‘Cost is a crucial factor': Aussie business owners reveal why their products are made in China
Alexandra Pappas, 36, is the founder of statement homewares company No. 22 and she's found it impossible to get her products made in Australia.
'We have found that producing our products in China costs, on average, around one-third of what it would be to manufacture the same products in Australia or other regions,' she told news.com.au.
'As we look to develop a new range of glassware, the quotes we have received from Australian-based manufacturers are significantly higher than those from Chinese factories.'
Ms Pappas argued that 'cost is a crucial factor' in decision-making, and if it costs more to make something, ultimately, she has to pass on that cost to consumers.
Her focus has to be on keeping the business profitable.
And Aussies might like to say they want things made in Australia, but do they want to pay inflated prices?
It is a question that Ms Pappas isn't prepared to risk asking her customers.
'For example, we are currently collaborating on a limited-edition collection with a specialist factory in Greece,' she said.
'The production costs for this collection are approximately four times higher than our core range. As a result, this collection will be positioned at a premium price point in order for it to be feasible and successful for us.'
The business owner argued that getting stuff made in China isn't just a money-saving technique — it's also a great place to have products made.
'China offers world-class manufacturing capabilities, particularly when it comes to producing high-quality ceramics at scale,' she said.
'The factory we work with is home to highly skilled artisans who have crafted for some of the world's leading lifestyle and homewares brands.'
Ms Pappas argued that there's still a stigma when someone hears something is 'made in China', one she disagrees with.
'There is still a misconception that manufacturing in China equates to lower quality,' she said.
'Many of the best lifestyle products are produced there because of the unmatched craftsmanship, access to materials and capacity for consistent, high-volume production.'
Tina Grosso, the founder of underwear brand Chou Chou intimates, has a similar perspective, but her decision stems from what she couldn't find in Australia.
'Choosing to manufacture in China isn't just about lowering costs, it's about accessing a level of craftsmanship, technical capability, and scalability that's incredibly hard to find in Australia,' she told news.com.au.
'Locally, I am yet to find a factory equipped to handle the kind of specialised work we do at the scale we do it, especially when it comes to lingerie or detailed garment construction.'
Ms Grosso, 30, said that while 'manufacturing offshore does offer cost efficiencies,' she believes the real value comes from the makers there.
'The real value is in working with partners who understand our product, share our quality standards, and can support our long-term growth,' she said.
'We've built relationships with trusted suppliers who are experienced, ethical, and deeply skilled in their craft.'
Before she started manufacturing her products in China, quality was her 'biggest concern,' and she wanted to make sure she understand exactly how the process would work.
'Before committing to any purchase orders, I physically went and visited the production sites, requested multiple samples, asked for and reviewed all their audits and certifications,' she said.
Despite how much she can justify her decision to manufacture her brand offshore, she knows it comes with criticism.
'There's still a lot of outdated stigma attached to 'Made in China,' especially in fashion,' she said.
'I think brands hesitate to talk about it because they fear it might dilute their perceived value but the truth is, where something is made matters less than how it's made and who you're working with.'
At the end of the day, though, the business owner simply couldn't find a local supplier in Australia who could meet her needs.
'Especially since lingerie requires specialised machinery and technical expertise. Beyond that, finding enough skilled seamstresses to produce at scale, particularly in NSW, would be incredibly difficult,' she said.
'Based on my research, if we were to factor in local wages, limited access to materials, and smaller production runs, I estimate the cost would be at least 60-70 per cent higher than manufacturing in China.'
That reality means that once she crunched the numbers, there was no way she could afford to make her lingerie in Australia.
'At that cost, even with minimum margins, the retail price of our garments would be pushed beyond what most customers are willing to pay — making the product commercially unviable,' she said.
'The difference isn't just about saving — it's what enables us to reinvest into quality, sustainability and storytelling while keeping our pieces accessible.'

Land and Environment Court dismisses Martins Creek Quarry expansion appeal
The Land and Environment Court has dismissed an appeal to expand a controversial hard rock quarry in the New South Wales Hunter Valley which residents hope will be the end of a decade-long fight. In 2022 resources company Daracon lodged plans to expand the Martins Creek Quarry, north-west of Newcastle, to allow it to extract more than a million tonnes of rock materials, like gravel, each year. It was expected the expansion would generate up to 160 truck movements a day through several Hunter Valley towns, including the historic Paterson village and Bolwarra. In February 2023, the NSW Independent Planning Commission (IPC) refused the expansion finding it would have "unreasonable" and "unacceptable" impacts for communities on the haulage route. Daracon appealed the decision, arguing it would benefit the workforce and provide materials for local infrastructure projects in the construction and roads industries, but that appeal was knocked back again by the Land and Environment Court on Wednesday. In the court's judgement, Commissioner Peter Walsh and Acting Commissioner Michael Young said negative consequences of the project outweighed the positives. "The beneficial impacts of the [application] relate principally to the supply of the quarry's product for the construction sector and particularly for infrastructure projects of public significance," the commissioners said. "The negative consequences are particularly in relation to adverse traffic and pedestrian safety implications, and social and amenity-related impacts in the local area. The Martins Creek Quarry Action Group have lobbied against the expansion of the quarry for more than a decade. Its president, Luke Barker, told ABC Newcastle Drive the majority of the community would be "in high spirits" hearing the news. He said the main reason many in the community had been against expanding the quarry was due to safety concerns and the impact on small roads in the area. "It's fantastic that the commissioner has seen what that impact has been and what that impact would be for not only this current generation of people but the generations to come," Mr Barker said. "There's people moving through the township all the time, crossing roads between the post office, the chemist, the local eateries, the pubs, supermarket. "Then we have a very high tourism aspect. It's a great stopover spot for people coming through. "It's just the impacts on the community were just too much to bear." He said the group was not against the quarry remaining operational into the future at its current size and scope. In a statement a Daracon spokesperson told the ABC the company was disappointed by the IPC's decision. "For more than a decade Daracon has led a rigorous process of environmental studies and stakeholder engagement which has seen the application amended a multitude of times to create compromises, resulting in a recommendation for approval by the then-NSW Department of Planning and Infrastructure in 2022," the spokesperson said. "It is disappointing that today's decision does not uphold that. The spokesperson said the company was disappointed it would not be able to supply construction materials from the site to local infrastructure projects. "We will now take time to assess the future of the quarry," the spokesperson said.

Two towns face jobless wave as miner warns it may halt operations
North Queensland locals have been left on edge as Swiss miner Glencore reveals it is considering shutting down two operations, placing thousands of jobs in jeopardy. The Mount Isa copper smelter and Townsville copper refinery directly employ 550 people, with 500 jobs also threatened at Dyno Nobel's Phosphate Hill operations, but lobby group Townsville Enterprise estimates 17,000 jobs are connected to the downstream copper assets. Without government assistance, the company will have to place the Mount Isa and Townsville operations into care and maintenance, according to an internal memo to staff from Glencore's interim chief operating officer on Wednesday morning. Roland Lobegeiger, a field services manager for Isadraulics, which services hydraulic component systems, told the move would be a 'significant loss' not just for his company, but the town of Mount Isa. 'Without it, the town's not going to be here,' Mr Lobegeiger said. 'There are other mines – there would be other work in the area, but would the town recover? It's hard to say. 'It would be a significant change for a lot of businesses, homes, house prices – you name it. 'It's definitely a bit of a dark cloud over the area. Everyone's still optimistic that they won't shut it down, but no one knows.' Mr Wilson's internal memo painted a grim picture of the company's position in North Queensland. 'To date Glencore has been absorbing losses hopeful that a viable solution could be found,' he wrote, according to the Townsville Bulletin. 'However, we are fast reaching the point at which Glencore cannot continue to absorb these losses. 'We need to know in the coming weeks whether there is a viable solution on the table from governments. 'Glencore is genuinely disappointed at the prospect of placing the smelter and refinery into care and maintenance if we do not receive adequate government support.' Talks between Glencore and the Queensland and federal governments have yet to reach a solution, with the miner on track to lose billions of dollars from the two operations over the next seven years. Senior Glencore executive Suresh Vadnagra said the company remained open to taxpayers taking a big equity stake in the refinery and smelter. 'Time is running out,' Mr Vadnagre told The Australian. 'We have been engaging with government for the past five months. 'We need to know in the coming weeks whether there is a viable solution on the table from governments or whether we start to planning to transition the copper smelter and refinery into care and maintenance.' It comes as smelters and refineries are struggling to operate across Australia. The country's biggest aluminium producer, the Rio Tinto-owned Tomago, has requested billions of dollars from the federal and NSW governments amid high power prices and competition with China. The Labor government has held out the possibility of providing loans and taxpayer funds to prop up Australian smelters. 'The truth is, if these facilities didn't exist, governments would be trying to build them,' Industry Minister Tim Ayres told The Australian Financial Review.

Reality behind ‘insane' op shop trend

OPINION Every week, it seems like someone new has posted a TikTok or Reddit rant about a 'wildly overpriced' op shop item – an $80 jumper, a $50 platter, a $300 dress – and it instantly blows up. The general consensus is that charity shops are meant to be cheap, and this feels like a betrayal. Given the cost-of-living crunch, I get why people are fired up. But here's the thing. As someone who's been turning to op shops for as long as I can remember to help keep my insatiable shopping habit in check, I have to say, I don't actually see the issue. Not only is the outrage often misdirected, but the story behind the expensive price tags is often much more nuanced than TikTok wants it to be. And frankly, if we're going to talk about op shop prices in 2025, let's do it with some facts. Here's why I'm standing in defence of 'expensive' items in charity shops. I stand by high prices at op shops, here's why. Picture: 1. The issue has been massively overblown The idea that op shop prices are spiralling out of control is just a huge misrepresentation. There are currently 3000 op shops in Australia, selling 160 million household and clothing items per year at an average price of $5.81 per item. Yes, $5.81. This average includes clothes, toys, books, furniture and homewares … so, no, the average price has not gone up, and there are millions of very low-priced products available. In other words, the vast majority of items are genuinely affordable for everyday Aussies, and offer a decent cost-of-living relief. According to Charitable Reuse Australia, a national network of charitable reuse enterprises, shopping second-hand saves Australians $2 billion a year. Drilling down by state, where there are government-funded studies, shopping second-hand saves the NSW community a whopping $432 million in cost-of-living relief a year, with an average item price of $5.33 across 107 million items resold locally. In Tasmania, shopping second-hand saves the community $147 million in cost-of-living relief, with an average price of $4.91 across 13 million items resold locally. In South Australia, the savings range from $147 million to $432 million. The average price of an item is still extremely low. Picture: 2. Shopping second-hand is still the more sustainable option By aligning quality and prices with current retail trends, op shops discourage mindless consumerism and fast fashion. 'Charity Shops will assess and sell suitable items,' Omer Soker, CEO of Charitable Reuse Australia told 'Staff and volunteers will price them accordingly to what they feel is a fair price, and saleable to Australian consumers. 'Charity shops can't resell lower-quality items that aren't designed to last as they don't have the quality or durability for people to want them. A durable second-hand item in a charity shop will last much longer than a cheap new one of inferior quality, so it gets worn again and again, providing better value and sustainability over time.' According to the organisation's National Reuse Impact Report 2025, 190,000 tonnes of waste were diverted from landfill to reuse, and op shops saved 1.4 million tonnes of CO2 emissions per year. There is a market for higher-priced items, and it all goes to a good cause Of course, thrifting has become increasingly trendy over the years, thanks to the renewed movement towards sustainability and slow fashion, as well as the influence of social media platforms like Pinterest and TikTok. Because of this, some op shops in certain areas will sell items for $100 to $200, or even $300 or above for designer pieces. According to a spokesperson for St Vincent de Paul Society, Vinnies stores are 'stocked and priced according to location and demographic'. For example, city stores will stock differently from regional centres. 'There are also boutique-style vintage stores in the suburbs where they resonate with style-conscious consumers,' they added. And it's important to remember that these pricier items are still a huge bargain when you consider the value the item is worth. The other day, I was visiting one of my favourite local op shops, Op for Change in Manly, and I came across a $290 dress, which I initially baulked at. However, after a quick Google Reverse Search, I found that the Agua dress retailed for $1143, which was a 75 per cent markdown. Another dress from the brand Alexis was priced at $240, but retailed for $1288, an 80 per cent reduction. This is objectively good value, and although these sorts of items 'may not be within budget for every customer,' as the Vinnies spokesperson notes, they do cater to the large number of higher-income buyers who enjoy and value shopping second-hand. There is a huge market for quality, designer goods at op shops and the money goes to a good cause. Picture: Interestingly, when these media reports come out about expensive items, op shops say they actually sell them almost straight away because there are many buyers eager to snap up these bargains. 'Op shop buyers are happy to pay a high price for a preloved item that would have cost them in the thousands, especially when they know the proceeds go towards social good,' Mr Soker explains. 'Most importantly, selling items at fair prices to buyers that want them has a social impact in helping those in need, and op shops raise $1 billion every year and generate a net profit of $180 million for social welfare programs across the country.' The Vinnies spokesperson explains: 'Your purchase could be used to help people experiencing homelessness, women escaping domestic and family violence, or families who are struggling to put food on the table. 'Every purchase should be considered a donation.' This $45 top retails usually for around $200. Picture: On the other side, donors also want to see charity shops receive a fair price for their high-quality or designer items, and will stop donating these items if they are sold too cheaply. 'For example, someone who has generously donated a designer handbag would expect that we would price that bag at a higher value in order to raise more funds for charity,' the Vinnies spokesperson pointed out. Mr Soker says charity shops have noticed that when donors return to see how much their preloved designer items are selling for, they are often disappointed to see that the prices charged are lower than they would have expected. Initiatives are in place to help lower-income shoppers While these higher priced items still make up a small minority of items for sale, and most items are considered affordable – those who are doing it tough can always access initiatives at op shops to help them shop. 'There are often people who turn to our shops who are facing financial constraints or disadvantage,' the spokesperson said. 'We will provide people in need with vouchers to go into our shops and have dignity to shop like any other customer. For anyone who requires further assistance, the St Vincent de Paul Society has Vinnies Support Centres (VSC) across Australia.' While there might be a lot of outrage online about op-shop prices these days, it's important to think about who might actually be behind these sorts of posts. There's a trend for 'resellers' to go around to different op shops and buy in bulk at low prices, to then resell with higher prices on platforms like Depop, Facebook Marketplace, car boot sales and clothing markets. Resellers represent a large proportion of op shop buyers, so it makes sense that they have a commercial interest in driving down prices at op shops for their own personal gain. It's also worth noting that not many people complain about the high prices on resell platforms, even though a lot of their stock is originally bought from an op shop. If thrift shoppers were to see something for $300 on Depop (which is not uncommon), they might automatically assume it's a high-value item. Whereas if the same thing was seen at an op shop, that same person might take a video for TikTok, labelling it a 'rip off' – despite it being the exact same thing. Running a op shop comes at a cost There is a misconception that running op shops is free or low-cost, because items are donated. But like any organisation, op shops also have budgets from an organisational perspective that link back to planning, resourcing, priorities and sustainability. They are also privy to the commercial realities of running a brick-and-mortar store, which means leases, utilities, sorting facilities, and recycling costs. So, before we rush to call out that hundred-dollar dress, let's try and think about who is really losing when we expect charity shops to sell everything, even designer items, for next to nothing.
