return to their desks on Tuesday, 22 July for Term 3. That means a June-July holiday period of 24 days in total, comprising three full weeks plus one extra day – and weekends. The 2025 school year is divided into four terms: Term 1: 15 January to 28 March 15 January to 28 March Term 2: 8 April to 27 June 8 April to 27 June Term 3: 22 July to 3 October 22 July to 3 October Term 4: 13 October to 10 December Prior to 2024, there was a difference in the term dates for inland and coastal schools. In 2024 that changed to a calendar that was identical for all provinces. This remains the case in 2025. The 2025 academic year will consist of 200 school days. Terms 1 and 2 will have 52 days, Term 3 will be the longest at 53 days, while Term 4 will be the shortest with just 43 days. Randburg braces for major water maintenance impact
Planned maintenance on Rand Water's Eikenhof and Zwartkopjes systems from 30 June to 2 July is expected to disrupt water supply across Johannesburg, including Randburg and surrounding suburbs. According to Johannesburg Water spokesperson Nombuso Shabalala, Randburg is one of the areas that will be affected by the maintenance. 'Arrangements will be made for alternative supply through roaming and stationary tankers, and residents are encouraged to store water in advance.' In Ward 102, Councillor Lucinda Harman confirmed that clinics, hospitals, and retirement homes will receive top priority. 'Tankers will only start roaming after 24 hours. Please store water and avoid unnecessary usage. Schools are on holiday, and shopping centres are being monitored too,' she said.
