Centurion power supply fully restored after gruelling repairs, says metro

The Citizen28-05-2025
Power supply has been restored to all parts of Centurion previously affected by the explosion at the Zwartkop Substation on May 20, according to Tshwane metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo.
The incident involved the explosion of Transformer 1A at the substation, which resulted in widespread outages across multiple areas, with some residents enduring more than a week without electricity.
Mashigo said the restoration comes after a gruelling eight-day repair process.

'The city's energy and electricity technicians worked around the clock through a strenuous cable installation and connection process,' he said.
He stated that once that process was complete, the team had to undertake the complex task of modifying the Cable End Box, which serves as the connection point between the cables and the main transformer.
'This task was complicated by the fact that the end box's original components were manufactured in 1972.
'Some of the parts had to be imported from other countries to complete the modification,' said Mashigo.
He encouraged any residents who may still be without power to report the issue through the city's normal complaint logging channels.
Mashigo expressed appreciation for the patience, co-operation and understanding shown by affected residents during the extended outage and apologised for the inconvenience caused.
Before the full restoration, the metro had already managed to restore electricity to some areas.
On May 21, MMC for Utility Services Frans Boshielo explained that the explosion had also tripped the Lyttelton Line 1 at Njala, affecting electricity supply to parts of the network served by the Wingate, Aries, and De Hoewes substations.
At the time, he stated that technicians were able to stabilise those lines and successfully restore supply to the affected zones.
However, other areas, including Zwartkop, Valhalla, Clubview, parts of Claudius, the military base in Thaba Tshwane, and the Zwartkop Airbase, remained without electricity.

Local retailers donate to Bombani shelter ahead of Mandela Day

As Mandela Day edges closer, and organisations ramp up efforts to give back to their communities, Southern Africa Partners (SnAPSA) and two local supermarkets spared a thought for the society's most vulnerable citizens who are affected by the alarming rate of abuse against women and children. On July 14, the community-based non-profit organisation SnAPSA went to Shoprite in Alexandra Plaza and Boxer at the Pan Africa Shopping Centre to collect items donated for the benefit of women and children at the Bombani Shelter—a haven for abused women and children. Shoprite donated preloved clothes, while Boxer donated food items to the value of R600. Read more: Bombani Shelter empower its women to celebrate Womens Month According to Shoprite's store manager, Thabiso Mashitwa, after SnAPSA dropped one of their donation boxes at their store, staff members demonstrated their willingness to donate some of their preloved clothes. She emphasised the importance of their participation, noting that it means a lot to both the store and the staff. 'There are people out there who do not have food or clothes. For the mere fact that we, as Shoprite, can ensure that at least a single child or woman gets clothes to wear, it means a lot. Those who donated, we know that at least one or two children will be able to get clothes,' she noted. She also lauded SnAPSA for the initiative and for involving them in it ahead of Mandela Day. 'I am also grateful to have a team behind me who donated their preloved clothes. I wish we could do more. All I can say [to SnAPSA] is please remember us again,' she said. Boxer's assistant store manager, Gift Maila, also expressed pride in their involvement in the initiative. 'We pride ourselves on giving back to the community. That is our motto; we strive to be the people's champion within the communities we serve. So, us doing this today, giving back, is what we do.' One of the mentors at SnAPSA, Zamashasha Hlengwa, expressed gratitude to the stores for their donations. Hlengwa noted that they will give the donated items to women and children at Bombani on July 17, ensuring that they have a fun day. Andries Tatane Cleaning Campaign comes to Atteridgeville

Ward 51 in Atteridgeville recently was the target of a clean up operation in an effort to address illegal dumping hotspots. Led by the MMC for Environmental Agriculture, Cllr Obakeng Ramabodu, and run under the banner of the Andries Tatane Campaign, it took place on July 11. Ramabodu launched the City of Tshwane's Andries Tatane Clean-Up Campaign earlier this month with a clean-up in the CBD, with the aim to educate residents about a clean city. The MMC says they want to work with private businesses across all seven regions to ensure the city and townships remain clean. 'There were some illegal dumping spots we've identified over the past five months, and we came here to check if they are being maintained or if the dumping is continuing. 'We are very happy that those illegal sites are being maintained for the time being, but what is important is that we invite businesses. 'We've dropped letters to different shops and stakeholders, and we are asking them to join us in this journey of cleaning the outside of their area. Let's have a clean city,' Ramabodu said. He also took aim at motorists for the part that they play in illegal dumping, encouraging them not to discard litter out of their vehicles while driving, as it only adds to the issue. 'I'm now convinced that our motorists, not all of them of course, are the ones who contribute to this littering problem. 'We want to call on motorists to at least try not to litter because most of the robots, intersections and traffic where cars stop are where we have problems. 'So let's all take responsibility for making sure we have a clean city,' Ramabodu said. Stakeholders also planted trees and cleaned the Atteridgeville cemetery in Ward 51 last month, as part of Environmental Awareness Month. Planned power outage to affect Blackheath, Risidale, and Northcliff

A scheduled power outage will impact parts of Johannesburg next week as City Power undertakes critical maintenance at the Roosevelt Park substation. The planned interruption is set for July 15, and will affect the suburbs of Blackheath, Risidale, and Northcliff. Electricity will be cut from 08:30 in the morning until 16:00 in the afternoon, during which technicians will carry out essential work on the network. According to City Power, this maintenance forms part of a broader effort to improve infrastructure reliability and ensure a more consistent supply of electricity across affected areas. While the interruption is scheduled for a specific window, officials have advised residents to treat all electrical points as live throughout the day. Power could be restored earlier than expected, depending on the progress of the work. Follow us on our Whatsapp channel, Facebook, X, Instagram, and TikTok for the latest updates and inspiration!
