Fine Gael TD says lower VAT rate for hospitality sector will boost small businesses
Speaking on Sunday, John Clendennen described small businesses as 'the backbone of the Irish economy' as he reiterated his support for the reduced rate for food and catering services.
Minister for Finance Paschal Donohoe revealed in February that he hoped to announce the 9 per cent rate on budget day for the food and catering sector, where he believes it can have the biggest impact.
However, he said the overall cost of such a move would be €675m per year. The government previously cut the rate to 9 per cent between November 2020 and August 2023 at a cost of more than €1.3bn.
Deputy Clendennen, who is also president of the Vintners' Federation of Ireland, said the proposed VAT rate 'would make a huge difference' to the hospitality sector.
"Having worked in the hospitality sector I know how important it is to support our small and medium businesses in our towns, villages, and cities," he said.
"Small businesses are the backbone of the Irish economy. They are at the heart of every community, fuelling our local economies, and providing good quality, stable jobs. 'Struggling to keep afloat'
"Fine Gael has been unwavering in its support for Irish businesses. My colleagues Minister Peter Burke and Minister Paschal Donohoe want to ensure we help the hospitality sector deal with the ever-increasing costs of doing business and the ever-diminishing margins.
"Minister Burke is bringing forward a Competitiveness Action Plan with the Tánaiste Simon Harris before Summer, which will contain measures to support our SME sector.
"The government has done a lot to support businesses, but we need to do more and having the 9 per cent VAT rate would make a huge difference for the hospitality sector.
"Businesses across the country are facing challenges, that's why we decided to pause the increase of statutory sick days from five to seven and delayed the introduction of a living wage until 2029.
"We can't ignore that there are cafes, restaurants, and other hospitality businesses across Ireland that are struggling to keep afloat.
"Fine Gael has always backed business, especially our small and medium-sized enterprises and we want to see them thrive with a 9 per cent VAT rate."

Pope Leo exhorts crowd of million Catholic youth to spread their faith
Pope Leo has celebrated the largest event yet of his nearly three-month tenure, encouraging a crowd of more than a million Catholic young people gathered in a field on the outskirts of Rome to spread their faith. Amid shouts of "Viva il Papa" (Long live the Pope) from young people dressed in colourful t-shirts and waving national flags at the Tor Vergata field, Leo led a mass that capped a special week of events meant to energise Catholic youth. Leo also lamented the ongoing wars in Gaza and Ukraine in an appeal at the end of the mass, and called on the youths to help create a better world. "We are with the young people of Gaza, we are with the young people of Ukraine," the pontiff said. "My young brothers and sisters, you are the sign that a different world is possible," he said. "A world of fraternity and friendship, where conflicts are not resolved with weapons but with dialogue." Many of the youths attending the event spent the night outside in the field, to be ready for the Pope's arrival at 7.45am (6.45am Irish time) in advance of heat expected to reach 30C later today. "It's amazing to see just how big the world church is, and how many people are here ... and (are) on fire to see the pope," said Rita Piendl, 19, who came from Germany. "We want to truly spread hope and love to the world and we really want to make a difference for the better," she added. The Catholic Church, which numbers more than 1.4 billion members globally, has grown slightly in recent years but has experienced sliding adherence in Europe. Today's Mass was part of a week-long series of events in Rome for Catholic youth, tied to the ongoing Catholic Holy Year.

BBC faces criticism over delay in paying court-ordered damages to Gerry Adams
The BBC has been criticised for not yet having paid court-ordered damages to former Sinn Féin president Gerry Adams. The corporation lost a major defamation case earlier this year after Mr Adams took them to court over a 2016 episode of its Spotlight programme and an accompanying online story. They contained an allegation that Mr Adams sanctioned the killing of former Sinn Féin official Denis Donaldson. Mr Adams denied any involvement. In May, a jury at the High Court found in his favour and awarded him €100,000 after determining that was the meaning of words included in the programme and article. The BBC, which was found by the jury not to have acted in good faith nor in a fair and reasonable way, was also ordered to pay the former Sinn Féin leader's legal costs. After the decision, the broadcaster's legal team was granted a stay in the payment of the full award as it took time to consider an appeal, subject to paying half the damages (€50,000) and €250,000 towards solicitors' fees. In June, the BBC confirmed it would not pursue an appeal. However, it is understood that by August 1 the BBC had not paid the damages. Mr Adams previously indicated that he planned to donate what he receives to good causes. He specified that these would include for children in Gaza as well as groups in the Irish language sector and those who are homeless. A source close to Mr Adams told the PA news agency: 'The delay by the BBC is deplorable and it should move speedily towards discharging the order of the court.' A BBC spokesperson said: 'Total costs will be finalised and payable in due course.'
