Several MPs of the INDIA bloc parties, including Congress parliamentary party chairperson Sonia Gandhi , protested in the Parliament House complex for the eighth consecutive day on Thursday against the Election Commission 's voter roll revision in Bihar, and demanded its rollback.Ahead of the day's proceedings in Parliament, Sonia Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, and other opposition MPs raised slogans and protested against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar.There was a huge banner in front of them which read 'SIR- Loktantra Pe Vaar' as they lined up near the steps of the Makar Dwar of Parliament and staged a protest for the eighth consecutive day.With 'Stop SIR' placards along with posters, alleging collusion between EC and the government, in hand, several MPs of the opposition, including those of the Congress, DMK, TMC, Samajwadi Party, RJD and Left parties, participated in the protest and raised slogans.The opposition has been protesting in both Houses of Parliament against the SIR, alleging the EC's exercise was aimed at " disenfranchising voters " in Bihar ahead of the Assembly elections. They have been demanding a discussion on the issue in both Houses.

Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann condoles demise of Satyapal Malik
Chandigarh: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Tuesday condoled the demise of former Jammu and Kashmir governor Satyapal Malik. Malik died on Tuesday at a hospital in Delhi after a prolonged illness, his personal staff said. He was 79. In his condolence message, Mann said he was sad to hear the news of the demise of Satyapal Malik. "He always gave priority to the issues of farmers and the general public and fearlessly raised the voice of truth," Mann said in a social media post in Punjabi. Senior Congress leader and leader of opposition in the Punjab Assembly Partap Singh Bajwa too expressed grief over Malik's death. "Deeply saddened by the passing of Shri Satyapal Malik Ji, former Governor and a seasoned public servant. His contributions to Indian politics and governance will always be remembered. Heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones," Bajwa in a post on X. Punjab Congress chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring also expressed grief over the death. "The news of the demise of former Governor Chaudhary Satyapal Singh Malik ji is extremely saddening. He was a leader who fearlessly expressed his views and held clear opinions in the interest of the nation. His contributions will always be remembered, said Warring. Akal Takht officiating Jathedar Giani Kuldip Singh Gargaj too expressed deep sorrow over the demise of the former J-K governor. Gargaj said that Malik fearlessly raised his voice for Punjab and especially for the Sikh community'a contribution that will never be forgotten. In a statement, Gargaj noted that during the farmers' agitation on the borders of Delhi, Malik had strongly spoken in favour of the farmers' rights and held the government accountable. Malik, who had also held the positions of governor of Goa, Bihar, Meghalaya, and Odisha, besides being a member of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha in his long political career, died at 1.12 pm at the Ram Manohar Lohia hospital here. He was in the ICU of the hospital for a long time, getting treatment for various ailments, the staff said. In his gubernatorial role at Jammu and Kashmir, Malik oversaw the abrogation of Article 370 and the bifurcation of the state into two Union Territories on August 5, 2019.

Shibu Soren cremated at native village Nemra
The mortal remains of former Jharkhand Chief Minister Shibu Soren were consigned to flames by his elder son and Chief Minister Hemant Soren at their native village Nemra in Ramgarh district. People from near and far thronged the village to catch a last glimpse of the leader, who was fondly known as 'Dishom Guru' by the masses. His body was laid on a flower-decked charpoy at his ancestral home in the village, in adherence to full tribal customs. Near and dear ones queued up to offer shrouds, chadar, shawls, and bouquets. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and party leader Rahul Gandhi also travelled to the village to attend the funeral of the veteran tribal leader. As the body was carried to the village, supporters and local residents lined both sides of the road in Ranchi to pay their last respects. Slogans of 'Guruji amar rahe [long live Guruji]' were raised by mourners. The mortal remains of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) co-founder Shibu Soren were also kept in the Jharkhand Assembly, where Governor Santosh Gangwar and Speaker Rabindranath Mahato paid tributes. Union Ministers Jual Oram, Annapurna Devi and Sanjay Seth paid homage at the Assembly complex. State ministers Irfan Ansari, Dipika Pandey Singh, Shilpi Neha Tirkey and several legislators, cutting across party lines, also offered tributes. Bihar's Purnia Independent MP Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav, who paid homage, demanded that the Bharat Ratna be conferred on Shibu Soren in recognition of his contribution to the upliftment of tribal communities. Earlier in the day, Hemant Soren shared an emotional tribute to his father, who passed away in Delhi on Monday (August 4, 2025), through a message on social media platform X. In a post on X, Mr. Soren said he was going through the toughest days of his life as he had lost not only his father but also a pillar of Jharkhand's soul. 'I didn't just call him 'Baba'. He was my guide, the root of my thoughts, and that forest-like shade that protected thousands and lakhs of Jharkhandis from the scorching sun and injustice,' Mr. Soren said. The 81-year-old former Union Minister had passed away at the Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, where he had been undergoing treatment for kidney-related issues for over a month. Mr. Soren further said that his father's beginnings, whom he called 'Baba', were very humble. 'Born in that small house in Nemra village, where there was poverty, there was hunger, but there was courage. In his childhood, he lost his father. The exploitation of the landlords gave him a fire that made him a fighter for his entire life. I have seen him ploughing the fields, sitting among the people, not just giving speeches, but living the sorrows of the people,' Mr. Soren said in the post. He added, 'In my childhood, when I asked him: 'Baba, why do people call you Dishom Guru?' He would smile and say: 'Because, son, I only understood their pain and made their fight my own'. That title was not written in any book, nor was it given by Parliament — it came from the hearts of Jharkhand's people. 'Dishom' means society, 'Guru' means the one who shows the way.' Shibu Soren had played a key role in the creation of the separate State of Jharkhand. Mr. Soren noted that his father not only showed the way, but also taught how to walk. He recalled that he had always seen him struggling and taking on the mightiest. 'I was scared, but Baba was never afraid. He would say: 'If standing against injustice is a crime, then I will be guilty again and again.' No book can explain Baba's struggle. It was in his sweat, in his voice, and in the cracked heels covered by his sandals. When Jharkhand became a State, his dream came true, but he never considered power an achievement,' Mr. Soren said. He asserted that Jharkhand was not a throne for his father, but the identity of his people. 'Today, Baba is no longer here, but his voice echoes within me. I learned to fight from you, Baba, not to bow down. I learned to love Jharkhand from you without any selfishness. Now you are not among us, but you are in every path of Jharkhand. The dream you saw is now my promise. I will not let Jharkhand bow down; I will not let your name fade away. Your struggle will not remain incomplete,' Mr. Soren said. On Monday, leaders cutting across party lines paid tribute to Shibu Soren. President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, and Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge visited Sir Ganga Ram Hospital and paid tributes to the veteran tribal leader. 'Baba, now you rest. You have fulfilled your duty, now we must walk in your footsteps. Jharkhand will remain indebted to you. I, your son, will keep your promise. Long live Veer Shibu - Long live, long live! May Dishom Guru remain immortal. Hail Jharkhand,' Mr. Soren said at the end of the message.

Reservation agitation reaches Delhi; CM to lead dharna at Jantar Mantar today
The fight for BC reservations has now reached the national capital and Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy is all set to lead a massive protest at Jantar Mantar in Delhi on Wednesday, demanding the passage of bills ensuring 42% reservations for Backward Classes in local body elections, education and employment sectors. The Chief Minister and his Cabinet colleagues reached New Delhi on Tuesday evening while a special train left from Cherlapally station on Monday morning. The CM and the Ministers were welcomed with banners and posters hung across Telangana Bhavan in New Delhi and also at several places in the national capital. To intensify pressure on the Centre, CM Revanth Reddy will be staging a dharna today at Jantar Mantar. He will be joined by Deputy CM Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, TPCC president Mahesh Kumar Goud, several ministers, MLAs, MLCs, corporation chairpersons and leaders from BC communities. Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi is expected to attend the protest and extend his solidarity. Leaders from INDIA Bloc parties, including the Samajwadi Party, DMK, Left parties, Shiv Sena (UBT) and NCP (SP), will also take part and express their support for the ongoing struggle under the leadership of CM Revanth Reddy. Inspired by the slogan 'Jitni Aabadi, Utna Hissedari' (Equal share for equal population) coined by Mr. Rahul Gandhi, the Congress-led Telangana government conducted the Social, Economic, Educational, Employment and Political Caste Survey (SEEEPC) within 18 months of coming to power. Based on its findings, the State passed bills in the Legislative Assembly to provide 42% reservations to BCs. These now await approval from the Central government. Congress leaders say that BJP leaders who had supported these bills in the Telangana Assembly are now backtracking and using Muslims as an excuse to derail BC reservations by indulging in emotional politics. The Chief Minister will be in New Delhi for three days and has also sought an appointment with the President of India. The Telangana delegation will also meet leaders of other parties during their stay.
