PHILADELPHIA — The Detroit Tigers cut left-hander Dietrich Enns by designating him for assignment, then traded him in their final move on the day of the trade deadline.
The Tigers traded Enns to the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday, July 31, in exchange for cash considerations. The 34-year-old has joined the Orioles' 26-man roster, so he gets to stay in the big leagues.
Enns pitched for Central Michigan from 2010-12.
MORE ABOUT HIM: Who is Dietrich Enns? Central Michigan pitcher returns to MLB with Tigers after 1,371 days
By trading for Enns, the Orioles skipped the waiver process that would've allowed any other MLB team to claim him.
The Tigers designated Enns for assignment Thursday afternoon — less than three hours before the Orioles trade — to create space on their 40-man roster for right-handed reliever Codi Heuer, whom the Tigers acquired from the Texas Rangers for cash considerations and assigned to Triple-A Toledo.
For the Tigers, Enns posted a 5.60 ERA with four walks and 15 strikeouts across 17⅔ innings in seven games (two starts). He owns a 4.30 ERA in his MLB career, spanning 44 innings in parts of three seasons with the Minnesota Twins (2017), Tampa Bay Rays (2021) and Tigers (2025).
HIS JOURNEY: Ex-CMU lefty Dietrich Enns joins Tigers after three-year trek through Asia
Enns pitched in Asia during the 2022-24 seasons, sending 2022-23 in Japan and 2024 in Korea. After that, the Tigers signed Enns to a minor league contract in January 2025.
He now works for the Orioles.

Mets' Frankie Montas to pitch on Saturday against Brewers, but club 'could get creative'

Mets right-hander Frankie Montas had another rough outing on Sunday against the San Francisco Giants, with manager Carlos Mendoza non-committal after the game as to whether or not Montas would make his next start. Speaking on Monday afternoon, Mendoza explained that Montas will indeed pitch on Saturday against the Milwaukee Brewers, but his role is still to be determined, as the Mets could potentially opt to use an opener in front of the veteran. 'We're having those discussions here. He is going to pitch against the Brewers,' Mendoza explained. 'So, [Kodai] Senga is going to go Friday after the off day, but because we have an off day in between that series, we could get creative. "So, maybe an opener in front of him, but as of right now, on Saturday, he's going to play a part in that game. Depending on how we get through on Friday, we'll see, but like I said, on Saturday he's pitching.' Mendoza spoke with Montas about that decision, saying that Montas will prepare as if he's making the start, whether or not an opener is used. 'He's willing to do whatever it takes,' Mendoza said. After missing the bulk of the first half of the season due to a lat strain suffered in spring training, Montas has struggled since returning to the mound. In seven starts, the veteran has pitched to a 6.68 ERA and a 1.545 WHIP. He's allowed 4+ earned runs in four of those starts, and is yet to go 6.0 innings in any outing. With Montas' issues front and center, there's been plenty of chatter about whether the Mets should promote one of their top pitching prospects from Triple-A Syracuse, namely Brandon Sproat or Nolan McLean. Asked on Monday if he's been watching those two any more closely of late, Mendoza said he's always keeping an eye on the minor leaguers, though he did note that both players are seemingly ready, or at least very close to being ready, to pitch in the majors. 'I've been watching those guys for a long time,' said Mendoza. 'Every time they pitch, I read the reports, I watch some of the outings, a couple innings, but nothing changes as far as my routine goes. … I know they've been pretty good down there, and that's all they need to do. Continue to do what they've been doing.' 'They continue to put themselves in a position where, like, 'Alright, we're going to have that conversation.' They're knocking at the door. … We like where they're at in terms of their development.' Paul Blackburn Update Elsewhere on the rotation front, the plan is for Paul Blackburn to make one more rehab outing for Triple-A Syracuse on Friday. After that, the Mets will have a decision to make on how to use the veteran right-hander. Blackburn has been on the IL since early July with a right shoulder impingement. In his first three outings for Syracuse, Blackburn has allowed four runs on 14 hits with 14 strikeouts to four walks in 16.2 innings

Eagles running back Saquon Barkley declines invitation to join Trump's sports council

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Saquon Barkley has declined an invitation to join President Donald Trump's council on sports, fitness, and nutrition, which is being revitalized under an executive order that also reestablishes the Presidential Fitness Test for American children. Barkley, the 2,000-yard rusher for the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles, was on a list of sports personalities that included golfers Bryson DeChambeau and Nelly Korda, WWE executive Paul 'Triple H' Levesque, football Hall of Famer Lawrence Taylor and retired New York Yankees great Mariano Rivera. Barkley said Monday following Eagles' practice that he had actually declined the invitation. 'A couple months ago, it was brought to my team about the council," Barkley said. "So I'm not really too familiar with it. I felt like that I am going to be super busy. Me and my family thought it would probably be of best interest to not accept that. I was definitely a little shocked when my name was mentioned. I'm assuming it's something great, so I appreciate it but was a little shocked when my name was mentioned.' Trump last week reestablished the Presidential Fitness Test for American children, a fixture of public schools for decades that gauged young people's health and athleticism with 1-mile runs, sit-ups and stretching exercises. 'This is a wonderful tradition, and we're bringing it back,' Trump said of the fitness test that began in 1966 but was phased out during the Obama administration. The executive order also reinvigorated the national sports council that could have included Barkley. Barkley won AP Offensive Player of the Year last season after rushing for 2,005 yards, eighth-best in NFL history, in his first season with the Eagles. Barkley has golfed with Trump and former President Barack Obama over the last year and the running back attended the White House celebration of the champion Eagles while some teammates — notably star quarterback Jalen Hurts — skipped the ceremony. Barkley visited Trump in April at Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey, and caught a ride with the president to Washington on Air Force One and then to the White House on Marine One. 'He loved it,' Trump said then of Barkley's short flight on the presidential airplane. 'He's a great young guy and an incredible football player. Saquon had a season for the ages, running behind the most powerful offensive line in the NFL." Barkley, meanwhile, pushed back on social media criticism following the visit. He noted that he had already golfed with Obama, a Democrat. 'Maybe I just respect the office, not a hard concept to understand,' Barkley posted on X. ___ AP sports: Dan Gelston, The Associated Press
