Ireland performance in Georgia 'won't be perfect'

BBC News03-07-2025
Interim head coach Paul O'Connell says a youthful Ireland's performance in Georgia on Saturday "won't be perfect".O'Connell has handed debuts to second row Darragh Murray and wing Tommy O'Brien, while four more players could make their first Ireland appearance off the bench. Ireland are without the 16 players who are in Australia with the British and Irish Lions, and captain Caelan Doris and Robbie Henshaw are missing through injury. While former Ireland lock O'Connell says preparations have "been good", he says learning from mistakes will be part of the process in Tbilisi."We're aware of that even when we play with the most experienced internationals," O'Connell said."We're trying to make the players aware of that as well is really important and we just have to crack on."Jacob Stockdale is the most-capped player with 39 caps, while Stuart McCloskey is the only player over the age of 30. Eleven of the starting 15 have fewer than 10 caps, something that also applies to all but one of the replacements, and O'Connell admits there will likely be some nerves in his players."That's part of it, you almost have to experience that to learn how to figure it out," he said."That's why we wanted them in that two-week prep window as that's what international rugby is all about. "They experience how to come in and learn quickly and how to get aligned quickly."Ultimately until you are in the middle of it and you make a mistake, it's only by getting on the field and experiencing it that you really learn."O'Connell added that facing Georgia, who defeated Japan and Tonga last year and narrowly lost to Italy, will be a "real challenge" for his players. "It's not a Test match of small significance, it's a match where they have to perform."They are going to learn a lot, we are going to learn a lot."

Lando Norris' frank admission after delayed Belgian GP

Oscar Piastri secured victory at the rain-affected Belgian Grand Prix, extending his championship lead over McLaren team-mate Lando Norris. The start of the 13th round at Spa-Francorchamps was delayed by 80 minutes due to heavy rain and poor visibility. Piastri overtook pole-sitter Norris on the first racing lap with a committed move through Eau Rouge and up the Kemmel Straight. Norris admitted Piastri showed more commitment and deserved the win, acknowledging his own 'scrappy exit' from the opening corner. Race officials exercised caution due to the track's history of fatalities, including Dutch 18-year-old Dilano Van 't Hoff in 2023.

Spanish media hit out at Chloe Kelly for 'unnecessary' and 'cocky gesture' after scoring the winning penalty for England in Euros final win over Spain

Chloe Kelly 's 'unnecessary' and 'cocky gesture' after scoring the winning penalty for England against Spain has been denounced by Spanish media. The Arsenal winger confidently stepped up and dispatched the decisive spot-kick to secure victory for the Lionesses over La Roja in the final of the women's European Championship on Sunday night. Kelly, who scored the winner in England's 2022 Euros final win over Germany, 'unnecessarily' diverted her path after smashing the ball past Cata Coll, according to Spanish outlet Dario AS. In the commentary that accompanied a short clip of the climatic moment, published on their website, Kelly's decision to make a b-line for the England supporters in the corner was 'cocky' and uncalled-for. 'This is unnecessary, my friend: Kelly's cocky gesture to Cata Coll after scoring the decisive penalty,' they wrote. 'The England specialist changed her run during her penalty celebration to get past the goalkeeper she had just beaten.' Kelly's introduction part-way through the first half changed the momentum of a game that Spain dominated and looked set to win. The 27-year-old, who - like her Gunners team-mates - adds Euros glory to Champions League success, assisted Alessia Russo's 57th-minute equaliser after Mariona Caldentey's 25th-minute opener. The two sides could not be separated after 120 minutes of action, leading to the dreaded penalty shootout. England were thankful for the contributions of goalkeeper Hannah Hampton, who produced two saves and saw another go wide of the post in the 3-1 shoot-out win. In Dario AS' full match report they insisted that England, who were defeated by Spain in the final of the women's World Cup two years ago, 'robbed' their Iberian opponents. 'The dream ends in a nightmare,' they added. 'Spain lost the European Championship on penalties. England tied a match that Spain largely dominated. 'History is made by victories, and also by defeats. Spain fell in the Euro Cup final but left its name sealed in gold. England robbed them of their dream; the world champions couldn't close the circle they began to write two years ago in Sydney. 'They couldn't have been crueler in the penalty shootout, tossing a few dice in the air.' Victory completes an incredible hat-trick of triumphs in the competition for head coach Sarina Wiegman after wins in 2022 with England and 2017 with her native Netherlands.
