3 Takeaways from Jaguars' training camp practice No. 6: Travis Hunter and Josh Hines-Allen
The Jacksonville Jaguars have wrapped up their sixth training camp practice, the second of which was in pads.
With help from the media members who were in attendance, here are three key takeaways from what took place on Tuesday.
Opportunity for Jarrian Jones
During offseason programs, Montaric Brown had spent a lot of time with the first team defense opposite of Tyson Campbell. Unfortunately, Brown will be sidelined for the remainder of training camp with an injury.
This has then led to additional opportunities for other cornerbacks on the roster, specifically Jarrian Jones. As ESPN's Michael DiRocco wrote after minicamp, Jones was navigating a learning curve with Anthony Campanile's zone-heavy defensive scheme.
However, after Tuesday's practice, Campanile discussed the progress he has seen from Jones.
"He's a great competitor," Campanile said of Jones. "He really works hard to play with technique. I think he did a great job in the spring and he's one of the guys that worked really hard in the summer. Was with a lot of the guys on the team, working technique, studying, so he came back into camp really ready to go.
"I see a lot of the drill work he's doing every day is showing up now. The muscle memory is starting to set in and he's really playing with good technique and it's starting to show up in all the one-on-one work and the team periods."
Josh Hines-Allen has been very disruptive
As Jamal St. Cyr of News-4-Jax wrote in his training camp takeaways, Hines-Allen has been a "one-man wrecking crew." St. Cyr added that Hines-Allen has looked "unblockable at times."
Compared to this time a year ago. Hines-Allen is back at his more natural playing weight after former defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen had him and other defenders bulk up. This is also a defensive scheme under Campanile that has a very attacking play style up front and one that prioritizes movement as well.
Hines-Allen isn't only playing well, he's very confident and has a huge goal for the 2025 season--he wants to break the NFL's single-season sack record, which is currently at 22.5 sacks.
"I think all pass rushers should strive for that goal like every team strives to win a Super Bowl," Hines-Allen said via ESPN. "So, I think my goal is to break the record and not really focus on it. Just know that if I handle what I need to handle, stay healthy, know what I'm doing, communicate, anticipate what's happening to me, anticipate pass and kind of be quicker on that, then everything's going to play off the way it's supposed to."
Another impressive day for Travis Hunter
Two days ago, on Sunday, Hunter put together a really impressive performance at cornerback, which included multiple pass breakups.
On Tuesday, now playing wide receiver, he had another strong showing. John Shipley of Jaguars on SI wrote that Hunter had "several impressive grabs" during today's practice. Shipley adds that Hunter had a touchdown during the red zone period and made a tough over-the-middle catch as well.
"Really encouraging," Grant Udinski said of Hunter's progress at receiver. "I think even from the end of the spring last year to the start of training camp this year, you notice the progression. Not only from the mental standpoint but from a technique and release standpoint at the receiver position. I only expect with the way that he works and approaches it that progression will continue."

Reports: Eagles acquire CB Jakorian Bennett from Raiders
The Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles added depth to a solid secondary, acquiring cornerback Jakorian Bennett in a trade with the Las Vegas Raiders, multiple media outlets reported Monday night. The Raiders reportedly received reserve defensive tackle Thomas Booker IV in the swap. Bennett, 24, appeared in 10 games for Las Vegas last season, making seven stops. He finished with 26 tackles and eight passes defensed. A fourth-round draft pick in 2023 out of Maryland, Bennett played in 14 games and started four times as a rookie. In his two seasons overall, he has 58 tackles and 11 passes defensed. Booker, 25, appeared in every regular-season game for Philadelphia last year, starting once. However, he was in on only 17 percent of the Eagles' defensive plays and seven percent of the special teams snaps. He had 18 tackles, one sack and one pass defense. The Texans made him a fifth-round pick out of Stanford in 2022. He appeared in 10 games (one start) for Houston that year -- his lone NFL experience before 2024. For the Texans, he recorded 15 tackles, 0.5 sacks and one pass defensed. The Eagles open the preseason on Thursday against the visiting Cincinnati Bengals, then officially start defense of their title against the visiting Dallas Cowboys on Sept. 4. The Raiders start preseason play Thursday on the road against the Seattle Seahawks, then open the regular season on the road vs. the New England Patriots on Sept. 7. --Field Level Media Field Level Media 2025 - All Rights Reserved

Eagles' Saquon Barkley says he's not part of Trump's sports council: ‘Definitely a little shocked when my name was mentioned'
Philadelphia Eagles star running back Saquon Barkley said Monday he was surprised to learn he had been named to the President's Council on Sports, Fitness and Nutrition because he had turned down the opportunity earlier this year. Barkley is one of several top athletes who President Donald Trump named to the revamped council that the president unveiled at a White House event last week. When asked about his appointment on Monday, Barkley said he doesn't plan to participate. 'Couple months ago it was brought to my team about the council. So, I'm not really too familiar with it. I felt like I'm going to be super busy so, me and my family thought it was probably in the best interest to not accept that,' Barkley told reporters. 'So, was definitely a little shocked when my name was mentioned. I'm assuming it's something great, so I appreciate it, but was a little shocked my name was mentioned.' CNN has reached out to the White House for a response to Barkley's comments. Barkley and the president are on friendly terms. He was seen spending time with Trump a day before the team's scheduled visit to the White House to celebrate their recent Super Bowl victory. Trump approached the reporters assembled at the airport, saying about Barkley: 'What a nice guy.' He added: 'I wanted to race him, but I decided not to do it.' The pair later boarded Air Force One. In April, pictures on social media showed Barkley and Trump at the Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey, with multiple 'Make America Great Again' hats sitting on the table. Barkley used social media to respond to criticism over his decision to meet and play golf with Trump. 'Lol some people are really upset cause I played golfed and flew to the White House with the PRESIDENT,' he said on X. 'Maybe I just respect the office, not a hard concept to understand. Just golfed with Obama not too long ago … and look forward to finishing my round with Trump! Now ya get out my mentions with all this politics and have amazing day.' The other athletes named by the White House as being appointed to the council include golfer Bryson DeChambeau, who will serve as chair; NHL commissioner Gary Bettman, San Francisco 49ers defensive star Nick Bosa; Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker; and former college football player Cody Campbell, who is also the head of Texas Tech's Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) collective and has been a key voice contributing to Trump's policies on college sports. Other notable appointees are NFL commissioner Roger Goodell; hockey legend Wayne Gretzky; golfer Nelly Korda; WWE executive and professional wrestler Paul 'Triple H' Levesque; golf legends Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player; Hall of Fame pitcher Mariano Rivera; retired quarterback and current CBS NFL commentator Tony Romo; golfer Annika Sörenstam; Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa; former New York Giants star Lawrence Taylor; and Florida Panthers player Matthew Tkachuk. Trump was joined by professional athletes on Thursday as he signed the order to expand his Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition, which included reviving the Presidential Fitness Test in public schools. The event, which featured DeChambeau, Butker and Taylor, among others, comes as the US prepares to host the 2025 Ryder Cup, 2026 FIFA World Cup and the 2028 Summer Olympics — all of which are major feathers in Trump's cap for his second term. The president, who often boasts that he gets to oversee the milestone sporting events, has been heavily invested in making them a success. He has also used his bully pulpit to reshape cultural issues, many of which have been tied directly to sports, including new policies on transgender athletes and threatening the Washington Commanders football team to change its name back to the 'Redskins' or potentially face restrictions on a major stadium deal. This initiative seems to be an attempt to build on that momentum. The order formally reestablishes the Presidential Fitness Test, first introduced by President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1966, creating school-based programs that reward 'excellence in physical education' and developing criteria for a Presidential Fitness Award, according to details of the order obtained by CNN. The test, which will be administered by Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., brings back the fitness challenge that permeated public schools and anointed children who received the highest scores with presidential recognition. Former President Barack Obama abandoned the test in 2012 and replaced it with an assessment called the FitnessGram, focused on bettering individual health. CNN's Alayna Treene and Ben Morse contributed to this report.
