Selangor ramps up bid to be top medical tourism hub
KLANG: Selangor is moving at top speed to strengthen its position as a regional medical tourism hub.
State government and tourism committee chairman Datuk Ng Suee Lim said intense promotions have been carried out for the past two years to push Selangor's 42 private hospitals and the world-class health services available here.
'Currently, Selangor is number three after Penang and Melaka in the medical tourism hierarchy. '
According to Ng, Selangor was targeting medical tourists from Indonesia as Malaysia was their destination of choice for second opinions, health screening, cosmetic surgery as well as treatment and surgeries for various ailments.
He said affluent Indonesians medical tourists do not usually travel alone, but would bring their families, caregivers and domestic helpers.
'So, while seeking treatment and medical consultation, they also stay in top hotels, visit tourist attractions as well as carry out extensive shopping.
'All these activities are a boon for the state's tourism industry.'
Given that medical tourists from Jakarta and Medan prefer going to Penang and Melaka due to the close travel proximity, Ng said in addition to wooing them, Selangor was also exploring other locations in Indonesia.
'We teamed-up with the Malaysia Healthcare Travel Council and have gone to promote Selangor as a medical tourism hub in Surabaya, Yogyakarta and Makassar.
'We had booths to showcase our private hospitals, the facilities and expertise they offer.'
He added that in pursuit of Indonesian medical tourists, Selangor has even conceptualised a campaign with its own theme song dubbed Liburan Sehat Ya Di Selangor Aja! (Enjoy a Healthy Vacation in Selangor!) in conjunction with Visit Selangor Year 2025 and Visit Malaysia 2026.
He said this was also a good time to woo Indonesian medical tourists who frequent Singapore but are finding it too expensive now due to the strength of the republic's currency.
He added that due to intense promotions, medical tourists to Selangor has increased by more than 10% in the first six months of this year.
Association of Private Hospitals Malaysia president Datuk Dr Kuljit Singh said medical tourists came to Malaysia mainly for fertility, gastroenterology and oncology treatments.
He added that roughly about 80% came for treatment while the rest came for health screening with the bulk of the medical tourists coming from Indonesia, China and India.

Alpha IVF opens satellite clinic in Surabaya, its second in Indonesia
PETALING JAYA: Fertility care specialist Alpha IVF Group Bhd has opened its second satellite clinic in Surabaya, Indonesia, its second in the country. The expansion forms part of the group's initial public offering roadmap to establish four satellite clinics in Indonesia, strengthening its regional growth strategy and deepening its footprint in the country, which is one of the group's fastest-growing international markets. Group managing director Datuk Dr Colin Lee Soon Soo said Surabaya was strategically chosen to expand the company's reach into East and Central Java, where it sees strong potential for growth in fertility treatment. 'Our first satellite clinic in Jakarta began showing results in less than three months of operations, which gives us strong confidence in the scalability and effectiveness of our satellite model. 'We believe the Surabaya clinic will build on this momentum and further increase patient referrals to our flagship centres in Malaysia,' he said in a statement. The new clinic is strategically located within the Womba Women's and Children Specialist Clinic in Surabaya. Situatedin the heart of East Java, Surabaya – the second largest city in Indonesia after Jakarta – was selected to meet the growing demand for assisted reproductive services across the region, including nearby urban centres such as Solo, Semarang and Yogyakarta. The clinic will serve as a key referral and patient coordination centre, offering initial consultations and fertility assessments, while seamlessly connecting patients to Alpha IVF's flagship centres in Malaysia for comprehensive treatment. Alpha IVF's first Indonesian satellite clinic, located in Pantai Indah Kapuk, Jakarta, commenced operations in May and has already shown encouraging results. In less than three months, 29 couples have been referred to the group's Malaysia-based centres, demonstrating early validation of the group's regional strategy. Alpha IVF expects its Indonesia-based satellite clinics, including those in Jakarta and Surabaya, to make a meaningful contribution to cross-border patient volume and revenue growth. Apart from Indonesia, Alpha IVF currently operates in Malaysia, Singapore and China. The group has pioneered numerous innovations leading to improved pregnancy rates and is actively involved in utilising advanced artificial intelligence technology to enhance embryo selection for higher IVF success rates.

RM50m in tourism, culture grants almost used up, says Tourism Malaysia
PASIR GUDANG: The federal government's RM50 million allocation for grants to boost tourism and cultural activities has nearly run dry due to overwhelming response from industry players and event organisers. Tourism Malaysia Southern Region deputy director Awang Shawal Awang Sulaiman said the strong response to the Tourism Sector Support Grant (GSSP) and Cultural Sector Support Grant (GSSK) bodes well for the run-up to Visit Malaysia 2026. "We did not expect this level of interest. "It's barely halfway through the year but the RM20 million under GSSK and RM30 million under GSSP have been heavily subscribed since applications opened in January. "We are confident the grants will continue next year. For now, we urge more organisers to apply before the end of the year," he said after launching the Visit Malaysia 2026 and Visit Johor 2026 (VJ2026) vehicle stickers for tourism buses at Taman Mawar here today. Present were state Tourism, Arts and Culture director Norazlin Abu Mutalib and Tourism Johor director Mohammad Nazrul Abd Rahim. The initiative, organised with the Johor Tour Bus Operators Association, involved affixing campaign stickers on 70 tourism vehicles to raise public and visitor awareness. Awang Shawal said multiple agencies were committed to making VM2026 and VJ2026 successful through strategic partnerships and aggressive promotional drives. "This collaborative approach will strengthen Malaysia's tourism ecosystem and unlock more economic opportunities, especially for locals and industry stakeholders. "We are confident these efforts will reaffirm Malaysia's position as a premier global destination, with Johor as the gateway for Southeast Asian tourists," he said.
