'Can't Bear Torture': In Last Message, Tamil Nadu Woman Called In-laws 'Criminals' Before Suicide

'I can't live with him," said Rithanya, a 27-year-old woman from Tamil Nadu, in one of seven voice notes that she had sent to her father before death by suicide.
The woman ended her life by consuming poison o n June 28, alleging that she was subjected to severe physical and mental abuse from her husband and in-laws over dowry.
The case of harassment over dowry came to light after Rithanya's body was found in her car on a road in Tiruppur district. She tied the knot with Kavin Kumar (27) in April this year.
After Rithanya's death, Rithanya's father, RG Annadurai (53), filed a police complaint that led to the arrest of Kavin Kumar (27) and his mother Chithradevi (47).
In her messages, Rithanya said she does not want to live with his husband. 'He and his family are criminals. They planned to destroy my life," she said in one recording, adding that she cannot marry again, The News Minute reported.
Rithanya also accused her in-laws of mental torture and alleged she was physically assaulted by Kavin. 'I cannot bear the mental torture that they are giving me, nor can I be with him physically," she said.
'I'm not lying to you, Dad. This is the truth," she added.
Rithanya, a newlywed and daughter of Annadurai—a garment businessman and former political candidate —was married to 28-year-old Kavin Kumar on April 11, 2025, in a lavish ceremony. The wedding involved a hefty dowry that included 300 sovereigns of gold, a Volvo car worth Rs 70 lakh, and expenses amounting to Rs 2.5 crore. Additionally, there was an assurance of another 200 sovereigns of gold to be given later.
However, within just ten days of marriage, the situation turned grim. Rithanya began facing severe harassment from her husband Kavin Kumar, father-in-law Easwaramoorthy, and mother-in-law Chithradevi, all of whom pressured her over the promised remaining dowry. The abuse was not just verbal but included acts of cruelty, such as making her stand for hours over trivial matters.
On Saturday afternoon, after a visit to the Thalakkarai Lakshmi Narasimha Perumal Temple, Rithanya reportedly bought pesticide from Seyur. While on her way to the Mondipalayam Perumal Temple, she consumed the substance inside her car parked along the roadside. Passersby noticed her unconscious and informed the police. She was taken to the Avinashi Government Hospital, where doctors pronounced her dead on arrival.

Corrupt officials misplace records to evade law: Lokayukta special court
BENGALURU: Corrupt public servants of local bodies are deliberately misplacing original records of the scams they are involved in to escape the clutches of law, stated the special court for Lokayukta cases while rejecting the anticipatory bail petition filed by a former assistant executive engineer (AEE), Karnataka Housing Board (KHB), B Sector, Yelahanka Upanagar in the city. The accused No. 1, Syed Azgar, who was with the KHB Planning Division, has been booked by the Lokayukta police for his alleged involvement in the illegal sale of KHB sites and causing losses of crores of rupees to the exchequer. 'In the recent past, the officials from various local bodies like the KHB have been involved in such illegalities without bearing the minimum responsibilities of their position, existing rules, regulations and the law for their own reasons with the help of mediators, anti-social elements and other stakeholders. Most unfortunate are the acts of corrupt public servants in deliberately misplacing the original records after committing such illegalities (as in this case) so as to escape their criminal liabilities,' said Judge KM Radhakrishna. He said a similar fraud committed in respect of site No. 239, HIG in B Sector strengthens the involvement not only of this accused, but also of other officers from KHB in the scam. The accused, apprehending arrest by the Lokayukta police, contended before the special court that his higher officials, after having misplaced the original record, are attempting to shift the blame upon him. The Lokayukta police have registered a case based on a complaint filed by social worker KS Chandrashekar Azad against Azgar and two others. He alleged that the residential site No.271, MIG, A Sector at Yelahanka Upanagar, was allotted to Satish Harini, the third accused. Azgar, having joined hands with Govindaiah, the second accused, created fake documents with the intention of wrongful gain. Based on those documents, he sold and illegally executed the sale deed of the site on October 23, 2020, in favour of Govindaiah and caused Rs 10 lakh loss to KHB, Azad stated. Opposing bail, the prosecution contended that the material on record exposes the direct involvement of the petitioner along with others and demanded his custodial interrogation.

CCB seizes 123 kg of ganja; three arrested in Dakshina Kannada
Karnataka: A large cache of ganja weighing 123 kg was seized by the Mangaluru City Crime Branch in a major crackdown on narcotics smuggling, with three individuals arrested for allegedly transporting the contraband from Andhra Pradesh. Acting on a tip-off, CCB officials intercepted two cars near Mathadakere in Kantavar Cross, located in Beluvai village of Moodbidri taluk, Dakshina Kannada district, on Thursday. The contraband was reportedly being smuggled across state borders, they said. The arrested individuals have been identified as Masood M K (45), Mohammed Ashiq (24), and Subair (30), all residents of Kasaragod district in Kerala, officials added. In addition to the cannabis, officials also seized two vehicles—one registered in Karnataka and the other in Kerala—and five mobile phones. The total value of the seized goods is estimated at Rs 46.2 lakh. A case has been registered at the Moodbidri police station under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The operation is part of an ongoing effort to dismantle interstate narcotics networks. Investigations are underway to trace the origin and supply chain of the seized contraband, officials added.

Navi Mumbai murder accused apprehended after 13 years on the run
Last Updated: Thane, Aug 2 (PTI) The Navi Mumbai police have arrested a 36-year-old accused, who had been absconding for 13 years after killing a man over an unpaid loan, an official said on Saturday. Based on a tip-off, the Navi Mumbai police's crime branch nabbed the accused, Chhotu Markat Yadav, a native of Bihar, from Nagpur district on Thursday, the official said. According to the police, Chhotu Yadav allegedly stabbed Bhavanakhan Ugan Yadav (50) to death in the Rabale MIDC area in October 2012 and had been on the run since. A probe has revealed that the victim had borrowed Rs 25,000 from the accused and failed to repay him. Angered by this, the accused attacked him with a sharp weapon and killed him, the official said.
