SIBU (May 14): The new Sungai Sadit acute water system is providing a solution to the water supply issue in the area, said Utility and Telecommunication Minister Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi.
He said the fully operational project benefits not only Sungai Sadit residents, but also those in the Bawang Assan constituency and Sibu town.
'The implementation of Sungai Sadit acute system reduces dependency on Bukit Lima Water Treatment Plant and Salim Water Treatment Plant.
'We are taking the pressure away from Bukit Lima and Salim plants by putting up an acute system at Sungai Sadit with four million litres per day (MLD) production capacity.
'With the Sungai Sadit acute system, the plants at Bukit Lima and Salim can focus on servicing the town area,' he said when launching the system yesterday.
Julaihi said the RM5 million Rural Water Supply Department (JBALB) project commenced in September last year and was completed within six months.
Fully funded by the state government, the project involved the construction of a new water treatment plant and installation of new pipelines to existing distribution pipes.
'The implementation of the project is a part of the Sarawak Water Supply Master Plan and Water Supply Grid System. It is our long-term initiative to resolve and address water supply issues effectively and comprehensively,' he said.
Meanwhile, Julaihi said the ongoing upgrading of the Salim Water Treatment Plant to double its production capacity from 150MLD to 300MLD would ensure Sibu has water reserves.
'Together with Bukit Lima Water Treatment Plant, which produces 45MLD per day, we have a total of 195MLD per day at the moment but this is only enough for the use of Sibu residents and there is no reserve margin.
'That is why we need to upgrade Salim Water Treatment Plant and the Sarawak government has approved RM300 million for this purpose.
'I am confident that when we have 300MLD daily plus 45MLD from Bukit Lima plant, we will have sufficient water supply not just for Sibu but also for the outskirts and surrounding areas,' he added.
Among those present were JBALB director Awang Mohammad Fadillah Awang Redzuan, Ministry of Utility and Telecommunication permanent secretary Datu Jafri Lias, Sibu Water Board general manager Abdul Malik Abdullah, Sibu Resident Abang Mohamad Porkan Abang Budiman, Bawang Assan assemblyman Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh, and Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng.

Banking on youth for JS-SEZ's future

THE strong lure of the Singapore dollar is continuing to draw youths across the border for job opportunities. Iskandar Puteri City Council councillor Wong Foong Yee said many fresh graduates and young professionals still chose to work in Singapore due to the attractive currency exchange. To address the concern, Johor government implemented several strategies to encourage youth participation in the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ). 'Invest Johor offers grants to help young entrepreneurs start their businesses while Johor Talent Development Council is providing high skill training and offering premium salaries to retain talent. 'The state government is also working with local universities to align academic programmes with industry needs, especially in sectors expected to grow under the JS-SEZ such as artificial intelligence, data centres and green technology,' she said after attending a youth forum organised by JCI South Key in Kulai. She added that under the leadership of Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi, the state government was taking steps to strengthen the local ecosystem to support youth involvement in the JS-SEZ. She said state officials remained optimistic that long-term investments in youth development and support systems would gradually bring them back to the state. 'The future of the JS-SEZ depends on local talent. 'If we want sustainable growth, we need our youth to be part of it,' she said. JCI South Key president Tang Mei Ay said programmes such as the upcoming Green-Preneur Festival and Jom ESG Seminar were designed to support the state's 'Maju Johor' agenda. 'We also want the youth to benefit from exposure and opportunities that are available through the JS-SEZ.' Tang added that Johor youth must begin shifting their mindset and step out of their comfort zone to take part in international collaborations.

Powerwell accepts RM16.6mil switchboard orders for hyperscale data centre project

KUALA LUMPUR: Powerwell Holdings Bhd has accepted purchase orders (POs) worth RM16.63 million to supply switchboards and components for a hyperscale data centre project at Elmina Business Park, Selangor. In a filing with Bursa Malaysia today, the electrical products manufacturer said its wholly-owned subsidiary, Kejuruteraan Powerwell Sdn Bhd, received the POs from RYBE Engineering (M) Sdn Bhd, Protech Builders Sdn Bhd, and LFE Engineering Sdn Bhd. Powerwell said the POs, accepted between April and July this year, are expected to be fulfilled by the first quarter of 2026. "The POs are expected to contribute positively to Powerwell's consolidated earnings and net assets for the financial year ending March 31, 2026," it said. Powerwell added that it does not foresee any exceptional risks apart from normal operational risks associated with POs and will take steps to mitigate these risks. In a separate statement, Powerwell managing director Catherine Wong Yoke Yen said the orders reflected the group's technical capability in delivering data centre projects. "We are delighted to have secured these orders, which reflect our strong technical expertise and proven track record, having completed numerous data centre projects for multinational corporations," she said. Wong added that the company's outstanding order book as of end-March 2025 was about RM116 million, excluding the latest POs. -- BERNAMA

SMART project sees 582 telecommunications towers in Sarawak completed, 90.2 pct coverage reached

Julaihi said of the 582 completed towers, 481 are already operational. — Photo by Chimon Upon KUCHING (July 1): A total of 582 out of 618 telecommunications towers planned under the Sarawak Multimedia Authority Rural Transformation (SMART) project have been completed, with the remaining 36 still under construction as of May 31. Utility and Telecommunication Minister Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi said of the 582 completed towers, 481 are already operational. These include 420 towers offering both Sarawak Rural Broadband Network (MySRBN) broadband services and 4G mobile connectivity via Multi-Operator Core Network (MOCN) technology, 55 providing MySRBN-only access, and six serving as repeater sites. 'This marks a major milestone in our mission to enhance digital connectivity and bridge the digital divide across Sarawak. 'The current internet coverage by settlement stands at 90.2 per cent and is expected to reach 93.6 per cent by the end of 2025,' he said in a speech delivered by ministry deputy permanent secretary Syed Mohamad Fauzi Shahab for Digital Technology Nexus 2025 (DigitalNEXUS) organised by Universiti Sarawak Malaysia (Unimas) here today. Julaihi pointed out that Sarawak is among the earliest states to adopt 5G technology, with current Coverage of Populated Areas (Copa) reaching 63.8 per cent. 'The enhanced capabilities of 5G, such as higher speeds, lower latency, and increased capacity, are poised to revolutionise sectors including remote healthcare, industrial automation, transportation, smart cities, and entertainment,' he said. He added that the SMART initiative, one of the state's largest infrastructure projects, involves the rollout of 600 telecommunication towers and 18 repeater towers. Equipped with the MOCN system, it enables multiple telecommunications companies to share infrastructure, reducing costs and accelerating coverage expansion. To further enhance access, Julaihi said initiatives such as WiFi Saluran and Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) have been introduced to provide wireless internet to rural and suburban households. 'Complementing these efforts, the state's homegrown MySRBN initiative plays a vital role in delivering fixed wireless broadband to households, schools, and clinics in underserved areas, supporting e-learning, small businesses, telemedicine, and digital public services,' he added. The SMART initiative and expanding 5G coverage are part of Sarawak's broader digital transformation efforts aligned with the state's Post Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030. julaihi narawi lead Sarawak Multimedia Authority Rural Transformation
