Tree of the Year: Scottish sycamore and ash make top ten shortlist
The Woodland Trust announced the shortlist of ten of the UK's best trees on Monday, including not one, but two in Scotland.
Edinburgh's famous Wilfred Owen Sycamore, which is over 100 years old, made the shortlist.
The tree, which sits at the entrance of Edinburgh Napier University, has a rich history connected to famed war poet Wilfred Owen.
The site where the tree is planted was formerly a military psychiatric hospital, known as Craiglockhart War Hospital, and in 1917, Owen was sent here, having suffered shell-shock on the Western Front. He met Siegfried Sassoon at the hospital, who became his literary mentor and encouraged him to write.
The Woodland Trust said the pair may have sat beneath this sycamore in the hospital grounds during their rehabilitation.
When a large branch of the tree was removed for safety reasons in 2014, local instrument maker Steve Burnett crafted a violin from the wood to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the war's outbreak and honour Owen's memory.
The violin has one of Owen's poems inscribed inside it and has been played at many concerts and events.
Also included in the list is Glasgow's over 175-year-old ash tree on Argyle Street. Tree Wise Urban Forestry/Woodland Trust The lone Argyle Street Ash is a much-loved local landmark.
The tree, also known locally as The Lone Tree of Finnieston or The Only Tree on Argyle Street, stands alongside the tenements on one of the city's busiest streets.
In recognition of its cultural and ecological value to the city, the tree was the first in Glasgow to be protected by a tree preservation order.
In his 1935 book, From Glasgow's Treasure Chest, James Cowan records it as 'a very tall ash tree, its highest branches reaching far above the top windows of the tenement. It is quite the most graceful ash I have seen.'
Belle and Sebastian's Stuart Murdoch is among the tree's more modern admirers: 'It must have good genes to have made it. It's hip now because it's in Finnieston, but I say it was always cool.'
Scottish trees have proven popular in the competition, with the Skipinnish Oak of Lochaber in Scotland winning UK Tree of the Year in 2024.
Voting is open now and closes on September 19, with the winning tree announced on September 26.
The winner will go on to represent the UK in the next European Tree of the Year competition. The Borrowdale Yews, Seathwaite, Cumbria

King Charles delights staff as he visits luxury vegan chocolate shop in Scotland

More than a thousand people stood behind crash barriers to see the Monarch as he toured the town on July 3. He wore his own King Charles III tartan kilt especially for the visit, as he stopped by a number of shops in the area. And one place the King decided to pop into was Fetcha Chocolates - a store which specialises in vegan confectionery. The shop, located on the town's Main Street, is famous for its incredible treats since it opened in 2022. Owner Fiona McArthur was delighted by his visit and said she never "in a million years" expected to have royalty in her store. Such a treat to welcome the King... Most recently, she received widespread recognition for her incredible 'Everyone Wins' gift bags at the Oscars in 2024, which were full of movie-themed chocolates and were worth over $170,000. And staff actually created a special box of chocolates for King Charles which they gave to him when he visited the store. It combined many of the Oscars-themed flavours as well as a number of flavours from their new The Cannes Collection, which was designed specifically for this year's festival. After a formal introduction, Charles can be heard telling Fiona in the short clip, 'I've been hearing about your chocolates.' "We discussed how far the business has come in these last few years, and he left with some of our Awards Collection chocolates. One person said: "What an honour! I would've died of excitement." Another added: "Congratulations!!! This is a testament to your achievements... Well done to you all!" Someone else posted: "How wonderful! Congratulations Fiona". SPECIAL TREAT STAFF prepared a special box of chocolates for the King ahead of his visit earlier this month. The box included some of the movie-themed treats that were created especially for the Oscars in 2024. These treats featured flavours inspired by films, including Poor Things, Killers of the Flower Moon, Barbie, Maestro, The Holdovers, and Oppenheimer. The Oppenheimer chocolate has become a fan favourite and combines dark chocolate, chilli, and popping candy. The box also included many treats from the Fetcha Chocolates' The Cannes Collection. These were Yuzu Ganache, Lucuma Caramel, Cappuccino, Matcha and Lime, Mexican Hot Chocolate, and even Haggis Spice. While a fourth shared: "Phenomenal - something above and beyond even the amazing Oscars and Cannes experiences. A compliment to your hard work and excellent product." And a fifth chimed in: "This is so special, you're amazing". Fetcha Chocolates wasn't the only place that the King visited during his tour. He first visited the local farmers' market, where he watched sheep being sheared, met representatives from charity and community organisations in the town hall, and finally visited the harbour area. And then Charles kept out the cold with a dram of whisky on his visit to the historic town. Charles readily sipped an award-winning 25-year-old single malt by the Glen Scotia distillery. Lewis Capaldi says unfinished Glastonbury set in 2023 was ‘blessing in disguise'
The 28-year-old said in an interview with YouTuber Theo Von that he promised himself the set would be 'the last time I'm going to play a gig for a long time' and that he would seek help afterwards. The Scottish singer said: 'When I got off stage, everyone else around me was a bit like, 'Oh, this is the worst thing ever', and I had this weird sort of (like) a weight had been lifted, like, 'Oh, now this thing's happened and I have to get help'. 'I had been putting it off because, funnily enough, a few weeks prior to that show, last minute we were playing in Chicago, and I had a very similar episode (which) was probably even worse… I couldn't come back on stage and finish the song. 'I was, like, backstage, convulsing and having this crazy panic attack, mental episode, I was really, really bad, way worse than what happened to Glastonbury, because Glastonbury is such a big stage and a big moment.' Capaldi announced a break from touring shortly after the Glastonbury performance, but made a surprise return to the festival last month with a 35-minute set on the Pyramid Stage. He continued: 'In a weird way, it's probably the best thing that happened to me at that moment at Glastonbury in 2023, because I wouldn't have stopped otherwise. 'I was really bad for not saying no to things, feeling like this is going to pass me by if I don't say yes to all this amazing stuff coming at me, and I have to catch it all and sort of get it all done. 'So I said yes to way too much, and I took way too much on, and everyone around me was asking me, 'Are you sure this is OK?'. I was like, 'Yeah, I'm fine', but yes, Glastonbury 2023 was maybe the most important day of my life, to be honest, because I wouldn't have stopped. 'It's like someone upstairs was like, 'This has to happen now', otherwise, I don't want to think about where I would be now, if I hadn't, because we were meant to go to Australia and stuff like that, it could have been really horrible. 'I dread to think what would've happened to me otherwise, so it was a bit of a blessing in disguise.' During last month's Glastonbury show, Capaldi performed his new track Survive, which has since gone to number one on the UK singles chart. He ended the performance with Someone You Loved, the track that Glastonbury crowds helped him to sing when he struggled in 2023. The singer has also announced a comeback UK and Ireland tour at venues including The O2 in London, Cardiff's Utilita Arena and Dublin's 3Arena, as well as in Glasgow and Aberdeen, in September. Tourette syndrome causes sudden, repetitive sounds or movements and, while there is no cure, treatment can help manage the tics, according to the NHS website. Capaldi has had six UK number one singles, including Before You Go, Pointless and Wish You The Best, and both of his studio albums have reached number one in the UK albums chart.
