Watch: Premier League Footballer Turns Into Pacer, Fans Ask, 'Free For Lord's?'
Newcastle's Sean Longstaff went viral for his fast-bowling at Tynemouth Cricket Club, taking a wicket LBW and helping TCC win. Fans joked about an England call-up.
Newcastle United FC mid-fielder Sean Longstaff has gone viral on social media — not for his footballing skills but fast-bowling. Playing for Tynemouth Cricket Club (TCC), he was recorded bowling right-arm medium-pace for their first 11 against Felling CC – 1st XI in the Premier Division on Saturday, July 5.
Donning the whites, he got a batter out LBW in front. It was plumb and the umpire took no time to raise his finger, kicking off the celebrations in the bowling camp. TCC went on to win the match comfortably. They had scored 210 in the first innings and Felling CC were bowled out for just 71.

Longstaff is listed as a bowler on the TCC website, which says that he has made four appearances for the first 11 this season. These posts on X (formerly Twitter) drew some interesting reactions from the fans, with some urging, jokingly, of a possible national call-up.
England are struggling in the second Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, with their young-looking bowling attack not being able to match the Indians on a flat Edgbaston track.
Love thisHe could be on holiday instead he's playing a proper sport and looks a very decent cricketer 👏🏻— Ian kelly (@IanKelly1987) July 5, 2025
The 27-year-old is an established footballer. Transfermarkt estimates his market value to be around ₹200 Crore at the moment. He has been with Newcastle's youth teams since 2015/16 on record, while spending a couple of seasons on loans at Blackpool and Kilmarnock FC.
He has played 171 Premier League matches, scoring 10 goals and nine assists.

England have got to pick Archer: Anderson
London, July 7 (UNI) England have "got to" play Jofra Archer in the third Test against India at Lord's, said James Anderson. The pace bowler is in line to play his first Test for more than four years after a string of injuries. The 30-year-old's route back to fitness has been almost exclusively in white-ball cricket. He made his red-ball comeback for Sussex against Durham in the County Championship two weeks ago, bowling 18 overs. Anderson, England's all-time leading wicket-taker, told the Tailenders podcast: "You could keep trying to build his overs up and play him later in the series, but it could be too late by then." Anderson was part of the England team when Archer last played a Test, against India in Ahmedabad in 2021, according to a BBC news. The 42-year-old has since retired from Test cricket and spent time on the England coaching staff as a fast-bowling consultant. Archer returned to the England squad for the second Test at Edgbaston, which India won by 336 runs to level the series at 1-1. The third Test begins on Thursday. "I think he will play," said Anderson. "He's played one game for Sussex, he was around the team at Edgbaston and bowled a bit. I just feel like you've got to play him. It's too crucial a game not to." UNI BM

India breach ‘Edgbaston' to level series
India broke their near six-decade-old Birmingham duck in emphatic fashion, their bowlers doing what their English counterparts couldn't with a mesmerising performance on a flat bed of a pitch to level the series 1-1 in front of a passionate Sunday crowd. Ever since their first Test in the West Midlands ground way back in 1967, the Indians had lost seven and drawn once without tasting a victory in eight tries. That dubious record was set up nicely to be rewritten following four days of complete domination, but the task still had to be completed on the fifth and final day of the second Test. Overnight and morning rain threatened to play spoilsport to their ambitions, but when the sun came out around noon and the skies remained clear, Akash Deep shone like a precious diamond to script a memorable 336-run win. The 28-year-old Akash, who came in as a replacement for lead pacer Jasprit Bumrah but made a telling impact in the first innings with a superb 4/88 show, led the demolition job in the second with a brilliant 6/99 while the rest of the attack chipped in beautifully by bowling to a plan without losing shape, shutting out England for 271 in the second session. When the Indians checked into the ground, they were in for a depressing sight as the main square lay covered following persistent rain in the wee hours. Dark clouds were still present while they were warming up before rain lashed the ground as England, who were 72/3 overnight, looked like they may escape with a draw. India hoped and prayed for sunshine and they got their wishes fulfilled, awarded 80 overs to scalp the remaining seven England wickets. Like he did on the second and fourth evenings, Akash breathed fire on the final morning. Considered a Mohammed Shami doppelganger for his run-up, bowling style and celebration, Akash made the ball spit venom. He got India off to a rollicking start when he dismissed Ollie Pope in the second over of the day with some extra bounce before catching first-innings centurion Harry Brook cold with the classic set-up — outswing, outswing and then a sharp in-swinger. England slumped to 83/5 and they were in deep trouble now. It was no time for their high-octane Bazball but good old-fashioned defensive cricket as saving the game was the only option ahead of them. Skipper Ben Stokes (33) and wicketkeeper Jamie Smith (88), who bailed England out with a triple-century sixth-wicket partnership with Brook in the first innings, defied India with a stubborn 70-run stand. They mostly defended but pulled out the odd big stroke to frustrate the Indians who didn't drop their guard for a moment. But with the ball having gotten softer and nothing on the pitch, the Indians needed a moment of magic to snap the Smith-Stokes stay. Washington Sundar, a debatable selection for this game, provided that, trapping Stokes leg-before in the last over before lunch. The Indians came out charging post their meals, but Smith continued to stand like a brick wall, this time with support from Chris Woakes. Time was ticking over, and nervous energy crept in as it suddenly became overcast.
