Evenepoel abandons Tour de France
The Soudal-Quick Step rider, who was third overall, stepped off his bike and entered his team car midway through the ascent of the Col du Tourmalet, the first of four climbs on the day's menu.
Evenepoel had struggled in recent days, losing time in the first Pyrenean stage and in Friday's uphill individual time trial.
"Yesterday was bad, today was worse," the Olympic champion, who won the stage 5 individual time trial, said on Friday.
It got even worse today as the 25-year-old could not sustain the pace in the gruelling ascent to the Tourmalet (19km at 7.4 per cent) as dozens of riders whizzed past him.
After giving his bottle to a child on the side of the road, Evenepoel threw in the towel, a year after finishing third overall on his Tour de France debut.

"The last thing he wanted is to be sat in the stand watching, that wasn't fair to him. But I'm confident he will be a Newcastle player come the end of the window. "It's difficult for me to give 100% clarity on any player. Alex is happy at Newcastle, he loves the players, the staff, the team. I'm confident he'll be here at the start of the season. "Yes, I've had discussions with him but that's not abnormal. I respect a player's career and how short it is. Alex has been really good, he's trained really well and I realise there'll be noise around him." Newcastle, who qualified for Champions League football after finishing fifth in the Premier League last season, will next be in action against Arsenal in a friendly match in Singapore next Sunday. (Reuters) -Santiago Lencina struck twice as River Plate hammered 10-man Instituto ACC 4-0 on Saturday, making it two wins from two matches for the visitors in Argentina's Clausura championship. Facundo Colidio put River ahead in the 44th minute with a deflected shot before 19-year-old Lencina doubled their lead just moments before halftime with a left-foot strike that deflected off Instituto centre back Fernando Alarcon.
