Turkey detains three opposition mayors as crackdown widens beyond Istanbul

Turkish authorities detained three more mayors from the main opposition party on Saturday, according to a prosecutor's statement and media reports, expanding a months-long legal crackdown that has expanded beyond its origins in Istanbul.
The mayors of the big southern cities of Adana and Adiyaman were detained on allegations of extortion, the Istanbul chief prosecutor's office said, along with some eight other people.
Broadcaster NTV said Antalya's mayor and the deputy mayor of Istanbul's Buyukcekmece district were also detained as part of the broader investigation in which hundreds of members of the Republic People's Party (CHP), including 11 mayors previously, have been targeted since October last year.
The CHP broadly denies the charges and calls the probe politically driven, charges the government denies.
In March Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, the main political rival of President Tayyip Erdogan, was jailed pending trial on corruption charges, which he denies. That sparked the largest street protests in a decade and a sharp selloff in Turkish assets.

BEIRUT: Lebanon said three people were killed Tuesday in a strike near Tripoli that the Israeli military said targeted a Hamas, the first on the north since a November ceasefire with Hezbollah. Gaza ceasefire can be reached but may take more time, Israeli officials say Hamas claimed attacks on Israel from Lebanon during more than a year of cross-border hostilities launched by Hezbollah in October 2023 in support of its Palestinian ally. Israel has struck Hamas operatives in Lebanon, including since the ceasefire. In May, Hamas said one of its commanders was killed in a strike on the southern city of Sidon as Israel said it targeted 'the head of operations in Hamas's Western Brigade in Lebanon'. Israeli strikes on south Lebanon remain common, but raids on the north have been rare. In October, Hamas said one of its operatives was killed along with his wife and two daughters in a strike on their home in Beddawi, a Palestinian refugee camp near Tripoli. Israel's military said it targeted 'a senior member of Hamas's military wing in Lebanon'. In May, Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas visited Beirut for talks on disarming in refugee camps across Lebanon as the Beirut government seeks to impose its authority across all its territory. The Israeli military said earlier Tuesday that it had killed two Hezbollah operatives in strikes on south Lebanon a day earlier.

Top Turkish officials to visit Pakistan Wednesday, source says
ANKARA: Turkiye's foreign and defence ministers will visit Pakistan on Wednesday for talks with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to discuss bilateral ties, regional issues, and defence industry cooperation, a Turkish diplomatic source said on Tuesday. Turkiye has strong ties with Pakistan and expressed solidarity with it during its military conflict with India in May, angering India. During the visit, Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan will express Turkiye's desire to deepen ties in every field and offer Ankara's support in taking steps toward regional peace, the source said. PM Shehbaz discusses trade, regional peace with Presidents of Turkiye, Iran, Uzbekistan Fidan will stress the countries 'need to strengthen their cooperation in the defence industry,' the source said. Ankara also has cordial ties with India, but after its support for Pakistan, small Indian grocery shops and major online fashion retailers boycotted Turkish products, while New Delhi also cancelled Turkiye-based aviation service provider Celebi clearance over 'national security' reasons.

Five Israeli soldiers killed in Gaza combat
OCCUPIED JERUSALEM: Five Israeli soldiers were killed in combat in the Gaza Strip, the military said Tuesday, in one of the deadliest days for Israeli forces in the Palestinian territory this year. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu lamented a 'difficult morning' as he visited Washington for talks with US President Donald Trump, who is pressing for a ceasefire in the more than 21-month war. 'All of Israel bows its head and mourns the fall of our heroic soldiers, who risked their lives in the battle to defeat Hamas and free all our hostages,' Netanyahu posted on X. The five soldiers aged between 20 and 28 'fell during combat in the northern Gaza Strip', the Israeli military said. Two others were severely wounded and 'evacuated to a hospital to receive medical treatment', it said, adding their families had been notified. Israeli military correspondents reported the deaths occurred when improvised explosive devices detonated in the area of Beit Hanun in the north of the territory. During attempts to evacuate the wounded, soldiers reportedly came under fire. 'The unbearable news of the fall of five heroic sons in Gaza – most of them fighters of the ultra-Orthodox 'Netzach Yehuda' battalion – pierces the heart,' President Isaac Herzog posted on X.
