Stevie Wonder's MLK Holiday Journey To Be A Documentary

Source: Paras Griffin / Getty The story behind how the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. became a federal holiday with the help of legendary musician Stevie Wonder will now be the subject of a documentary. The multiple Grammy Award winner is partnering with TIME Studios to produce the unnamed documentary film, which will explore Wonder's personal tie to the movement to get a national holiday to recognize Dr. King's birthday, which became official when then President Ronald Reagan signed the bill making it a law in 1983. Stevie Wonder will appear on-screen in the film to share his experiences during that time, which will also include archival footage that has never been seen by the public. One key element of the documentary will be the making of 'Happy Birthday,' a song crafted as an ode to Dr. King on the 1980 Hotter Than July album. The song is now a fixture at birthday celebrations across the globe, no matter the scale. Oscar nominee Traci A. Curry, who has directed the powerful documentary ATTICA as well as the NatGeo mini series Hurricane Katrina: Race Against Time , has been tabbed to direct the film. Stevie Wonder's Eyes 'n' Sound production company will serve as executive producers along with Time Studios. In a statement, the musical icon said: 'I'm excited to tell the story of the making of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. More importantly, I want us to learn and remember this story with today's eye and understanding. If we truly understood how this bill came to be, then we will really appreciate the power of the people.' Lynne Benioff, co-owner and co-chair of TIME Studios expressed their gratitude in working on the project as well in a statement, adding: 'We are honored to help bring this important chapter of history to light and to work with Stevie Wonder in telling the story of how his artistry and activism helped shape a national movement. We believe this film will spark meaningful conversations about the profound impact one person's voice and vision can have on our culture and world.' Shakira, Maren Morris, more stars speak out on 'devastating' Texas flooding

Shakira may be busy on the road, but she's taking a moment to wrap her arms around the Lone Star State. As Texas battles a deadly surge of flash flooding, the Colombian pop superstar, who's been crisscrossing North America on her Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran World Tour, announced on July 5 that she was donating proceeds from her San Antonio concert to Catholic Charities of San Antonio. "Dear San Antonio, our hearts and prayers are with those affected by the flood in central Texas," Shakira wrote in an X post. "We are donating a portion of tonight's show proceeds to Catholic Charities of San Antonio, who are providing disaster relief to the families impacted." The Grammy-winning singer, 48, also encouraged her fans to assist relief efforts by donating to the humanitarian aid organization. "Your help is important and appreciated," she added. Historic flash floods swept across central Texas after unrelenting rainfall on Thursday, July 3, and Friday, July 4, triggered the ravaging flooding. Local authorities said at least 80 people have died. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott noted at a July 6 news conference that search and rescue efforts were still underway as at least 41 people remained unaccounted for. As of July 6, authorities had recovered the bodies of 40 adults and 28 children in Kerr County, where the worst of the flooding occurred, Kerr County Sheriff Larry Leitha announced. Forecasters expect several more inches of rain and warned of additional flooding and a worsening of conditions on the ground. Here's what other stars are saying about the natural disaster. Michael Douglas says he has 'no real intentions' of returning to acting

"If something special came up, I'd go back, but otherwise, no," he said. 3:24 Michael Douglas is pressing pause on acting -- at least for now. While speaking recently at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival in the Czech Republic, where he presented a newly restored print of Miloš Forman's classic 1975 film "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest," which Douglas co-produced, the Oscar-winning actor opened up about his future in the industry. 'I have not worked since 2022 purposefully because I realized I had to stop,' Douglas said, according to Variety. 'I had been working pretty hard for almost 60 years and I did not want to be one of those people who dropped dead on the set.' He continued, 'I have no real intentions of going back. I say I'm not retired because if something special came up, I'd go back, but otherwise, no.' Douglas, who will turn 81 years old in September, last appeared on the big screen in 2023's "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania," and most recently portrayed Benjamin Franklin in the 2024 Apple TV+ miniseries "Franklin." He's also set to star alongside his son, Cameron Douglas, in the upcoming film "Looking Through Water," which has yet to receive a release date. The conversation during the Karlovy Vary Film Festival press conference also touched on Douglas' past health struggles. Reflecting on his 2010 battle with stage 4 tongue cancer, he shared that he opted for chemotherapy and radiation over surgery, which would have involved removing part of his jaw and threatened his ability to speak and act. 'Stage 4 cancer is not a holiday but there aren't many choices, are there?' he said. 'I went with the program, involving chemo and radiation, and was fortunate. The surgery would have meant not being able to talk and removing part of my jaw and that would have been limiting as an actor.' Douglas, who is married to longtime wife, actress Catherine Zeta-Jones, also revealed that he has 'one little independent movie' in the works but joked that these days that 'in the spirit of maintaining a good marriage,' he's 'happy to play the wife' to Jones.
