Karori kindness: Family of elderly woman hit by car seeking good Samaritans Ruth and Justin
'Mum had a knee replacement in October, so she has only been mobile for about eight weeks. She was really excited about using her new knee and getting out walking,' said Manjit.
'She was crossing Beauchamp St when she was hit… she apparently bounced off the bonnet and landed near the sidewalk.'
A number of people rushed to help Nain. Someone called Manjit and her husband and said the older woman had fallen.
They ran to the scene from their nearby home.
'We ran out and saw a few people gathered and Mum lying on the street. That's when we found out she had been hit by the car,' Manjit said.
'She was holding her neck and not screaming, but she was grimacing and in a lot of pain. She wanted to lie down but a lovely lady called Ruth was supporting her from behind so she did not move.
'My husband took over from Ruth… then a man called Justin came out and he said he had seen it all and explained it to us.'
Police and paramedics arrived soon after, and Nain was lifted into the ambulance.
'That's when I knew her injuries were much more severe. She was screaming,' said Manjit.
At the hospital, it was confirmed Nain had four fractures to three vertebrae in her neck, a fractured hip and broken ribs.
'Had Ruth not held Mum's neck still… she would have been in a wheelchair, or even dead,' said Manjit.
'It was frightening.'
Nain is still in ICU and in a lot of pain. She is awake and talking some of the time but heavy pain medication means sometimes she is not lucid and at those times she is 'very, very frightened'.
Manjit said Nain kept forgetting she had been in an accident and then when she remembered she became upset.
'That's normal though, between her being almost 80 and the horrific injuries… the nights are the worst,' she said.
'She is so scared… and then I have my 87-year-old dad who also got a huge fright seeing his wife like this.
'In a moment, our lives were altered forever.'
Manjit said the ambulance driver Andy was 'fantastic'.
She also wanted to thank the 'extraordinary kindness and quick thinking of Ruth and Justin'.
She said the pair gave Nain 'the best possible chance in those critical early moments'.
'Their actions not only protected her from further injury but quite possibly saved her life,' she said.
'We are deeply, deeply grateful.'
Manjit wanted to thank the pair personally and has reached out to the Karori community via Facebook to find them.
She also wanted to thank others at the scene, including those who called for help, rushed out with blankets and offered words of comfort.
'Please know how much your presence meant,' Manjit wrote on Facebook.
'In such a frightening and vulnerable moment, the compassion shown by strangers has stayed with us and truly lifted our hearts.'
The family were also thinking of the driver.
Manjit said the woman was 'very shaken'.

Acts meant victim lived ‘in constant state of fear'
A Dunedin man who spat in his partner's face and head-butted her went to on to compete in a charity boxing event two days later. Joshua Marc Hotton, 33, appeared in the Dunedin District Court last week, where he was jailed for 15 months (on two assaults and two breaches of a protection order) for prolonged and persistent controlling behaviour, which left the victim "living in a constant state of fear". Judge Hermann Retzlaff was particularly struck by the "cruelty" in some of the defendant's acts, which included threats against his then-partner's dog, claims he had hacked a social-media account to monitor her conversations and an incident in which he filmed the victim during an assault. Hotton first appeared in court on November 28, the day after police had been called to his home over the first reported attack. Two days later, while on bail, he fought on the Punch With Purpose III Charity Fight Night card at the Dunedin Town Hall — an event run by Otepoti Boxing Club — and won. Organiser Chase Reihana Haley told the Otago Daily Times he became aware criminal charges had been laid against Hotton, but neither the boxer nor police would confirm the nature of the allegations. "Our kaupapa is designed around helping the community. If we were aware of the charges, I would have had to take it back to the board and sit down with the board and understand what was going on and come to an agreement ... and make a decision, but that wasn't the case," Mr Reihana Haley said. "There was a lot of people coming to watch the fight that he was booked in for, and yeah, I just had to get it over the line, really. Both him and his opponent had trained for 10 weeks and raised money to go towards local charities, and yeah, it's like we were put into a position where, you know, two days out — what do we do here?" Hotton's behaviour, detailed in court documents, became increasingly manipulative following the charity bout. He would use "offensive and threatening" language to force his partner to bend to his will, threatening to leave her dog on the road if she did not comply with his demands. In February, Hotton left her a series of recorded voice messages which featured whispered words designed to scare the woman. The following month he made claims of infidelity and told the victim he had hacked her mother's Facebook account so he could see if she was "up to something". On March 17 came the final act. The victim visited Hotton to discuss financial matters; he reacted by picking her up and slamming her to the floor repeatedly. He then knelt on her chest and slapped her face, prompting her to grab an object to defend herself. "The defendant became amused by this and started recording ... and mocking her," a police summary said. The victim read a statement in court and was commended for her bravery by Judge Retzlaff. "I tolerated manipulation disguised as love. I endured words that left bruises I couldn't show. And I walked on eggshells every single day — scared that the smallest word or glance could set him off," she said. "I was promised things would change. But they never did — they only got worse." The woman emphasised the massive resolve it took to finally involve police. "It wasn't just strength for me. It was strength for our children. For their future. So that they never have to grow up believing love looks like fear," she said. "I will not be broken. I am rebuilding. I am healing. I am still standing. I am a mother. I am a woman." , Court reporter

Woman recovering after losing arm to lion mauling at Queensland zoo
A woman who was mauled by an African lion in a "horrific" attack at a Queensland zoo remains stable in hospital after losing her arm in the incident. The woman, in her 50s, was airlifted to Brisbane's Princess Alexandra Hospital on Sunday after being bitten on the arm by the lion at Darling Downs Zoo in Pilton, a small town in Queensland's Toowoomba region. The victim lost her arm in the attack that had shocked staff at the zoo and the local community, said David Littleproud, MP for Maranoa, the federal electorate where the zoo is located. "This is a horrific incident. It is a tragedy," the Nationals leader said in a statement on Monday. A Queensland Health spokesperson told AAP on Monday the victim remained in hospital in a stable condition. ADVERTISEMENT The woman was airlifted to hospital after suffering an animal bite. (Source: Associated Press) The zoo did not immediately respond to a request for comment. It said in a Facebook post on Sunday the woman was watching animal keepers work in the "carnivore precinct" when the attack occurred. The victim was not an employee but a "much loved member of our family", it said. "This is something that she has done many, many times over the past 20 years. She is well versed in safety protocols around potentially dangerous animals. "Inexplicably, at this stage, one animal grabbed her by one arm and caused severe damage to it." The zoo, expected to reopen on Tuesday, said the lion would not be put down or punished for the attack. Queensland Police attended the scene on Sunday but said state workplace health and safety authorities were leading investigations. The family owned zoo, a major venue of its kind in regional Queensland, houses tawny lions and white lions, both species native to South Africa.

(Source: Facebook) ADVERTISEMENT A police search for Story's head has spanned Port Lincoln reserves, parks, bushland, the ocean, pier and bay areas and involved state emergency service volunteers, water police, divers and local patrols. But investigators today said the intensive search had been put on hold while police turned to reviewing a significant amount of CCTV footage to find other locations of interest. Authorities are appealing for any footage the public can share with police to progress their investigation. "Police are trying to track Tamika's movements in the week of the murder, particularly between midnight on Tuesday night and the report of the fire at 3.30pm on Thursday," SA police said in an update. "Major crime detectives have released images of the clothing she was wearing during this time in the hope that it will jog people's memories." (Source: South Australia Police ) Police were releasing details of the "horrific" crime as it was vital for the family of Story to be able to peacefully lay him to rest, Detective Superintendent Darren Fielke said. ADVERTISEMENT "We know that Tamika did not drive a vehicle and regularly walked around the township of Port Lincoln," he said. "We are appealing to anyone who can help us to identify Tamika's movements to please contact police." Police found Story's body after firefighters were called to a Flinders Highway property to investigate reports of a blaze. Chesser, who police said had been in a relationship with Story for several months, was arrested on June 19 after Story's body was found at the couple's home. She was known to walk through back streets and parks in the Port Lincoln area with her dogs. She appeared by video link in court on Friday while being held under order at a forensic mental health facility.
