Scientists unlock secrets of oldest rocks on Earth

Earth formed about 4.6 billion years ago, during the geological eon known as the Hadean.
The name 'Hadean' comes from the Greek god of the underworld, reflecting the extreme heat that likely characterised the planet at the time.
By 4.35 billion years ago, the Earth might have cooled down enough for the first crust to form and life to emerge.
However, very little is known about this early chapter in Earth's history, as rocks and minerals from that time are extremely rare.
This lack of preserved geological records makes it difficult to reconstruct what the Earth looked like during the Hadean Eon, leaving many questions about its earliest evolution unanswered.
We are part of a research team that has confirmed the oldest known rocks on Earth are located in northern Québec. Dating back 4.3 billion years, these rocks provide a rare and invaluable glimpse into the origins of our planet.
Remains from the Hadean Eon
The Hadean Eon is the first period in the geological timescale, spanning from Earth's formation 4.6 billion years ago and ending around 4.03 billion years ago.
The oldest terrestrial materials ever dated by scientists are extremely rare zircon minerals that were discovered in western Australia. These zircons were formed as early as 4.4 billion years ago, and while their host rock eroded away, the durability of zircons allowed them to be preserved for a long time.
Studies of these zircon minerals has given us clues about the Hadean environment, and the formation and evolution of Earth's oldest crust. The zircons' chemistry suggests that they formed in magmas produced by the melting of sediments deposited at the bottom of an ancient ocean. This suggests that the zircons are evidence that the Hadean Eon cooled rapidly, and liquid water oceans were formed early on.
Other research on the Hadean zircons suggests that the Earth's earliest crust was mafic (rich in magnesium and iron). Until recently, however, the existence of that crust remained to be confirmed.
In 2008, a study led by associate professor Jonathan O'Neil (then a McGill University doctoral student) proposed that rocks of this ancient crust had been preserved in northern Québec and were the only known vestige of the Hadean.
Since then, the age of those rocks — found in the Nuvvuagittuq Greenstone Belt — has been controversial and the subject of ongoing scientific debate.
'Big, old solid rock'
The Nuvvuagittuq Greenstone Belt is located in the northernmost region of Québec, in the Nunavik region above the 55th parallel. Most of the rocks there are metamorphosed volcanic rocks, rich in magnesium and iron. The most common rocks in the belt are called the Ujaraaluk rocks, meaning 'big old solid rock' in Inuktitut.
The age of 4.3 billion years was proposed after variations in neodymium-142 were detected, an isotope produced exclusively during the Hadean through the radioactive decay of samarium-146. The relationship between samarium and neodymium isotope abundances had been previously used to date meteorites and lunar rocks, but before 2008 had never been applied to Earth rocks.
This interpretation, however, was challenged by several research groups, some of whom studied zircons within the belt and proposed a younger age of at most 3.78 billion years, placing the rocks in the Archean Eon instead.
Confirming the Hadean Age
In the summer of 2017, we returned to the Nuvvuagittuq belt to take a closer look at the ancient rocks. This time, we collected intrusive rocks — called metagabbros — that cut across the Ujaraaluk rock formation, hoping to obtain independent age constraints. The fact that these newly studied metagabbros are in intrusion in the Ujaraaluk rocks implies that the latter must be older.
The project was led by masters student Chris Sole at the University of Ottawa, who joined us in the field. Back in the laboratory, we collaborated with French geochronologist Jean-Louis Paquette. Additionally, two undergraduate students — David Benn (University of Ottawa) and Joeli Plakholm (Carleton University) participated to the project.
We combined our field observations with petrology, geochemistry, geochronology and applied two independent samarium-neodymium age dating methods, dating techniques used to assess the absolute ages of magmatic rocks, before these become metamorphic rocks. Both assessments yielded the same result: the intrusive rocks are 4.16 billion years old.
The oldest rocks
Since these metagabbros cut across the Ujaraaluk formation, the Ujaraaluk rocks must be even older, placing them firmly in the Hadean Eon.
Studying the Nuvvuagittuq rocks, the only preserved rocks from the Hadean, provides a unique opportunity to learn about the earliest history of our planet. They can help us understand how the first continents formed, and how and when Earth's environment evolved to become habitable.

BY now, you've probably got the memo . . . ultra-processed foods are 'bad'. Low in nutrients and high in sugar, fat and salt, they are quick and easy to eat, meaning that we absorb lots of calories, and fast. 8 But as is often the case with nutrition, it's not quite as simple as dodging all UPFs all the time. There are good reasons to enjoy them in moderation — they often taste great, are convenient and tend to last longer so can help us save money. No one should be ashamed of eating processed foods, I eat them too — I just ensure they only make up a small part of my diet. The typical weekly shop these days is vastly different from that of 50 years ago. Where once we would visit the greengrocers, butchers, bakers and fishmongers, now we browse the aisles of major supermarkets — shelves bursting with packaged foods and ready-made options. It means our diets contain more processed and ultra-processed foods than ever before. Studies have shown eating too many UPFs can increase the risk of long-term health problems, including heart disease, type 2 diabetes and obesity. One study, published by Central Queensland University in Australia, was able to link UPFs with 32 conditions. The science is still evolving, but in the meantime, it is important to understand how to spot a UPF, the healthy swaps and the steps that you can take to 'unprocess' your plate. Currently the easiest way to tell foods apart is to use the Nova classification, developed by a team of scientists in Brazil. Ultra-processed foods linked to 'higher risk of early death' says nutrition expert It separates foods into four groups, ranging from minimally processed right through to ultra-processed. At the UPF end of the spectrum are foods that have been significantly changed from their original form. They could've been smoked, pasteurised, frozen, or had ingredients such as flavour enhancers, emulsifiers, preservatives or artificial sweeteners, added, for example. Processed meats, like bacon, ham and sausages are some of the 'worst offenders', with well-established health risks. The World Health Organisation classifies them as Group 1 carcinogens, meaning there is strong evidence that regularly eating them increases the risk of certain cancers, in particular bowel cancer. Cakes, pastries and ready meals are also considered UPFs, while fruit and veggies are on the opposite, unprocessed side of the dietary divide. In between, are foods that have had some processing or added ingredients — cheeses, tomato puree and oils, to name a few. It means that your kitchen cupboards are likely bursting with foods you thought were healthy — think ­ protein bars, granola and low-sugar sauces — but that have actually been considerably altered from their ­natural state. So, how can you ensure that your family is eating a healthy balance of foods? Here, I share my top tips and a few of my favourite recipes to 'unprocess' your life, without compromising on tasty treats. Write a shopping list and focus on the five food groups – fruit and vegetables, carbohydrates, dairy (or alternatives), protein and fats. Be wary of, and try to avoid offers that encourage you to stock up on UPFs. Shop online ­– it can help you stick to your well-laid plan and reduce temptation. Pick seasonal fruit and vegetables, and remember frozen or tinned options are just as valid, just check for added sugar or salt. Choose whole, fresh bread like sourdough or a wholegrain loaf from a bakery when possible and freeze it in slices. Shop-bought loaves last for days on end because they've had so many ingredients added – even wholemeal options might just be coloured by caramelised sugar! Opt for pitta breads as they don't contain added palm oil whereas most wraps do. If you choose dairy alternatives like non-dairy milk, avoid sweetened or flavoured versions. When it comes to the cooking itself, stick to high-quality oils like extra virgin olive oil or cold-pressed rapeseed oils. Avoid most ultra-processed spreads. Read the label to check for added ingredients, or just opt for butter in small amounts. The exception here is the spreads designed to help with lowering cholesterol – the plant sterols are scientifically proven to be helpful. Tidy your cupboards. It makes healthy eating much easier and also helps you to break those old habits. Clear everything out then group your staples logically. Use transparent, airtight containers and label everything. Seeing your food encourages healthier choices. MAKE SIMPLE, HEALTHY SWAPS 8 8 ONE way to quickly cut down on the number of UPFs in your diet, is to make these simple swaps: Snack bars for homemade granola bars or nut/date bites. Sugary breakfast cereals for overnight oats or homemade granola. Crisps for homemade popcorn, roasted nuts or seed crackers. Flavoured yoghurts for full-fat natural or Greek yoghurt with fruit or honey. Sweets and biscuits for dark chocolate, dates or healthy homemade bakes. Fizzy drinks and juice for water with lemon, berries or a splash of cordial. Ice cream for blended frozen bananas, or try my cottage cheese and fruit ice cream, or my homemade juice ice lollies. NOW TRY THESE DELICIOUS RECIPES . . . SALAD BAG PASTA 8 THIS is the quickest pasta ever, with the sauce taking less time to make than the pasta takes to cook. It can be made with a variety of leafy greens for maximum iron and there is absolutely zero skill required. The water softens the almonds and adds body to the sauce. To make this extra creamy, try stirring in a couple of tablespoons of ricotta before serving. YOU NEED: 500g fusilli, farfalle or penne 2 garlic cloves, peeled 60g whole almonds 250g watercress, spinach and/or rocket 125g extra virgin olive oil, plus extra for drizzling 4 tbsp grated Parmesan, plus extra to serve 3 tbsp toasted pumpkin seeds 3 tbsp toasted sunflower seeds Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper METHOD: Bring a big pan of salted water to the boil and cook the pasta according to the instructions on the packet. Scoop the pasta into a colander using a slotted spoon and return the pan to the boil. Add the garlic and almonds to the water and simmer for 2-3 minutes until the garlic is just tender. Then add the leaves, pushing them under the water so they're just submerged, then drain into a sieve. Transfer the wilted leaves, garlic, and almonds to a blender or food processor (you can also use an electric hand-held blender), add the olive oil and Parmesan, then blitz to a bright green purée. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Add the sauce back to the pan and set over a low heat, then stir in the cooked pasta to ensure everything is hot. Transfer the pasta to bowls, sprinkle over a little extra Parmesan, toasted seeds and a drizzle of oil before serving. SPICED KETCHUP (Makes: 1 large jar) 8 THIS is very satisfying to make, and tastes less sweet than its store-bought counterpart. YOU NEED: 2 tbsp olive oil or cold-pressed rapeseed oil 1 onion, chopped 1 tbsp chopped fresh ginger 2 garlic cloves, chopped ½ tsp ground cumin ½ tsp ground cinnamon ½ tsp ground allspice ½ tsp sweet paprika ½ tsp ground cloves 4 tbsp apple cider vinegar 4 tbsp dark brown sugar 2 x 400g cans chopped tomatoes Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper METHOD: Drizzle the oil into a large deep saucepan set over a medium heat. When the oil is hot, add the onion and a pinch of salt and cook for ten minutes until soft. Add the ginger and garlic and cook for a couple of minutes until fragrant, then add all the spices and stir them into the onions for 30 seconds. Next add the vinegar, sugar, tomatoes, 1 teaspoon of salt, and a good grinding of pepper and bring to a simmer. Reduce the heat to low, and leave to cook for 45 minutes, stirring often to make sure it isn't catching, until thickened and reduced. Use an electric hand-held blender (or regular blender) to blitz the ketchup until completely smooth, then pass it through a sieve set over a bowl, using a spoon to push it through. Check and adjust the seasoning, if needed. Transfer to a sterilised glass jar or bottle, allow to cool, then store in the fridge for up to three weeks. SEEDY GRANOLA (Makes: About 800g) 8 START your day with an alternative to an ultra-processed breakfast. This granola provides my family and me with lovely healthy fats and fibre for the day ahead. Serve with your preferred milk, or top with fresh fruit and yoghurt. YOU NEED: 175g jumbo oats 175g barley, spelt, or rye flakes (or simply use more jumbo oats) 150g nuts, roughly chopped (almonds, hazelnuts, pecans etc.) 150g seeds (pumpkin, sunflower, sesame, flaxseeds etc.) Optional 1 tbsp ground cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger or cardamom (or a mix) 50g coconut oil 100g maple syrup Optional 4 tbsp almond or peanut butter 75g organic dried fruit, roughly chopped Sea salt METHOD: Preheat the oven to 160C/140C fan/325F and line your largest baking sheet with baking paper. Mix all the dry ingredients, except the dried fruit, in a large bowl. Melt the coconut oil in a small saucepan over a low heat (or melt in the microwave for 30 seconds). Stir in the maple syrup, nut butter (if using), and a pinch of salt, then mix until fully combined. Pour over the dry ingredients and stir until everything is nicely coated. Spread out in an even layer on the baking sheet and bake for 30-35 minutes until golden, stirring and tossing occasionally so it cooks evenly. Leave to cool on the tray, then stir in the dried fruit. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week. You can cook this using your air fryer too. Heat the air fryer to 160C/325F and air fry for 10-12 minutes, tossing occasionally. 8

The universe will not last forever. In fact, scientists have revealed that its lifespan is almost half over already. A team from the US and China have discovered that our universe will reach its 'death date' and stop expanding when it turns 33.3 billion years old. Since the universe is estimated to be roughly 13.8 billion years old right now, that leaves just over 19 billion years to go before everything ends in what scientists call a 'Big Crunch.' While the universe has been expanding outward since the Big Bang, the massive explosion believed to have kickstarted everything in existence, the big crunch would be the reverse - where all matter collapses back into a single point of energy. Researchers from New York's Cornell University and China's Shanghai Jiao Tong University created a new cosmic model that suggests dark energy, the force believed to be driving the universe's expansion, will weaken over time and succumb to gravity. Scientists are still trying to prove that dark energy actually exists, but they believe it acts like a repulsive force, counteracting gravity's desire to pull everything together. If dark energy finally fades after 33.3 billion years, as proposed in the new study, gravity from all the stars, galaxies, and black holes would essentially force the universe to cave in under its own weight. This updated model of the universe now provides a much shorter timeline for our existence, which previous theories suggested might keep going without any limitations. While dark matter is a type of matter which can't be observed or seen, dark energy is a type of energy which doesn't interact in a normal way with matter. Scientists have proposed that these two things might make up the vast majority of the universe NASA's Chelsea Gohd explained in a statement: 'What exactly is dark energy? The short answer is: We don't know. But we do know that it exists, it's making the universe expand at an accelerating rate, and approximately 68.3 to 70 percent of the universe is dark energy.' In the new study, scientists focused on the role of dark energy in this process, using a model called the axion Dark Energy (aDE) model to interpret recent data suggesting that dark energy behaves differently than previously thought. Scientists believed dark energy was a cosmological constant, a fixed, unchanging energy density driving the universe's accelerated expansion indefinitely. This includes a recent study from 2020 in Astronomy & Astrophysics which concluded that the universe's dark energy has a positive cosmological constant, meaning its value never drops off and keeps allowing the universe to grow. However, the new aDE model found dark energy may actually have a negative cosmological constant of around -1.61, which suggests the universe could eventually reach a maximum size and then collapse in a Big Crunch. 'The age of our universe is of foundational importance in cosmology. Since the establishment of the Big Bang Theory, we know it is finite,' the researchers wrote on the pre-print server Arxiv. 'Using the best-fit values of the model as a benchmark, we find the lifespan of our universe to be 33 billion years,' they added in the study submitted for publication in the Journal of Cosmology and Astroparticle Physics. The researchers analyzed recent data from the Dark Energy Survey (DES) and the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI). These projects studied how fast the universe is expanding by looking at things like exploding stars (supernovae) and the way galaxies are spread out. The data revealed that dark energy might not be as steady as several previous studies previously concluded. Study authors used the aDE model, which includes a cosmological constant (a value that affects how the universe expands or contracts) and an ultra-light particle called an axion. By fitting this model to the data, they estimated key values, like the cosmological constant and the equation of state (a measure of dark energy's behavior). They then used these values to predict the universe's future, calculating when it might stop expanding and collapse. Unlike standard models which assumed that dark energy is fixed, this model allowed dark energy to weaken over time as the axion field evolves. An axion field is like an invisible, super-light energy wave that spreads throughout the entire universe, kind of like ripples on a pond but existing everywhere in space. Allowing dark energy to be flexible in this way revealed that this repulsive force could have a 'best-fit value' which is negative, meaning it'll fade away as more time since the Big Bang passes. There's still a lot of uncertainty concerning the end of the universe as we know it. For one, scientists still don't even know what dark energy really is. NASA has come up with four theories about this invisible force that could be holding back the end of time. One possibility is that it's vacuum energy, a constant background energy in space tied to Albert Einstein's cosmological constant. The theory pushes the universe to expand faster but has created a puzzle for modern scientists because its predicted strength doesn't match newer observations. Dark energy could be a changing energy field or fluid, nicknamed quintessence, that fills space and acts opposite to normal matter, varying across time and space to drive the universe's accelerated expansion. NASA has also speculated that dark energy might come from defects in the universe's fabric, like hypothetical one-dimensional 'wrinkles' called cosmic strings, formed when the universe was young, pushing space outward. However, researchers suggest it could be explained by a flaw in Einstein's theory of gravity, meaning the universe's expansion does not rely on dark energy at all.

A common bacteria responsible for almost half of stomach cancer cases in the UK could kill millions in the coming years, top scientists have warned. Called Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), infection with the bug is now estimated to cause 76 per cent of stomach cancers worldwide. Experts warn that many people infected with the bacteria—which infests the lining of the stomach and causes damage to tissue that can lead to cancer—show no obvious symptoms beyond relatively common ailments like indigestion, bloating or nausea. The team is now calling for increased screening for the bacteria, which can be detected in blood and breath test or via a stool sample in a bid save lives. Scientists from the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC)—part of the World Health Organisation —warned if nothing was done nearly 12million people across the globe born between 2008 and 2017 will develop stomach cancer due to H. pylori. This, they said, represented just over three quarters of all cases of the cancer. H. pylori is thought to be spread from person to person via contaminated food and water as well caring for those who become ill. Studies have previously found 40 per cent of Britons are infected with H. pylori, but this is thought to be on the decrease. The vast majority of these patients—between eight-to-nine out of 10—will show no symptoms meaning they have no idea they are infected. H. pylori can rarely cause the development of painful stomach ulcers which is usually when most patients learn they are infected. While the IARC scientists said the majority of the predicted 12million stomach cancer cases linked to the bug will be in Asia, 2million will develop in the Americas and 1.2million in Europe. Data from British charity Cancer Research UK (CRUK) suggests 41 per cent of the UK's 6,500 annual stomach cancer cases are caused by H. pylori, about 2,700 cases a year. Studies suggest being infected with the bacteria increases the risk of developing stomach cancer six-fold, although appropriate treatment like antibiotics, dramatically reduces this. Writing in the journal Nature Medicine, the IARC scientists called for greater investment in population testing for H. pylori to find those silently infected with the bacteria and offer them treatment. In the study itself, the team examined current rates of stomach cancer in 185 countries in 2022 and used that to project the number of cases in the coming years. They also found 75 per cent of stomach cancer cases could be prevented globally by the introduction of screening programmes. Dr Jin Young Park, an author of the study and leader of the gastric cancer prevention team at IARC, said: 'It is essential that health authorities make gastric cancer prevention a priority and accelerate efforts to control it by planning pilot and feasibility projects, including H. pylori screen-and-treat programmes.' But CRUK said Britons should not be too concerned about potential infection with H. pylori as it was not a particularly common bug in the UK. Instead, the charity's health information manager Dr Rachel Orritt said the public needed to beware of more preventable lifestyle factors that increase stomach cancer risk. 'Although this is an important issue worldwide, in the UK other preventable factors cause more cancer cases,' she said. 'Ways to reduce your cancer risk include stopping smoking, keeping a healthy weight, cutting down on alcohol and eating a healthy, balanced diet.' The charity estimates that just over half (54 per cent) of all stomach cancers are preventable. CRUK also noted that stomach cancer cases in the population have fallen by more than quarter over the last decade and are projected to fall further. The main symptoms of stomach cancer include heartburn or acid reflux, having problems swallowing, feeling or being sick, indigestion and burping and feeling full very quickly when eating. These symptoms are common and usually caused by other conditions but patients who have had them for over three weeks should contact their GP for advice, Other symptoms include loss of appetite or losing weight without trying, stomach pain, a lump feeling at the top of the stomach and feeling very tired. About 18 Britons and 83 Americans are diagnosed with stomach cancer each day. The disease kills just over 4,200 patients in the UK each year, with the death toll rising to nearly 11,000 in the US. Only about one in six patients with stomach cancer (17 per cent) are expected to still be alive 10 years after their diagnosis. About one in 92 men and one in 170 women in the UK are estimated to develop stomach cancer in their lifetime.
