This Unexpected Wedding Movie Was Just Named One of the Best Films of the 21st Century
This week, the New York Times released their list of the top 100 movies of the 21st century, as selected by notable directors, actors, and Hollywood insiders.
Bridesmaids, the hit 2011 wedding film starring Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, and Melissa McCarthy, was ranked as number 32.
The film beat out other beloved wedding movies released since January 1, 2000, like Wedding Crashers, 27 Dresses, and Bride Wars.As far as classic wedding films go, movies like Father of the Bride, My Best Friend's Wedding, and Four Weddings and a Funeral are generally consider to be some of the very best. What do these flicks all have in common—beyond a wedding serving as significant part of the plot, that is? They were all released in the 20th century. There have been more contemporary wedding hits, though, like Wedding Crashers, The Wedding Singer, The Wedding Planner, and 27 Dresses, which were all released in the last 25 years. But the modern wedding movie that officially reigns supreme is none other than the 2011 cult-classic Bridesmaids. That's not just our opinion—the movie was just named one of the top 100 best movies of the 21st century by the New York Times.
The list, which was released in full today, June 27, highlights the top 100 movies from the last 25 years. To compile their winners, the New York Times asked 500 "influential directors, actors, and other notable names in Hollywood and around the world" to cast ballots for their favorite films released after January 1, 2000. Voters included names like Sofia Coppola, Barry Jenkins, and Julianne Moore.

One standout winner spotted by the editors at BRIDES was the 2011 cult-classic wedding film Bridesmaids, which was ranked at number 32. Starring Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Rose Byrne, and Melissa McCarthy, the hilarious movie follows a group of women as they prepare to support their pal, Lillian (played by Rudolph) as she prepares to walk down the aisle. Wiig stars as Annie, Lillian's longtime best friend and maid of honor, who instantly feels competitive with the bride's newest girlfriend, Helen (played by Byrne).
The movie follows the group doing everything from the engagement party and choosing bridesmaids' dresses (an unforgettable scene for those in the know) to planning pre-nuptial events and trying (and failing) to head to Las Vegas for a bachelorette party.
"What surprises is how deeply felt this Paul Feig film is: Annie is sad and jealous, unable to get out of her own way," The New York Times writes of why the film made their list of the top 100 of the century. "We've all been there, though perhaps not with explosive diarrhea." The movie is the only one on the list centered around a wedding, beating out other contemporary favorites people might expect like My Big Fat Greek Wedding and Bride Wars.

Is this the best movie of the 21st century? 500 Hollywood power players think so.
The people have spoken, and the best movie released since Jan. 1, 2000, has been chosen. And by people, we mean the 500 or so actors, directors, writers and other Hollywood power players The New York Times surveyed for its 100 best movies of the 21st century ranking, which came out with its top 20 on June 27. The likes of Pamela Anderson, Nicholas Sparks, Stephen King, Simu Liu, Sofia Coppola, Danielle Brooks, Brian Cox, Ava DuVernay, Molly Ringwald, Rachel Zegler and Mel Brooks had their say — and yes, you can even see each of their top 10 picks, Letterboxd style. Oscar-winning director Coppola apparently took a shining to the 2004 Pixar classic (and fellow Oscar winner) "The Incredibles," while Julianne Moore admitted she's not above a raunchy comedy like "Superbad" and "The 40-Year-Old Virgin." And Sparks isn't only watching soppy romances; he's also enjoying dramas like "Inception" and "Gladiator." Undeserved Oscar winners – and the ones that should have won What's the best movie released since 2000? None other than Bong Joon Ho's "Parasite," which in 2020 became the first ever non-English film to earn the best picture Oscar, ranked as the No. 1 highest-voted film in the NYT's survey. And no wonder, because it earned an eye-boggling 99% "fresh" rating from nearly 500 film reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. In 2019, USA TODAY's film critic Brian Truitt was close to giving the social commentary thriller full marks (he ended up giving three and a half of four stars). The Korean film "is expertly paced with its reveals, never falls apart (even when it descends into bloody chaos) and also features outstanding acting performances," he noted in his review. In case anyone was wondering, director Bong did not include any of his own films (which includes the recent "Mickey 17" as well as 2017's "Okja" and 2013's "Snowpiercer) in his top nine ranking. I love Denis Villeneuve. Here's why the ‘Dune' director making the next James Bond film is a bad idea
This is a bad idea, but more on that in a minute. Amazon MGM Studios and the new producers of the 007 franchise, Amy Pascal and David Heyman, announced Wednesday, June 25, that the ' Dune ' filmmaker will direct the next Bond picture, which would be the first without Daniel Craig in a quarter of a century. No actor has been cast to slip on the shoulder holster yet, although a report said Spider-Man Tom Holland, 'Euphoria' actor Jacob Elordi and 'Babygirl' star Harris Dickinson top Amazon's wish list. 'Some of my earliest movie-going memories are connected to 007,' Villeneuve said in a statement. 'I grew up watching James Bond films with my father, ever since 'Dr. No' with Sean Connery. I'm a die-hard Bond fan. To me, he's sacred territory. I intend to honor the tradition and open the path for many new missions to come.' On the surface, this is a no-brainer. Villeneuve is possibly the best big-budget genre filmmaker out there. He will turn his attention to Bond after completing 'Dune: Messiah,' the third chapter in the trilogy, which is due out in 2026. The first two, 'Dune' and 'Dune: Part Two,' were Oscar-nominated for best picture. He also directed a compelling sequel to a classic, ' Blade Runner: 2049 ' (2017), and his science fiction film ' Arrival ' (2016) has popped up on several ballots for the top 10 movies of the 21st century in a recent New York Times poll. Nevertheless, the choice has left me shaken, not stirred. Villeneuve is exactly who the Bond films don't need right now. Craig reinvigorated the franchise with a tough, serious approach in five films beginning with 'Casino Royale' (2006), a throwback to Connery after years of a more lighthearted approach by Pierce Brosnan and especially Roger Moore. By ' No Time to Die ' (2021), Craig's take on the character took personal torment to an almost Shakespearean level, and when he finally did find time to die, it was … quite the choice. 'No Time to Die,' directed by Oakland native Cary Joji Fukunaga, was an impressive, large-scale movie, no doubt, and it was exciting and compelling, a worthy coda to Craig's reign. But I walked out of the movie theater thinking, 'I remember when James Bond films were fun.' Double-oh-seven needs to be fun again. I'm not saying we should go back to 'Moonraker' (1979), the most unserious Bond film, an almost self-parody in which Moore is one step removed from Leslie Nielsen in the ' Naked Gun ' movies. But let's lighten up a bit. As terrific a filmmaker as he is, Villeneuve is the antithesis of 'lighten up.' His films are deadly serious. The guy who made the FBI drama ' Sicario ' can certainly direct an action sequence, but generating a laugh doesn't seem to be in his wheelhouse. Or, for that matter, a sex scene. When was the last sexually charged moment in a Villeneuve film? The Bond films, of course, are famous for their women, cringey in the 1960s but at least up to date in the Craig universe. Who should Pascal and Heyman have hired instead? Apparently, Christopher Nolan, who has long expressed interest in directing a Bond film, is occupied with his adaptation of Homer's ' The Odyssey,' the Oscar-winning filmmaker's first film since ' Oppenheimer,' the 2023 best picture winner. Villeneuve reportedly got the job over Edward Berger (' All Quiet on the Western Front,' ' Conclave '), Edgar Wright ('Shaun of the Dead,' ' Baby Driver '), Paul King (' Paddington,' ' Wonka ') and Jonathan Nolan, Christopher's brother who has worked mostly in television. My choice would have been David Leitch, the action specialist of ' Bullet Train ' and ' The Fall Guy.' Leitch rose up through the ranks as a stunt performer and coordinator, used to be an actor and co-directed the first ' John Wick ' movie. He has style and, when the script demands it, substance. The old Bonds of Connery and Moore were directed by genre directors, and two of the most successful reboots of the series, 'Goldeneye' (1995) and 'Casino Royale' (2006) were directed by action specialist Martin Campbell.
