So suggested the far-right tech tycoon on his social network X on Monday when he floated the idea of expanding Tesla's newly-opened Los Angeles restaurant into a nationwide network. "If our retro-futuristic diner turns out well, which I think it will, Tesla will establish these in major cities around the world, as well as at Supercharger sites on long distance routes," said Musk."An island of good food, good vibes & entertainment, all while Supercharging!" Musk, currently estimated to be the world's richest person, has a long history of making ambitious promises for new services or products that never actually pan out. Still, at least one Tesla diner is now open for business on Santa Monica Boulevard in Hollywood, featuring 32 fast charging stations, balcony dining, and two 45-foot LED movie screens that sync to the sound system in Tesla cars. At a pre-launch event on Saturday, patrons were even served popcorn by a prototype of Tesla's 'Optimus' robot — albeit probably remotely operated by a human worker, as was the case when Tesla demonstrated the bots last October. "This will become normal in a few years," Musk claimed. On Monday, Musk also said he would open a second diner at Starbase, the south Texas launch complex run by his rocket company SpaceX. The idea of a Tesla diner has been in the works for years, with Musk describing it in August 2023 as "Grease meets the Jetsons with Supercharging". The food is classic American diner fare: burgers, hot dogs, milkshakes and fries. Tesla has suffered a drastic worldwide drop in sales and profits this year due to increasing competition from more affordable brands and political blowback from Elon Musk's alliance with President Donald Trump. After donating more than $291m to Donald Trump and other Republicans in the 2024 election cycle, the mogul personally took a chainsaw to federal government departments as effective head of DOGE. Since then, has done little to improve the company's share price, which dropped as low as 42 per cent from the start of the year before recovering modestly.

Nine households control 15% of wealth in Silicon Valley as inequality widens

Economic inequality has reached a staggering milestone in Silicon Valley: just nine households hold 15% of the region's wealth, according to new research from San Jose State University. A mere 0.1% of residents hold 71% of the tech hub's wealth. The findings come from the 2025 'Silicon Valley Pain Index', a report published by SJSU's Human Rights Institute each year since 2020. The report aims to quantify 'structured inequalities' in Silicon Valley, and measures 'pain' as 'both personal and community distress or suffering'. This year's index reports that the wealth divide has widened in Silicon Valley at double the rate of the whole United States over the past decade. The nine wealthiest households in the valley control $683.2bn – a $136bn increase over the past year. At the same time, 110,000 households reported nearly none or no assets. The cost of living in Silicon Valley has risen as well: renters must earn $136,532 to afford an apartment – the highest in the nation. The report ranked San Jose No 4 in 'impossibly unaffordable' cities worldwide (after Hong Kong, Sydney and Vancouver). Yet, no cities in Silicon Valley have raised the minimum wage in the past three years. The report finds that 54,582 low-income households do not have access to an affordable home in San Jose and that homelessness grew 8.2% from 2023. When they created the Silicon Valley Pain Index in 2020, shortly after the nationwide Black Lives Matter protests, San Jose State University researchers were inspired by the Katrina Pain Index, which aimed to quantify the injustices New Orleans residents faced after Hurricane Katrina. The index continues to show stark racial inequalities. Hispanic workers in San Jose, Sunnyvalle and Santa Clara can expect to make 33 cents for every $1 their white peers take home. And although shareholders have voiced commitments to diversity, equity and inclusion, only 3% of employees working in research and development at Apple are Black (compared to 6% Hispanic/Latinx, 36% white and 50% Asian). Meanwhile, police violence remains a real concern – even years after the Black Lives Matter protests. Ten people died in police custody in the Santa Clara county sheriff's office in 2024 – the highest in two decades. And San Jose reported five office involved shootings, up three from 2023. However, the report did note certain improvements in the Silicon Valley area – including a decrease in police use of force incidents in San Jose, an expansion in services to prevent homelessness and environmental sustainability programs.

NXP second-quarter revenue falls 6%

July 21 (Reuters) - Chipmaker NXP Semiconductors (NXPI.O), opens new tab posted a 6% drop in second-quarter revenue on Monday, led by weakness in communications and infrastructure segment amid broader market softness. NXP's revenue for the second quarter fell 6.4% to $2.93 billion, although it still narrowly beat analyst expectations of $2.90 billion, according to data compiled by LSEG. NXP's chips are used for high-speed digital processing utilized in sectors such as automotive, manufacturing, telecommunications and the Internet of Things (IoT). The shares of the company fell 5% in trading after the bell. Revenue from its communication and infrastructure segment fell 27% to $320 million in the quarter. Industrial and IoT revenue fell 11%, while the automotive segment was flat. For the third quarter, the company expects revenue to be between $3.05 billion and $3.25 billion, the midpoint of which is above analysts' estimates of $3.07 billion.
