Sinner opens up on splitting with Djokovic's ex-coaches on eve of Wimbledon
Jannik Sinner has opted to split with physiotherapist Ulises Badio and fitness coach Marco Panichi, who both previously worked with Novak Djokovic, on the eve of Wimbledon but insists there's "nothing major" behind the decision.
The Italian heads to SW19 off the back of a shock second round defeat at his warm-up tournament in Halle and has since rejigged his team. The world No.1 is still working with coaches Simone Vagnozzi and Darren Cahill.
Sinner, who recently returned from a doping ban, has been among the tour's most successful players over the past 18 months. He's won three of the last six Grand Slams but is looking to make an impact at Wimbledon for the first time.
The 23-year-old has played down the changes behind the scene however despite them coming so close to his efforts at the All England Club.
He said: "Nothing major happened. Nothing big happened. I parted ways not long ago, but it's not affecting me. I feel ready to compete. I feel free. I feel me and my team, we are ready to do the best we can. Yeah, so I'm here to play good tennis. I think that's my main goal, the main reason why I'm here. We've reached incredible results in the past with them, so obviously huge thanks to them. We made some great job, but I decided to do something different."
Sinner added: "As I said, we made some great work. For me the final in Roland Garros was an amazing achievement. That's it. Look, in this sport things can happen. There is nothing incredible, no, because sometimes a player feels something different, and that's my case."
The Italian was recently on the received end of a stunning Carlos Alcaraz comeback with the Spaniard winning the French Open recently despite trailing by two sets to Sinner. The Italian had three championship points in the fourth set before later losing in a five-set thriller.
Sinner has once made the semi-finals at Wimbledon, that coming in 2023 when he was beaten by Djokovic. Last year he was ousted in the last eight when Daniil Medvedev beat him, although the Italian was not playing at 100 percent after calling for his trainer.
Djokovic was quizzed on Sinner's decision to cut two coaches who previously worked with him and said: "I did work with Marco and Uli, and I think they are phenomenal professionals that both have contributed also a lot to me, to my team, to my success.
"I don't know what the reasons are for the split with Jannik. It came as a surprise to me as well because I think Jannik's game and body really has improved so much in the last year, year and a half. They've been an integral part of that team. I don't know, to be honest."

Sinner enjoys 'beautiful' month in wake of crushing French Open final loss
LONDON, July 1 (Reuters) - Jannik Sinner would have been forgiven for spending the last month licking the open wounds from his French Open final defeat by Carlos Alcaraz, but the Italian said the experience had been beautiful after kicking off his Wimbledon campaign on Tuesday. Sinner marched into the second round at Wimbledon with a 6-4 6-3 6-0 drubbing of Luca Nardi and if he still bore the scars of his epic five-set loss to Alcaraz at Roland Garros, they were certainly not on show as he bulldozed past his fellow Italian. When asked how tough it had been over the last month, which also included an early exit at Halle in his only grasscourt warm-up, the world number one was almost entirely positive. "As a person, I know how important tennis is for me and for my life. I think it taught me so many things. But I also know that outside of tennis is a different life, which is more important," he told reporters. "For sure last month was not easy at times. But in the other way, it was beautiful, you know? So many things happened. Never thought that I would play a final of a Grand Slam like this. "So all positive things, to be honest. "Now I'm here. I'm here to show also myself that I'm capable of playing tennis also on grass hopefully. I showed it last year. I felt like I have improved a lot on this surface. So let's see what I can do this year." Three-times Grand Slam champion Sinner, who has never got past the Wimbledon semi-finals, looked every inch a grasscourt master as he dismantled Nardi in stifling conditions on Court One. He lost only four points on his first serve, which was functioning like clockwork against Nardi, who bravely clung on for the first two sets before capitulating completely in the third. When it was suggested to Sinner that he had modelled his serve on John Isner, who wrote his name in Wimbledon history with his 11-hour marathon win over Nicolas Mahut in 2010, the Italian suggested there also others he was trying to emulate. "Of course, you try to improve by watching some other servings, no? For sure he (Isner) is one of the list we try to watch," added top seed Sinner, who will face Aleksandar Vukic in the next round. "I feel quite comfortable at the moment. We worked a lot in this week of preparation with the serve, trying to slow a little bit the rhythm in the beginning. "So today it felt very well, especially the first serve. He (Nardi) was struggling also to return the second serve today. But again, I'm happy about the progress. Of course, we try to keep working."

Manchester United interested in ambitious move for experienced PSG midfielder
Manchester United are interested in Paris Saint-Germain and Spain midfielder Fabian Ruiz, but a successful move could prove very difficult to pull off. The 29-year-old was a big part in PSG's immense season last time round as they completed a treble of the Champions League, Ligue 1 and Coupe de France. The Spaniard made 58 appearances across all competitions, 17 of which came in the successful Champions League campaign. Ruiz started the final against Inter Milan alongside Vitinha and Joao Neves, the midfield trio which was hugely influential over the season under Luis Enrique. After plenty of fine performances it is no surprise that Ruiz has attracted attention and Manchester United are reportedly admirers of the former Napoli man. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your team in the link so we can send you football news tailored to you. French publication Foot Mercato report that there is interest from Saudi Arabia, specifically from Al-Nassr, and also from Old Trafford. It is not the first time the Red Devils have been linked with Ruiz, as the English team were named as suitors for him when he made the switch from Napoli to PSG in 2022. A deal to sign Ruiz will be far from easy to secure, though, given the contrasting fortunes of Manchester United and PSG of late. The French champions announced themselves as the best team in Europe last season, with their 5-0 demolition of Inter Milan in the Champions League final leaving little doubt over that. Whereas the Red Devils finished 15th in the Premier League table and their defeat to Tottenham in the Europa League final meant they missed their final chance to play Champions League football – or European football of any brand – next season. PSG also do not want to let Ruiz go, with the Spaniard an important part of Enrique's plans, as he was throughout the 2024-25 season. The manager said of Ruiz earlier this year: 'I'm very happy with what he brings on and off the pitch. He can still improve, like everyone else. He always plays hard, he's always ready to play a minute or 90, he's very important for us, I'm very happy with his performances. 'He's sometimes been criticized, but he's one of my best midfielders. He knows how to play around his teammates. He can make assists, play between the lines, play without the ball, create chances, he has a good shot. 'We mustn't forget that he was voted the best player at Euro 2024.' The midfielder is under contract in Paris until 2027 and an extension is certainly a possibility if PSG want to guarantee that he will not be tempted away. More Trending Manchester United, as ever, have been linked with a numerous players during this transfer window, including in central midfield. While not in the same class as Ruiz, Leicester City's Wilfred Ndidi is reportedly a name on their radar as he is available for just £9m due to a release clause in his Foxes contract. The Red Devils are looking for improvement in multiple positions, with Bryan Mbeumo still their focus in attack as they look to get a deal done with Brentford. Goalkeeper Andre Onana's future is also uncertain and a replacement could be brought in, while other arrivals may depend on departures as the likes of Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Antony are on the transfer list but agreeing deals for the forwards, who are on huge contracts, is not easy. BBC's Martina Navratilova in tears live on air as Wimbledon break protocol
Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info Wimbledon made an exceptional break from tradition as two-time champion Petra Kvitova played her final match at the All England Club. Prior to the tournament, the ex-world No.2 had revealed her plans to retire after the US Open later this year. Granted a wildcard for Wimbledon, Kvitova faced a challenging first-round opponent in No. 10 seed Emma Navarro. Despite an initial lead, Kvitova was defeated 6-3 6-1, an outcome that moved BBC commentator Martina Navratilova to tears. In a departure from standard practice, the on-court interviewer announced that Kvitova would be given the chance to address the crowd, despite not winning the match. As Kvitova and Navarro met at the net, Navratilova, also from the Czech Republic, was visibly emotional as she honoured the 35 year old retiring player, reports the Express. "It's hard for me to talk right now, she's just such a nice person on and off the court, a role model everywhere," Navratilova said, overcome with emotion. Kvitova acknowledged the audience's applause as she crossed Court 1 to retrieve her towel. She stayed on for a final interview on Wimbledon's second-largest showcourt. (Image: Getty) "Ladies and gentlemen, I'm sure you're all aware, our normal protocol is to interview the winner. But on this special occasion, the last appearance in the main draw for two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova, Petra, we'd like to give you the opportunity for a few words," Rishi Prasad declared. Addressing the crowd, the two-time Wimbledon champion expressed her gratitude: "Hi everyone, thank you very much for the beautiful atmosphere you made today, it was very special to play on this beautiful court. Congrats Emma on the win, good luck, I wish we could play a little bit longer but okay, whatever!". She shared her sentiments about returning to the prestigious tournament: "To have another chance to play one more time here, it means a lot to me. This place holds the best memories I could wish for. I never dreamed of winning Wimbledon, and I won it twice, this is something very, very special." Kvitova also acknowledged her feelings about leaving the sport and the tournament: "I will miss Wimbledon for sure, I will miss tennis, I will miss you fans, but I'm ready for the next chapter in my life as well. I can't wait to be back as a member which is still very unreal for me, to come back here and see all you guys again." Returning earlier this year after welcoming her first child and taking a 16-month break, Kvitova paid homage to those who had supported her through her career. Amidst laughter, she humorously mentioned her coaches: "I didn't have many tennis coaches through my career. My first one was my dad, who is here today as well, and my last one is my husband." Sending love to her dear ones in Czech, the winner of numerous tour titles gave her thanks to her friends, family, and team members before Navarro took the opportunity to speak to both Kvitova and the audience. The 10th seed expressed admiration for her opponent, saying: "Petra has had an amazing career and I told her at the net it was a pleasure to play her today. It was a little surreal to look across the court and see her over there serving bombs at me. I don't think you've lost any speed on your serve!" She continued with respect, saying: "It was a bit intimidating at times and I just want to say congratulations for all you've done in this sport. Good luck for the rest of the year and wherever this life takes you when you're done here, best of luck."
