Botafogo target Davide Ancelotti appointment as head coach

New York Times2 days ago
Botafogo are in talks to appoint Davide Ancelotti as head coach.
Ancelotti departed Real Madrid, where he was assistant first-team coach, alongside his father Carlo at the end of 2024-25.
The 35-year-old Italian is currently contracted to the Brazilian Football Federation (CBF), after last month joining Carlo Ancelotti's coaching staff at the Brazil men's international side.

Brazil and South America champions Botafogo are currently negotiating Davide Ancelotti's move from the CBF, with the expectation of a positive conclusion.
He would replace Renato Paiva at Botafogo, who last season won Brazil's Serie A and, for the first time in the club's history, the Copa Libertadores.
Artur Jorge, the coach who oversaw Botafogo's 2024 success, departed in January and was replaced by Paiva, who the club parted company with following their Club World Cup last-16 exit to fellow Brazilian side Palmeiras.
Davide Ancelotti has worked as a coach in his father's team since 2011 at Paris Saint-Germain. Davide initially worked as a fitness coach at PSG and Real Madrid before he was appointed as Bayern Munich's assistant coach in 2016. He joined Carlo with subsequent roles at Napoli, Everton, and a return to Madrid.
Earlier this summer, there had been managerial interest in Davide Ancelotti from clubs, including Scottish side Rangers and Deportivo La Coruna, currently in Spain's second division.
The Athletic reported in May 2024 that Ligue 1 side Reims had identified Davide as a leading candidate in their search for a new head coach, while he had previously received a lucrative offer from a Saudi Arabian club, after earning his UEFA A coaching license in 2016.
Carlo Ancelotti left Madrid at the end of the 2024-25 season after returning to the club for a four-year spell. He became the first foreign head coach to be appointed by Brazil, and replaced Dorival Junior in the position, following his sacking in March.
Botafogo are currently eighth in Serie A, six points from league leaders Flamengo.
The Copa Libertadores holders will play LDU Quito of Ecuador in the last-16 stage of this season's competition next month.

(Photo by Image) Chelsea has defeated Brazilian side Fluminense in the semi-finals of the FIFA 2025 Club World Cup by a score of 2-0 Chelsea Win In The Scorching Heat Kick-off at the Metlife Stadium in New Jersey was at 3pm on Tuesday. The heat was scorching at almost 100 degrees Fahrenheit and the humidity was 50%. All of this in a stadium with absolutely no protection from the sun meant that conditions were tough for both players and spectators alike. You couldn't help but think that the side from Rio de Janeiro might be able to use the climate to its advantage, but Chelsea were able to neutralise 'Flu' for the most part. 'The Blues' were wary of the weather. At times Chelsea completely killed the ball after winning back possession instead of instantly attacking. This helped the London-based team get its breath back and slow down the game in the process. Fluminense didn't help itself with multiple unforced errors in its own half. The Brazilian side couldn't get into any sort of groove and failed to have sustained periods on the ball. The heat didn't seem to be a factor in the end and Chelsea were much the superior team. New Signing João Pedro On Fire For Blues New signing, and former Fluminense player, João Pedro scored two fantastic goals for Chelsea either side of half time. In the first period he took advantage of lackadaisical defending and way too much time and space. Then in the second he punished Fluminense again. This time the goal was on the counter-attack and the finish was from closer in, but it was just as deadly. (Photo by Marvin Ibo Guengoer -) The Brazilian's recent arrival has bolstered Chelsea's attacking options ahead of the 2025/26 Premier League season. In the short term Pedro has made a big difference in this Club World Cup too though. His debut came last week in the quarter-final against Palmeiras and teammate Cole Palmer said that Pedro's debut 'changed the game,' when he came on in the second half, helping Chelsea win that one 2-1. The Blues now march on to the final of the Club World Cup this Sunday against the winners of PSG vs Real Madrid. Fluminense A Success For Reaching Final Four Fluminense can be proud of its performance in this Club World Cup, especially as the only non-European side to reach the final four of the tournament. 'Flu' fans will gloat about how they made it further than any other South American side in the tournament until the next competition rolls around in 2029. A draw with Borussia Dortmund in the group stage and a massive win against Inter Milan in the round of 16 are days that its fans will remember for a long time. Young midfielder Hércules impressed with two crucial goals from the bench against Inter and Al Hilal, and Colombia international Jhon Arias had a fantastic tournament. Further cementing his reputation as one of the best and most consistent players on the continent of South America. Fluminense can return to Brazil with it's chest out. Just four points behind rivals and league leader Flamengo, there is still a lot to fight for domestically.

Fluminense 0 Chelsea 2: Two Joao Pedro wondergoals seal final spot, but should Flu have had penalty?

Joao Pedro scored two brilliant goals as Chelsea secured their place in the Club World Cup final with victory over Fluminense. The Brazilian, who started his career with Fluminense before moving to Britain, scored with a brilliant finish from outside the area in the first half and then calmed his celebration against his former club. That finish was followed by a thumping second-half goal to secure a final against Real Madrid or Paris Saint-Germain. Advertisement Fluminense were unlucky in the first half as Marc Cucurella made a goalline clearance to keep Chelsea's lead in tact before Fluminense felt they should have had a penalty when the ball struck Trevoh Chalobah's hand. Though the referee initially awarded the spot-kick, after viewing the monitor, the decision was overturned. Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain meet in the other semi-final on Wednesday. Here, Oli Kay, Mark Carey and Anantaajith Raghuraman break down the action. It was an obvious narrative to keep an eye on. After an impressive cameo against Palmeiras in his first appearance for Chelsea, Joao Pedro was rewarded with his first start for Enzo Maresca's side, leading the line ahead of Nicolas Jackson — with Liam Delap unable to play through suspension. Having only joined the club a matter of days ago in a deal in excess of £50million ($68.5m), Pedro was thrust into the action sooner than many might have expected. He could hardly have asked for a better starting debut, with a sumptuous finish to give Chelsea the lead after 17 minutes. After some tenacious work down the left side, Pedro Neto's cross was cleared by Thiago Silva — falling perfectly to the 23-year-old. With two excellent touches to get the ball out of his feet, his beautiful effort curled into the far corner to nestle into the side of the net.A first goal for his new club, scored against his former club. You thought that was good? Pedro thought it a good idea to play 'goal of the tournament' with himself, following up his first strike with an emphatic finish during a Chelsea counter-attack — cutting inside from the left channel to thump the ball in off the crossbar and put Chelsea out of sight. 'I think Joao can play in all the attacking positions for us,' Maresca said ahead of the game. 'He can play wide, he can play side to pitch, he can play as a line. The difference with Nico is just that I see Nico just as a No.9, while I see Joao in different positions. Pedro's all-round game was equally impressive — occasionally coming short to link the play but also going long when the game needed to be stretched. There were even some flicks in the first half as Pedro was keen stop showcase his skills to his new fans. Advertisement They didn't all come off, but it showed how much confidence was oozing out of the Brazilian internationalA crucial defensive header at the back post showed that Pedro was also willing to engage in the gritty, agricultural side of the game for his team. Sixty minutes was all he needed after he was replaced by Jackson but if he can maintain those performances consistently next season, Maresca will unequivcally find a place for him in the team —wherever that may be on the pitch. Mark Carey Fluminense were convinced they should have had a penalty in the 34th minute. The sudden uproar around the Metlife Stadium suggested their fans did too. Joao Pedro lunged at Ignacio to give away a free-kick on Fluminense's left flank. Rene whipped a cross in that was ever so slightly flicked on by Thiago Santos and struck Trevoh Chalobah's hand. Referee Francois Letexier immediately pointed to the spot amid frantic Fluminense appeals. But 45 seconds later, following a conversation on his earpiece and amid protests from Chelsea, Letexier jogged over to the pitchside monitor on the other side to take a look for himself. Chalobah's hand was by his side as the ball struck it. While these have been given as penalties previously, Letexier announced, 'After review, handball committed by No 23, the hand is in a normal, natural position. This is not punishable… No penalty' — to Fluminense's despair and Chelsea's relief. Handballs like these tend can go either way and Maresca's side notably had a similar penalty denied in their group-phase win over Esperance de Tunis. Anantaajith Raghuraman Brazil's four-pronged mission to win the Club World Cup is over: Botafogo and Flamengo knocked out in the round of 16 by Palmeiras and Bayern Munich respectively; Palmeiras beaten by Chelsea in the quarter-final; Fluminense finally meeting their match against Chelsea in the semi-final. Fluminense had no answer to the quality of Joao Pedro in particular, but it has been an uplifting experience for Renato Gaucho's team and their supporters — not to mention a tremendously lucrative one for the club, who will earn around $60m in prize money for reaching the semi-final. Advertisement Ultimately, the financial muscle of the leading European teams has held sway in this tournament; how different might it be for a club like Fluminense if they were able to keep hold of players such as Joao Pedro, rather than sell them as soon as the first big offers from Europe arrive. Will that change with the money they and others have earned from this tournament? The consensus among the Brazilian media is that it will not. Several Fluminense players have put themselves in the shop window over the past few weeks: among them Colombia winger Jhon Arias and midfielder Hercules. Arias has had an excellent tournament, but he made less of an impact against Chelsea and an obdurate full-back in Marc Cucurella It is beyond question, though, that the Brazilian teams and their supporters have made their mark at the Club World Cup. Their enthusiasm for the competition — for any opportunity to prove themselves against Europe's finest — has been one of its main selling points. Euro 2025: Sweden eases past Poland and advances to quarterfinals along with Germany

LUCERNE, Switzerland (AP) — Sweden advanced to the quarterfinals at the Women's European Championship by beating Poland 3-0 on Tuesday, a result that also sent Germany through to the knockout rounds from their group. A hat trick of headed goals by three different players was fair reward for relentless attacking down Sweden's right flank that left the overmatched Poland defense exposed. Sweden had already struck the crossbar with two headers before center forward Stina Blackstenius opened the scoring in the 28th. Captain Kosovare Asllani padded the lead in the 52nd and substitute Lina Hurtig got a key third in the 77th. That goal sent Sweden top of the standings on goal difference ahead of Germany, ensuring it only needs a draw to win the group when the teams meet Saturday. Germany also got its second win earlier, beating Denmark 2-1 after trailing at halftime. The winner of Group C will likely avoid Euro 2025 favorite Spain's half of the knockout bracket. The group runner-up between Sweden and Germany would be on a path to meet Spain in the semifinals. Poland now has two losses and no goals scored on its major tournament debut, after losing 2-0 to Germany. Captain and star forward Ewa Pajor was kept isolated by the Sweden defense, which cut off most passes seeking her out. Sweden got another bonus when Fridolina Rolfö — a teammate of Pajor at Barcelona — came on as a late substitute for her first action after being a pre-tournament doubt because of an injury. ___ AP soccer:
