Iraq approves Baghdad gold city project
Iraq's Ministry of Trade announced on Wednesday that the Economic Ministerial Council has approved a proposal to establish a Global Gold City in Baghdad, describing the move as a 'strategic step' to localize the gold and jewelry industry and boost domestic production.
Trade Minister Atheer Dawood Al-Ghurairi stated that the initiative marks a qualitative leap in developing national industries. The city will feature an integrated complex of specialized industrial units, advanced training centers for gold craftsmanship aligned with international standards, as well as a modern gold and jewelry market and exchange.
For his part, Riyadh Fakher Al-Hashemi, Director General of Foreign Economic Relations, said the project aims to support the private sector and expand its role in Iraq's economy. The city will be established within the Integrated Economic City in Baghdad and is intended to position the capital as a regional hub for gold manufacturing and trade.
He added that the ministry has already begun coordination with the National Investment Commission to finalize land allocation and issue investment licenses as preliminary steps toward launching the project.

Iraqi PM Inaugurates Construction of 1,000 MW Basra solar power plant
Shafaq News – Basra Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani inaugurated construction works on Thursday for the Basra Sun Power Plant, a major solar energy project with a planned capacity of 1,000 megawatts. The Prime Minister described the project as a key step toward strengthening Iraq's electricity generation system and supporting the government's broader transition to renewable energy. The Basra Sun Power Plant is being developed under a contract between Iraq's Ministry of Oil and the French energy giant TotalEnergies. Covering 9,000 dunams in the southern province of Basra, the project will feature two million solar panels distributed across four generating units, each capable of producing 250 megawatts. According to project details, the site will include 180 kilometers of 132 kV transmission lines, the construction of a new substation, and the rehabilitation of two existing substations operated by the Ministry of Oil. The first unit is expected to begin operating by the end of this year. The French company will be responsible for operating and maintaining the plant for 25 years. Officials noted that the facility will supply electricity to three secondary substations and contribute significantly to reducing air pollution, lowering dependence on fossil fuels, and cutting carbon emissions.

Dollar prices stabilize in Baghdad, rise in Erbil
Shafaq News - Baghdad/Erbil On Thursday, the exchange rates of the US Dollar against the Iraqi dinar remained stable in Baghdad and edged higher in Erbil market. According to a survey by Shafaq News, the dollar's rates set at 139,500 dinars for every 100 dollars, at the closure of the central Al-Kifah and Al-Harithiya stock exchanges in Baghdad. The selling and buying rates at currency exchange stores in Baghdad reached 140,500 IQD and 138,500 IQD per 100 USD, respectively. Erbil's selling price recorded 139,250 dinars for every 100 dollars, and the buying price was 139,000.
