‘Vital to address root cause of such violent acts': Why gender equality starts with boys

BHUBANESWAR: The recent cases of sexual harassment against women in Odisha have once again emphasised the urgency to effectively address women's safety. And as we often get to see that as a society our response is almost always policing the women by imposing curfews, dress codes and putting mobility restrictions on them under the guise of protection.
But this approach fails to address the root cause and instead, perpetuates gender inequality.
Gender-based violence remains a societal challenge, deeply rooted in patriarchal culture and by restricting women's freedom, we are sending a message that they are vulnerable and in need of control. Instead of empowering them and transforming men's attitude, we are restricting the girls, which will hardly bring any change.
These measures do not deter violence nor do they address the underlying attitudes among men that lead to abuse, harassment and discrimination. Moreover, suchpolicing reinforces victim-blaming and limits women's opportunities for independence, progress and equality.
Gender theorists through their research have found that most cases of violence against women, whether it is emotional abuse, sexual harassment or rape, involves a male perpetrator, highlighting the urgent need to sensitize men.
As a patriarchal society, men are often encouraged to suppress their emotions and families even scold boys if they cry.
Such attitudes fuel the cycles of violence and studies have shown that boys who experience or witness violence in childhood are at a greater risk of becoming perpetrators themselves.
We can take lessons from countries like Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden which rank high in Gender Development Index.
They have pioneered gender-equitable socialization, allowing boys to express emotions openly and share domestic roles equally. These societies have seen lower rates of gender-based violence and greater freedoms for women, demonstrating the impact of progressive socialization of men.
Parents and caregivers play a crucial role in nurturing boys with empathy and encouraging them to openly express their emotions, while fostering respect for others.
Schools also have an important responsibility to incorporate curriculum that emphasizes gender equality from an early age.

Kanpur schools get safety guidelines amid rainy season

Kanpur: Following the ongoing rainy season, district magistrate Jitendra Pratap Singh on Saturday issued guidelines to ensure safety of children in all schools across the district. Singh specifically instructed district inspector of schools Santosh Kumar Rai and district basic education officer Surjeet Kumar Singh that students must not, under any circumstances, be made to sit in dilapidated or unsafe classrooms. The DM further directed that, in cases where safe rooms are not available within the school, after obtaining the necessary approval from the competent authority, students should be temporarily transferred to a nearby school, and proper arrangements should be made for teaching and learning. A list detailing repairs required for the dilapidated rooms of the Parishad schools is to be promptly provided to the district construction coordinator via the block education officer. The managers and principals of non-government aided secondary schools have been instructed to conduct thorough inspections of their school buildings. Any unsafe rooms are to be identified, marked with a red 'X,' declared unusable, and barricaded. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Jennifer Garner's sweet photo on sprawling family farm gets fans talking Watch More Undo The district magistrate stated that, should any accident occur in a school due to negligence, the head of the institution concerned would be held personally responsible. Directives also include regular cleaning of school premises, toilets, and kitchens, ensuring that food preparation areas are free from insects and cobwebs, and providing hygienic food for children. Several parishad and private schools are reported to be in poor condition, with water seepage a common issue during rains. Yesterday, a ceiling fan reportedly fell on students during class, resulting in injuries to two students. Food items are to be stored in air-tight containers, and only ingredients certified by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) are permitted for use. Fire-fighting equipment is to be provided in schools, with teachers or staff trained to operate it. A first aid box with all necessary medicines must be available on the premises. In the event of any emergency, messages should be relayed to the appropriate officials and the nearest health centre. Students to connect with city's historical heritage through edu tours

Kanpur: The students of the Parishad schools in the district will soon be taken on educational tours to connect the new generation with the temples and historical places present in Kanpur. District magistrate Jitendra Pratap Singh on Friday visited two major historical sites protected by the Archeological Survey of India (ASI) in Bhitargaon block. First, he went to ancient Jagannath Temple located at Behta Buzurg village. The DM gathered information about the grandeur of the temple and its historical importance. The monsoon stone placed on the top of the sanctum sanctorum of the temple was also a centre of attraction for him. It is said that the prediction of rain is made based on the drops falling from this stone. The priest of the temple gave information about the history and tradition of the temple. Thereafter, he visited the ancient Gupta period temple situated in Bhitargaon town. The site is priceless heritage of the Gupta period whose architectural style, especially the terracotta sculpture and brick craft, still exists safely and impressive even after 1600 years. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like How Ken Koh revived ailing family business in S'pore to produce the 'Rolls-Royce' of soya sauce CNA Read More Undo The DM later commented that those temples not only reflect the historical depth of Kanpur district, but also prove that this region has been a rich cultural centre since ancient times and is not limited to only industrial identity. Bhitargaon area was rich in historical heritage and efforts would be intensified to bring it on the tourist map. He assured that every possible step would be taken at the administrative level to connect the heritage of this place with the public and to give a live introduction of it to the students through educational and excursion tours.
